Izmir Institute of TechnologyGel polymer electrolyte (GPE) comprising a low viscosity ionic liquid, that is, 1-propyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (PMI-TFSI, viscosity 38 cP at 20°C) and a polymer, that is, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) have been prepared using solution cast technique and characterized by impedance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Blending PMI-TFSI with PVA matrix hindered the crystallinity of polymer matrix and presented remarkable enhancement in electrical conductivity with a conductivity maxima at 250 wt% PMI-TFSI. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study aimed the characterization of the films casted from the aqueous mixtures of the pH induced complexes between silk fibroin (SF) and hyaluronic acid (HA). The insoluble and transparent films were subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses to show the morphological changes. Thermal analysis of complex films was determined by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The changes in the crystalline state were monitored by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was shown that the complexation between HA and SF was dominantly induced by pH. In this study, the waste samples, which contain tartaric acid, from the wastes of wine and grape juice industries were characterized by using TG, DSC, FTIR and XRD techniques. HPLC was used to determine tartaric acid content of samples. The decomposition temperatures of waste samples were found to be relatively higher compared with that of pure tartaric acid. Izmir Institute of TechnologyDetection of penicillin G, ampicillin and tetracycline in ultra high temperature whole milk was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal parameters including the heat of fusion, the evaporation temperature, the heat of evaporation and the melting temperature obtained from DSC analysis were used to characterise thermal behaviour of antibiotic free milk samples and milk samples fortified with Penicillin G, Ampicillin and Tetracycline. DSC curves of these antibiotics at selected concentrations (0, 2, 4, 8 ppb for Penicillin G and Ampicillin; 0, 100, 250, 500 ppb for Tetracycline) show big endothermic peaks in the temperature range of -30 °C and 200 °C. It was concluded that the antibiotic concentration had a significant effect on the thermal parameters at a 95% confidence level. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn this study, the production of ZnSt2 using sodium stearate and zinc sulfate in a precipitation process, and stearic acid and zinc oxide in a fusion process, was investigated with regard to product purity. In the fusion process, an increase in mixing rate decreased the induction time occurring at the beginning of the reaction. While the melting point of the zinc stearate prepared by the precipitation process was found to be about 122°C by optical microscopy, it was slightly lower than 122°C for zinc stearate produced by the fusion process. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated onset of melting at 120°C and 118°C for samples prepared by precipitation and fusion processes, respectively. Characteristic peaks of ZnSt2 were present in XRD patterns of the products obtained by both processes. From SEM micrographs, it was seen that zinc stearate obtained by both processes had lamellar structure.
