    Transverse-Momentum and Pseudorapidity Distributions of Charged Hadrons in Pp Collisions at Root √s=0.9 and 2.36 Tev

    Measurements of inclusive charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions are presented for proton-proton collisions at root s = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central region, dN(ch)/d eta vertical bar(vertical bar eta vertical bar<0.5), are 3.48 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.13 (syst.) and 4.47 +/- 0.04 (stat.) +/- 0.16 (syst.), respectively. The results at 0.9 TeV are in agreement with previous measurements and confirm the expectation of near equal hadron production in p<(p)over bar> and pp collisions. The results at 2.36 TeV represent the highest-energy measurements at a particle collider to date.

    Evaluation of exact quantum query complexities by semidefinite programming

    One of the difficult tasks in quantum computation is inventing efficient exact quantum algorithms, which are the quantum algorithms that output the correct answer with certainty on any input. We improve and generalize the semidefinite programming (SDP) method of Montanaro et al. (Algorithmica 71:775-796, 2015) in order to evaluate exact quantum query complexities of partial functions. We present a more systematical approach to achieve the inspired result by Montanaro et al. for the function EXACT24, which is the Boolean function of 4 bits that output only when 2 of the input bits are equal to 1. The same approach also allows us to reduce the size of the ancilla space used by the algorithms that evaluate symmetric functions like EXACT36. We employ the generalized SDP to verify the complexities of the earliest and best known quantum algorithms in the literature, namely, Deutsch-Jozsa and Grover algorithms for a small number of input bits. We utilized the method to solve the weight decision problem of bit strings with lengths up to 10 bits and observed that the generalized SDP gives better exact quantum query complexities than the known methods. Finally, we test the method on some selected functions and demonstrate that they all exhibit quantum speedup.

    Comparative Study of Annealing and Gold Dopant Effect on Dc Sputtered Vanadium Oxide Films for Bolometer Applications

    Vanadium oxide (VOx) thin film has been widely used for IR detectors and it is one of the promising materials for THz detectors due to its high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) values. VOx films with proper TCR values have also high resistance and it restricts bolometer performance especially for uncooled bolometers. To overcome this problem, deposition at elevated temperatures or annealing approach has been accepted and used but gold co-deposition approach has been proposed recently. In this study, vanadium oxide films were fabricated on high resistivity silicon substrates by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering in different O2/Ar atmosphere at room temperature. We investigated influence of oxygen partial pressure during deposition process and fabricated VOx thin films with sufficient TCR values for bolometer applications. In order to decrease resistivity of the deposited films, post annealing and gold doping approaches were performed separately. Effect of both post annealing process and gold doping process on structural and electrical properties of VOx thin films deposited at room temperature were investigated and detailed comparison between these methods were presented. We obtained the best possible approach to obtain optimum conditions for the highly reproducible VOx thin films which have the best resistivity and suitable TCR value for bolometer applications.

    Metal Mesh Filters Based on Ti, Ito and Cu Thin Films for Terahertz Waves

    In this study, we have investigated the spectral performance of resonant terahertz (THz) bandpass filters which were produced from thin films with a metal-mesh shape. The aforementioned filters were fabricated from titanium, copper and indium tin oxide thin films on fused silica substrates by UV lithography with an array of cross-shaped apertures. Since the mesh period, cross-arm length and its width specify the spectral characteristics of the filters, we were able to reveal the performance of these filters experimentally using both a THz time domain spectrometer and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. A commercial electromagnetic simulation software, CST microwave studio, was used to verify the experimental data. The transmission of the filters are in the range 20–55 % at their relevant center frequencies. To our knowledge this study is the first to show that fabricated patterns based on ITO thin films can be used to filter THz radiation.

    Thin Film Like Terahertz Bolometric Detector on Bi2212 Single Crystal

    In this study, we developed a microbolometer chip fabricated from high temperature superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212) single crystals for the terahertz (THz) detection. For the manufacturing of the microbolometer chips, Bi2212 single crystals were transferred on substrate in the thin film like form and electron beam lithography, ion beam etching techniques were used. Resistance versus temperature behavior of the bolometer chips were performed by four probe technique in liquid nitrogen cryostat. Bi2212 microchips were integrated and characterized using in our custom-designed cryogenic bolometer system instead of expensive and massive cooling systems. The fabricated microchips significantly detected signals from the Stefan-Boltzmann lamp which includes a portion of THz radiation. The detected power and response time were studied for Bi2212 thin film like microbolometer chips. Our results demonstrated the feasibility of improved Bi2212 microchips could be used for bolometric detection for THz applications.

    Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pp Collisions at ?s = 0:9 and 7 Tev

    The charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are presented for pp collisions at √s = 0:9 and 7TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 μb-1and 2.96 pb-1, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The results are compared with leading and next-toleading order QCD and with an empirical scaling of measurements at different collision energies using the scaling variable xT - 2pT=ps over the pT range up to 136 GeV/c. Using a combination of xT scaling and direct interpolation at fixed pT, a reference transverse momentum spectrum at √s = 2:76TeV is constructed, which can be used for studying high-pT particle suppression in the dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at that centre-of-mass energy.     Search for Resonances in the Dilepton Mass Distribution in Pp Collisions at ?s = 7tev

    A search for narrow resonances at high mass in the dimuon and dielectron channels has been performed by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, using pp collision data recorded at √s = 7TeV. The event samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 40 pb-1in the dimuon channel and 35 pb-1in the dielectron channel. Heavy dilepton resonances are predicted in theoretical models with extra gauge bosons (Z') or as Kaluza- Klein graviton excitations (GKK) in the Randall-Sundrum model. Upper limits on the inclusive cross section of Z'(GKK) ! ℓ+ℓ-relative to Z → ℓ+ℓ-are presented. These limits exclude at 95% confidence level a Z' with standard-model-like couplings below 1140 GeV, the superstring-inspired Z' ψ below 887 GeV, and, for values of the coupling parameter k√MPl of 0.05 (0.1), Kaluza-Klein gravitons below 855 (1079) GeV. © SISSA 2011.

    Charged Particle Multiplicities in Pp Interactions at ?s = 0.9, 2.36, and 7tev

    Measurements of primary charged hadron multiplicity distributions are presented for non-single-diffractive events in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 0.9, 2.36, and 7TeV, in five pseudorapidity ranges from |η| < 0.5 to |η| < 2.4. The data were collected with the minimum-bias trigger of the CMS experiment during the LHC commissioning runs in 2009 and the 7TeV run in 2010. The multiplicity distribution at √s = 0.9 TeV is in agreement with previous measurements. At higher energies the increase of the mean multiplicity with √s is underestimated by most event generators. The average transverse momentum as a function of the multiplicity is also presented. The measurement of higher-order moments of the multiplicity distribution confirms the violation of Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling that has been observed at lower energies.

    Measurement of Bb¯ Angular Correlations Based on Secondary Vertex Reconstruction at ?s = 7 Tev

    A measurement of the angular correlations between beauty and anti-beauty hadrons (BB̄) produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the CERN LHC is presented, probing for the first time the region of small angular separation. The B hadrons are identified by the presence of displaced secondary vertices from their decays. The B hadron angular separation is reconstructed from the decay vertices and the primaryinteraction vertex. The differential BB̄ production cross section, measured from a data sample collected by CMS and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb -1, shows that a sizable fraction of the BB̄ pairs are produced with small opening angles. These studies provide a test of QCD and further insight into the dynamics of bb̄ production.

    Inclusive B-Hadron Production Cross Section With Muons in Pp Collisions at ?s = 7 Tev

    A measurement of the b-hadron production cross section in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV is presented. The dataset, corresponding to 85 nb-1, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC using a low-threshold single-muon trigger. Events are selected by the presence of a muon with transverse momentum pμ T > 6GeV with respect to the beam direction and pseudorapidity |ζμ| < 2.1. The transverse momentum of the muon with respect to the closest jet discriminates events containing b hadrons from background. The inclusive b-hadron production cross section is presented as a function of muon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The measured total cross section in the kinematic acceptance is σ(pp → b + X → μ + X′) = 1.32 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.30(syst) ± 0.15(lumi)μb.
