    Detection of Urban Change Using Remote Sensing and Gis: Izmir Case

    This study is an example of how land use changes could be detected via high resolution remotely sensed data. In order to perform "change detection" IKONOS satellite images, belonging to 2001 and 2004, have been used. An automated Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been created for detection of environment. Different image enhancement techniques and a fuzzy inference system have been combined in the GUI. The detection results are classified according to some basic levels such as 20-50% and 70%. Additionally, four different change detection algorithms have been applied which are pixel-based, object based, feature based. These algorithms have been examined according to change detection levels with different image enhancement techniques. At the end of the study, the results have been compared.

    Spatial Point Pattern Analysis of Lung Cancer in an Urban Area: Izmir Case

    In health area, in order to conduct a reliable analysis of the diseases that threat public health and develop control strategies. This is required to investigate firstly how the disease are geographically distributed, secondly regions where disease is observed more dense, and thirdly their geo-statistical aspects. The aim of the study is to prepare spatially distribution map of the lung cancer cases in Izmir, Turkey, and are distributed on Izmir map via GIS. Spatial statistics are performed and the relations of geographical factors and the cancer data are discussed. Smart maps with tabular data and displaying cancer cases on a spatially distribution maps have been produced as end products. ArcGIS and Spatial Analyst module are used for the study.

    Detection of Flood Hazard in Urban Areas Using Gis: Izmir Case

    The aim of this study is to predict the potential flood-hazard areas using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-Digital Elevation Model (SRTM-DEM). The study area is the province of Izmir. SRTM-DEM of the Izmir Province has 90 m of grid size resolution; 45 m of horizontal accuracy; and 15 m of vertical accuracy. Within this study, obtaining spatial information on flood hazard by using Izmir digital terrain models and by 3D analysis that will help to achieve the regional flood hazard management scheme is aimed. Flood-hazard areas have been identified by the use of digital elevation model covering the study area. The main rivers in the study area are Gediz, Kucuk Menderes and Bakircay that creates the coastal flood plains. In order to estimate the spatial distribution of flood-hazard areas in Izmir, five factors are used: flow accumulation, land use, slope, rainfall intensity, and elevation. The classic hydrological modelling approach was applied to determine the rainfall intensity; rainfall intensity of study region is created with the average amount of total rainfall intensity of fifteen stations in the two basins per minute using the interpolation method (spline interpolation). By the digitizing rivers, topography, flow direction and flow accumulation, as well as the flood detention areas are determined. These factors were combined with the weighted overlay method to determine categorized flood-hazard areas. As a result, possible flood-hazard areas have been determined in the case of Izmir Province.     Evaluation of an Integrated Gis-Based Crime Analysis & 3d Modelling for Izmir-Konak Municipality

    GIS integrated 3D modelling is crucial for the city planning and design processes because urban modelling is a tool used in virtual environments, and provides convenience to work. Although, the creation and display of 3D city models for large regions is difficult it is vital for planning and designing safer cities, as well as public places. Today, crime is a significant problem in Turkey. When it was compared by years of crime rates, population growth and urbanization rate, an increasing more than in parallel has been observed. This paper aims to discuss GIS integrated 3D modelling affects in urban planning and design, explaining Turkish planning processes with GIS and 3D modelling. To do that, it presents a case study for Izmir Konak Municipality about GIS integrated crime analysis and 3D models of the crime scenes. Izmir crime records has been obtained from Izmir Police Department belonging to 2003-2004 and 2005 (D.Deniz, 2007) are used for districts’ crime map. In the light of these data, the highest rate crime district, Konak, is analyzed between 2001 and 2005 data.
