    Region-Specific Turning Points in Territorial Economic Resilience: A Business Cycle Approach To Turkey

    Almost all regional economic resilience studies measure resilience by referring to national time patterns of recessions. This study of region-specific patterns of resilience of 81 Turkish regions in the period 2009–20 and their underlying economic/demographic determinants in regions in Turkey shows that ignoring the different timings of regional and national economy recessions leads to misleading/biased results. The study shows first that provincial employment cycles are asynchronous. Second, the geographical pattern of resistance to the last 2018 economic crisis changes considerably when using province-specific rather than national turning points. Third, those provinces that are more open to trade, export- oriented, highly urbanised, and with a low level of human capital and entrepreneurial activities were more resistant to the recession. © 2023 Regional Studies Association.

    Lighting Quality and Work Performance Based on Glazing Types and Dynamic Led Lighting

    The combination of daylight characteristics and LED lighting quantities determines offices' visual environment. Lighting conditions can influence office workers' health and work performance. This study is an experimental one containing lighting measurements in two offices, subjective performance tests, and questionnaires to find out how work performance, lighting preferences, and satisfaction with lighting quality modify in terms of various glass types and dynamic LED lighting quantities. Glass types have strong impacts on contrast tests on paper and luminance which are corresponding to work performance. Regarding lighting quality, it strongly relates to the homogeneity of light, the impression of artificial light and the perception of objects' textures and color, contrast balance between paper and the surrounding. When the glass was modified in offices, we observed that participants preferred to change the CCT setting of LED by remote control, and in relation to that the eye-level illuminance and SPDs showed significant changes. So, the findings depicted the importance of the choice of glass types concerning LED lighting settings in terms of the above variables.

    An Evaluation of Measuring the Publicness Level of Interiors in Public Building Design: Visual Graph Analysis (vga) Approach

    This study examines the publicness level of the interior spaces of public buildings. As a method, VGA (visual graph analysis) is used for analyzing the early design phases of selected municipal service buildings. In this study, the authors utilized from VGA for quantifying the publicness level of the two selected architectural competitions of municipality buildings. The method allows us analyzing the floor plans of each project in obtaining an eventual assessment of permeability and accessibility which give an idea of the levels of publicness comparatively. Subsequently, representation parameters are compared under two main criteria: connectivity and integration. The aim of the study is to understand the level of publicness and efficiency of spatial settings for the users circulating in the public buildings, which have dissimilar plan schemes. This method would be used by the designers for early design stage and provide useful feedback for understanding the level of accessibility and permeability of the structures and adjust their schemes accordingly.

    Detection of Urban Change Using Remote Sensing and Gis: Izmir Case

    This study is an example of how land use changes could be detected via high resolution remotely sensed data. In order to perform "change detection" IKONOS satellite images, belonging to 2001 and 2004, have been used. An automated Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been created for detection of environment. Different image enhancement techniques and a fuzzy inference system have been combined in the GUI. The detection results are classified according to some basic levels such as 20-50% and 70%. Additionally, four different change detection algorithms have been applied which are pixel-based, object based, feature based. These algorithms have been examined according to change detection levels with different image enhancement techniques. At the end of the study, the results have been compared.

    Spatial Point Pattern Analysis of Lung Cancer in an Urban Area: Izmir Case

    In health area, in order to conduct a reliable analysis of the diseases that threat public health and develop control strategies. This is required to investigate firstly how the disease are geographically distributed, secondly regions where disease is observed more dense, and thirdly their geo-statistical aspects. The aim of the study is to prepare spatially distribution map of the lung cancer cases in Izmir, Turkey, and are distributed on Izmir map via GIS. Spatial statistics are performed and the relations of geographical factors and the cancer data are discussed. Smart maps with tabular data and displaying cancer cases on a spatially distribution maps have been produced as end products. ArcGIS and Spatial Analyst module are used for the study.

    Estimation Groundwater Total Recharge and Discharge Using Gis-Integrated Water Level Fluctuation Method: a Case Study From the Alasehir Alluvial Aquifer Western Anatolia, Turkey

    The estimation of groundwater recharge is an essential process for hydrogeological study. Realistic determination approach is crucial for assessing groundwater potential in an aquifer system and estimating of groundwater levels and/or changes in dry periods. Based on these matters, we employ a GIS-integrated groundwater level fluctuation method to determine the groundwater recharge for a hydrological period in the Alasehir alluvial aquifer (W. Anatolia). The method basically takes into account both increasing and decreasing of the groundwater levels due to the recharge and discharge mechanisms in the aquifer. In this study, 16 pumping and monitoring wells were drilled with a total depth of 1300 m, and water level data loggers were installed into the monitoring wells to determine the groundwater level changes. The spatial distribution of the monthly groundwater level change map was multiplied by the aquifer storage distribution map and then the accurate water volume is calculated by using the 3-D spatial analysis. According to our evaluation in the aquifer, positive volume change of the groundwater is 187 hm(3) in a year, which is considered as a recharge value of groundwater. It is concluded that the GIS-integrated water table fluctuation method gave rise to estimate the total recharge amount of the groundwater in the Alasehir aquifer. The total groundwater recharge indicates that total inflow in the aquifer from precipitation, leakage from surface water and irrigation waters. It can be stated that the recharge estimation of groundwater in a surficial aquifer, like the Alasehir aquifer, is fairly easy using the GIS-integrated water table fluctuation method.

    Investigation of Groundwater Potential and Groundwater Pollution Risk Using the Multi-Criteria Method: a Case Study (the Alasehir Sub-Basin, Western Turkey)

    Determination of the groundwater potential (GWP) and groundwater pollution risk (GWPR) areas is a very important tool in the semi-arid regions in the world. Like many countries in the world, most of the major settlements in the cities of Turkey are located in permeable alluvial plains. Therefore, significant groundwater pollution is encountered in an alluvial plain containing settlements and industrial sites. This study focuses on the determination of the GWP and GWPR areas in the Alasehir sub-basin, which is one of the economically important districts of the Aegean region, located in the Gediz River basin in western Turkey. In this study, the GWP and the GWPR areas were identified and a GWP index map was generated. The GWP areas in the study basin were determined using different proxies as a multi-criteria method based on geographic information system (GIS) integrated with remote sensing (RS). The result of the study indicates that the most GWP locations in the basin are seen in the west and southeast of the study region. Based on these results, it is understood that the significant GWP and GWPR areas are near the big settlement districts such as Alasehir and Salihli. In particular, the 115-ha organized industrial zone located in the Salihli district is an important factor of the potential for consuming and contaminating water resources. This study method is so important for the selection of both city and industrial areas as well as for regional environmental planning in terms of the GWPR management.

    Regional Inequality and International Trade in Turkey: a Dynamic Spatial Panel Approach

    Aim of the present article1 is to investigate the impact of trade liberalization on the evolution of regional income inequalities in Turkey between 2004-2011. Despite the large body of literature on this subject, there exists several directions which needs to be further explored. i. so far in the literature, the concept of trade openness is too broadly defined. However, it is not only ‘trade’ per se that can affect the regional economies but the composition of trade is also of great importance (Rodriquez-Pose and Gill, 2006). Indeed, it can be partitioned into two components, such as exports and imports. We analyze separately the impact of each component on the evolution of regional inequalities. ii. in most of the empirical studies dealing with this issue, neighboring regions are assumed to have no spatial economic interconnection between each other. We, therefore, incorporate spatial spillovers of trade and growth into our analysis. Our results are summarized in two groups: First, regional inequalities in Turkey are quite sizable but tend to decline over the period of analyses. Second, initially poorer regions that experience an export-based liberalization tend to grow faster than richer ones.     Confronted and Disappointed? Struggle of Turkish Planners Against Authoritarian State-Regulated Urban Development

    This chapter highlights the confrontations and disappointments, turning the spotlight on those who continue to struggle against authoritarian state-regulated urban development. Lacking the instruments to fight authoritarian state-regulated neoliberalism, young planners are becoming disillusioned with their profession. The deepening effects of neoliberalisation have blurred the boundaries between public and private interests, prioritising the role of flexible, short-term, collaborative, and strategic approaches to planning, rather than comprehensive, long-term, and holistic visions. The findings of research provide sufficient data for an understanding and interpretation of the changing positions and roles, strategies and actions, behaviours and attitudes of planners in the face of authoritarian state-regulated neoliberal urban development in Turkey. Deniz Kimyon, 29 years old, is a graduate of the City and Regional Planning Department of Middle East Technical University. The results of the questionnaire also reveal that the views of planners on their profession change over the years.

    Transformation in a Housing-Design Story: Reading the Spatial Typologies of Apartment Projects in Hatay-Izmir

    The politics of central government or incentives determine new design-systems of housing plots as well as housing units. Especially after the enactment of the law of urban regeneration for risky areas, regeneration of areas under disaster risk, there has been an acceleration in knocking down old buildings and constructing new ones in inner cities. Thus, this paper focuses on the changes in housing typologies in Hatay-Izmir, in terms of space syntax parameters through the time period 1960-2000, and interprets the final plan-solutions within the perspective of urban regeneration. By accelerating implementations of the urban transformation projects in Hatay region, alternative plan-typologies coming from the past have undergone the so-called “re-design and transformation” process; however, they have actually been substituted by the “never-changing” plan-templates of the apartment typology. We will examine these changes in plan typologies and spatial organisations of the mentioned apartment-projects on the same plots by utilizing the method of space syntax and visibility analysis (VGA). Transformations in spatial configuration in two periods are interpreted through their relationships to shifts in meaning of privacy and daily life represented by degree of permeability and connectivity of housing-unit-plans based on spatial analysis. © 2018, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture.
