Article Citation - Scopus: 1Oxidizer Gases Effects on the Diameter-Controlled Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes(MIM Research Group, 2021) İnce Yardımcı, Atike; Öğütlü, Ahmet Sabri; Öğütlü, DenizIn this study, the influence of the oxidizers on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes by C2H4 decomposition over Fe catalyst has been investigated. CO2, O2, and H2O have been used as oxidizers, and to control catalyst particle formation and their sizes in the pretreatment stage. The same oxidizers have also been used in the growth stage to maintain the catalyst particle size, remove amorphous carbon formation to keep catalyst particle active. The results of scanning electron microscopy indicated that the average diameters of nanotubes decreased from 13.4±1.2 nm to 6.2±0.5 nm and extremely dense nanotubes were obtained when we added a small amount of CO2. Adding O2 extremely decreased the areal carbon nanotube density while widens the diameter distribution. H2O addition resulted in larger average diameters and made the growth strongly pretreatment dependent. Within the parameters tried for catalyst pretreatment and CNT growth processes, CO2 seemed the best choice for a weak oxidizing assistant. The strong dependency of the average diameter on pretreatment conditions indicated that pretreatment is a very important step in deciding the final diameters and their distribution.Article Citation - WoS: 65Citation - Scopus: 77Air and Seawater Pollution and Air–sea Gas Exchange of Persistent Toxic Substances in the Aegean Sea: Spatial Trends of Pahs, Pcbs, Ocps and Pbdes(Springer Verlag, 2015) Lammel, Gerhard; Audy, Ondrej; Besis, Athanasios; Efstathiou, Christos; Eleftheriadis, Kostas; Kohoutek, Jiri; Kukucka, Petr; Mulder, Marie D.; Pribylova, Petra; Prokes, Roman; Rusina, Tatsiana P.; Samara, Constantini; Sofuoğlu, Aysun; Sofuoğlu, Sait Cemil; Taşdemir, Yücel; Vassilatou, Vassiliki; Voutsa, Dimitra; Vrana, BranislavNear-ground air (26 substances) and surface seawater (55 substances) concentrations of persistent toxic substances (PTS) were determined in July 2012 in a coordinated and coherent way around the Aegean Sea based on passive air (10 sites in 5 areas) and water (4 sites in 2 areas) sampling. The direction of air–sea exchange was determined for 18 PTS. Identical samplers were deployed at all sites and were analysed at one laboratory. hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) as well as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its degradation products are evenly distributed in the air of the whole region. Air concentrations of p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE) and o,p′-DDT and seawater concentrations of p,p′-DDE and p,p′-DDD were elevated in Thermaikos Gulf, northwestern Aegean Sea. The polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener pattern in air is identical throughout the region, while polybrominated diphenylether (PBDE)patterns are obviously dissimilar between Greece and Turkey. Various pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), PCBs, DDE, and penta- and hexachlorobenzene are found close to phase equilibrium or net-volatilisational (upward flux), similarly at a remote site (on Crete) and in the more polluted Thermaikos Gulf. The results suggest that effective passive air sampling volumes may not be representative across sites when PAHs significantly partitioning to the particulate phase are included.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 10In-Situ Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and Structural Study of Hfo2 Thin Films Deposited by Radio Frequency Magnetron Sputtering(American Institute of Physics, 2014) Cantaş, Ayten; Özyüzer, Gülnur Aygün; Basa, Deepak KumarWe have investigated the reduction of unwanted interfacial SiO2 layer at HfO2/Si interface brought about by the deposition of thin Hf metal buffer layer on Si substrate prior to the deposition of HfO2 thin films for possible direct contact between HfO2 thin film and Si substrate, necessary for the future generation devices based on high-κ HfO2 gate dielectrics. Reactive rf magnetron sputtering system along with the attached in-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) was used to predeposit Hf metal buffer layer as well as to grow HfO2 thin films and also to undertake the in-situ characterization of the high-κ HfO2 thin films deposited on n-type 〈100〉 crystalline silicon substrate. The formation of the unwanted interfacial SiO2 layer and its reduction due to the predeposited Hf metal buffer layer as well as the depth profiling and also structure of HfO2 thin films were investigated by in-situ SE, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction. The study demonstrates that the predeposited Hf metal buffer layer has played a crucial role in eliminating the formation of unwanted interfacial layer and that the deposited high-κ HfO2 thin films are crystalline although they were deposited at room temperature.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 18Influence of Stratification and Shoreline Erosion on Reservoir Sedimentation Patterns(American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2007) Elçi, Şebnem; Work, Paul A.; Hayter, Earl J.Sedimentation in the main pool of a deep (maximum depth: 50 m), 227 km2 hydropower reservoir was modeled using a three-dimensional numerical model of hydrodynamics and sedimentation for different wind, inflow, and outflow conditions. Short-term velocity measurements made in the reservoir were used to validate some aspects of the hydrodynamic model. The effects of thermal stratification on sedimentation patterns were investigated, since the reservoir is periodically strongly stratified. Stratification alters velocity profiles and thus affects sedimentation in the reservoir. Sedimentation of reservoirs is often modeled considering only the deposition of sediments delivered by tributaries. However, the sediments eroding from the shorelines can contribute significantly to sedimentation if the shorelines of the reservoir erode at sufficiently high rates or if sediment delivery via tributary inflow is small. Thus, shoreline erosion rates for a reservoir were quantified based on measured fetch, parameterized beach profile shape, and measured wind vectors, and the eroded sediments treated as a source within the sedimentation modeling scheme. The methodology for the prediction of shoreline erosion was calibrated and validated using digital aerial photos of the reservoir taken in different years and indicated approximately 1m/year of shoreline retreat for several locations. This study revealed likely zones of sediment deposition in a thermally stratified reservoir and presented a methodology for integration of shoreline erosion into sedimentation studies that can be used in any reservoir.Article Citation - WoS: 2Dimensions of Polystyrene Particles Deposited on Mica From Dilute Cyclohexane Solution at Different Temperatures(American Chemical Society, 2002) Demir, Mustafa Muammer; Erman, BurakUsing atomic force microscopy, the height, diameter, and volume of polystyrene particles deposited on mica from dilute cyclohexane solution at different temperatures are determined. Dimensions exhibit a strong temperature dependence. The heights of the deposited particles are only a few atomic diameters, the major dimension being parallel to the mica surface. The number of single polystyrene molecules in a deposited particle cannot be determined directly by atomic force microscopy. However, the maximum number of molecules that may be present in a particle may be estimated. Below 35 °C, the particles possibly consist of single collapsed molecules. This number increases with temperature and becomes as large as about 30 molecules per particle at 80 °C. The volume occupied by a single chain in solvent is calculated as a function of temperature and compared with observed volumes of dry particles on mica. A linear relationship is observed between single chain volumes in solvent and corresponding particle volumes on mica. On the average, the volume of a single chain in solution is 10 times the volume of a dry particle at the corresponding temperature. Fluctuations of chain volumes that are dominant in solution are also present in the volumes of particles deposited and dried on mica.
