Enrichment of Turkish Question Answering Systems Using Knowledge Graphs
(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2024) Tekir, Selma; Soygazi, Fatih; Tekir, Selma; 03.04. Department of Computer Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Recent capabilities of large language models (LLMs) have transformed many tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP), including question answering. The state-of-the-art systems do an excellent job of responding in a relevant, persuasive way but cannot guarantee factuality. Knowledge graphs, representing facts as triplets, can be valuable for avoiding errors and inconsistencies with real-world facts. This work introduces a knowledge graph-based approach to Turkish question answering. The proposed approach aims to develop a methodology capable of drawing inferences from a knowledge graph to answer complex multihop questions. We construct the Beyazperde Movie Knowledge Graph (BPMovieKG) and the Turkish Movie Question Answering dataset (TRMQA) to answer questions in the movie domain. We evaluate our proposed question answering pipeline against a baseline study. Furthermore, we compare it with a question answering system built upon GPT-3.5 Turbo to answer the 1-hop questions from TRMQA. The experimental results confirm that link prediction on a knowledge graph is quite effective in answering questions that require reasoning paths. Finally, we provide insights into the pros and cons of the provided solution through a qualitative study.

Estrus Detection and Dairy Cow Identification With Cascade Deep Learning for Augmented Reality-Ready Livestock Farming
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023) Arıkan, İ.; Ayav, Tolga; Ayav, T.; Seçkin, A.Ç.; Soygazi, F.; 03.04. Department of Computer Engineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Accurate prediction of the estrus period is crucial for optimizing insemination efficiency and reducing costs in animal husbandry, a vital sector for global food production. Precise estrus period determination is essential to avoid economic losses, such as milk production reductions, delayed calf births, and disqualification from government support. The proposed method integrates estrus period detection with cow identification using augmented reality (AR). It initiates deep learning-based mounting detection, followed by identifying the mounting region of interest (ROI) using YOLOv5. The ROI is then cropped with padding, and cow ID detection is executed using YOLOv5 on the cropped ROI. The system subsequently records the identified cow IDs. The proposed system accurately detects mounting behavior with 99% accuracy, identifies the ROI where mounting occurs with 98% accuracy, and detects the mounting couple with 94% accuracy. The high success of all operations with the proposed system demonstrates its potential contribution to AR and artificial intelligence applications in livestock farming. © 2023 by the authors.

A Wearable Device Integrated With Deep Learning-Based Algorithms for the Analysis of Breath Patterns
(Wiley, 2023) Tarım, Ergün Alperay; Tekin, Hüseyin Cumhur; Erimez, Büşra; Değirmenci, Mehmet; Tekin, H. Cumhur; 03.01. Department of Bioengineering; 03. Faculty of Engineering; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Sleep problems are serious issues that make life difficult for all people, including sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, which causes breathlessness for more than 10 s, is linked to severe health problems due to the serious damage it can induce. To mitigate the risk of these disorders, the monitoring of patients has become increasingly challenging. Wearable technologies offer an effective healthcare solution for remote patient monitoring and diagnosis. A novel wearable system based on Arduino technology is introduced, specifically designed to monitor the breath patterns of patients. The analysis of breath data from patients holds great importance for the diagnosis and continuous monitoring of sleep apnea. To address this need, an advanced image processing system based on deep learning techniques is presented. This system automatically detects respiratory patterns, including inhalation, exhalation, and breathlessness. The device has an average of 97.6% sensitivity, 79.7% specificity, and 96% accuracy in identifying breath patterns. The designed device can offer patients and healthcare institutions a simple, inexpensive, noninvasive, and ergonomic system for the analysis of breath patterns that can be further extended for sleep apnea diagnosis.
