The consumption of plastics has increased exponentially due to their low cost, chemical resistance, lightness, durability and ability to combine with other materials. However, plastic materials represent high tonnage in urban wastes, and it is known that these plastics discarded at the end of their useful life by filling the landfill sites. Electrospinning is a well-established and versatile technique for the fabrication of submicron fibers. In addition, it is a promising approach for the recycling of waste polymers without using complex methodologies. In this chapter, utilization of electrospinning approach for the recycling of daily wastes will be discussed. The literature about the daily wastes of both synthetic materials and natural/agricultural materials will be analyzed, and the applications of these materials will be given in detail. © 2019 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston. Their structures were determined by spectral data analysis including 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS. Neo-clerodane diterpenoids were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. None of them showed significant antimicrobial activity against various bacterial and fungal strains (up to 20 µg/mL). The 1,2-diaryl/alkyl-amino-1,2-diboracyclopentanes 2, 3, and 4 were obtained in good yield after the reaction of 1,2-dichloro-1,2-diboracyclopentane 1 with ArNHLi and Me3Si-NR2. The structures of these new derivatives were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The molecular structures of 2b, 2c, 2e, 4, and 5f were also determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Because of its high case fatality rate, listeriosis ranks among the most frequent causes of death due to food-borne illness. L. monocytogenes and C. jejuni has been shown to adapt to different environmental stress factors, including disinfectants. Salmonella enteritidis, C. jejuni and L. monocytogenes may also form a biolfim which helps to survive in the environment. Capsaicin is a hydrophobic volatile compound exhibiting antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms. Capsaicin in the form of an emulsion-based carrier system could be a good alternative to enhance bioavailability and simultaneously to increase the shelf-life of food. In this study, capsaicin emulsions were formulated using three different surfactants (Tween 80, commercial soy lecithin, and sucrose monopalmitate/SMP). Effects of aqueous phase composition, pH, and heating the pre-homogenized dispersion were investigated. For characterization, NMR relaxometry, color, turbidity, and antioxidant activity experiments were conducted. Antimicrobial efficacies of the emulsions were also evaluated against Escherichia coli andStaphylococcus aureus. Mean particle sizes of emulsions with surfactants Tween 80, lecithin, and SMP were found to be 68.30, 582.63, and 50.10 nm, respectively. Lecithin-containing emulsions showed the highest antimicrobial activity against S. aureus with 4.60 log reduction, whereas the same effect was observed in Tween 80-containing emulsions against E. coli with 3.86 log reduction. Emulsions prepared with SMP showed the highest antioxidant activity with 0.482 mg DPPH/L emulsion. Cytotoxic activities of novel complexes were investigated against lung cancer cells (A549) and BEAS-2B. Three of the examined compounds (1, 4 and 5) showed high cytotoxic activity against A549. While the IC50 of the cisplatin was 2.56 μg/mL for A549 cells at 72 h, the IC50 values of compounds 1, 4 and 5 were 1.97, 1.87 and 1.9 μg/mL, respectively. IC50 values of these compounds for BEAS-2B cells were higher than the IC50 values for A549. While the IC50 values for BEAS-2B cells were 59.8, 24.5 and 32.67 μg/mL, respectively, the IC50 of the cisplatin was determined as 2.53 μg/mL in the present work. Three of the compounds have also high antimicrobial activity against all the microorganisms used.Article Citation - WoS: 180Citation - Scopus: 208Incorporating Phenolic Compounds Opens a New Perspective To Use Zein Films as Flexible Bioactive Packaging Materials(Elsevier Ltd., 2011) Arcan, İskender; Yemenicioğlu, AhmetTo eliminate their classical brittleness and flexibility problems zein films were plasticized by incorporation of different phenolic acids (gallic acid (GA), p-hydroxy benzoic acid (HBA) or ferulic acids (FA)) or flavonoids (catechin (CAT), flavone (FLA) or quercetin (QU)). The use of GA, CAT, FA and HBA at 3mg/cm2 eliminated the brittleness of films and gave highly flexible films showing elongations between 135% and 189%, while FLA and QU caused no considerable effect on film elongation. The films containing FA and HBA showed extreme swelling and lost their structural integrity when hydrated in distilled water. In contrast, CAT and GA containing films maintained their integrity following hydration. Most of the GA (up to 93%) and a considerable portion of CAT (up to 60%) in the films existed in soluble form. Therefore, the films showed antioxidant and/or antimicrobial activity. The TEACs of soluble phenolic compounds in 3mg/cm2 CAT and GA containing films were 21.0 and 86.2μmoltrolox/cm2, respectively. The GA containing films showed antimicrobial activity on Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter jejuni, while CAT showed no antimicrobial activity on these bacteria at the studied concentration. The zein and zein-wax composite films containing GA between 2.5 and 10 mg/cm 2 were effective on different C. jejuni strains in a concentration-dependent manner. Zein and zein-wax composite films showed different release profiles in distilled water but quite similar release profiles at solid agar medium. Depending on incorporated GA concentration, 60-80% of GA released from the films, while the remaining GA was bound or trapped by film matrix. The GA at 2.5 and 5 mg/cm 2 caused a considerable increase in elongation (57-280%) of all zein films and eliminated their classical flexibility problems. The zein-wax composite films were less flexible than zein films, but the films showed similar tensile strengths and Young's modulus. Scanning electron microscopy indicated different morphologies of zein and zein-wax composite films. This study clearly showed the good potential of zein and GA to develop flexible antimicrobial films against C. jejuni.Article Citation - WoS: 72Citation - Scopus: 87Adsorption of Olive Leaf (olea Europaea L.) Antioxidants on Silk Fibroin(American Chemical Society, 2007) Bayçın, Deniz; Altıok, Evren; Ülkü, Semra; Bayraktar, OğuzThe adsorption isotherms of oleuropein and rutin were evaluated at different temperatures, pH values, and solid/liquid ratios. The experimental data of adsorption isotherms were well fitted to a Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined as 108 mg of oleuropein/g of silk fibroin and 21 mg of rutin/g of silk fibroin. After adsorption of oleuropein and rutin, the antioxidant capacity of silk fibroin increased from 1.93 to 3.61 mmol of TEAC/g. Silk fibroin also gained antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae after adsorption of olive leaf antioxidants. In a desorption process, 81% of rutin and 85% of oleuropein were removed from the adsorbent surface in 70% aqueous ethanol solution. Consequently, silk fibroin was found to be a promising biomaterial for the production of functional food or dietary supplements and for the purification of oleuropein and rutin from olive leaf extracts.
