    Effect of Aromatic Sams Molecules on Graphene/Silicon Schottky Diode Performance

    Au/n-Si/Graphene/Au Schottky diodes were fabricated by transferring atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposited (APCVD) graphene on silicon substrates. Graphene/n-Si interface properties were improved by using 5-[(3-methylphenyl)(phenyl) amino]isophthalic acid (MePIFA) and 5-(diphenyl)amino]isophthalic acid (DPIFA) aromatic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) molecules. The surface morphologies of modified and non-modified films were investigated by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The surface potential characteristics were obtained by Kelvin-probe force microscopy and found as 0.158 V, 0.188 V and 0,383 V as a result of SAMs modification. The ideality factors of n-Si/Graphene, n-Si/MePIFA/Graphene and n-Si/DPIFA/Graphene diodes were found as 1.07, 1.13 and 1.15, respectively. Due to the chain length of aromatic organic MePIFA and DPIFA molecules, also the barrier height φB values of the devices were decreased. While the barrier height of n-Si/Graphene diode was obtained as 0.931 eV, n-Si/MePIFA/Graphene and n-Si/DPIFA/Graphene diodes have barrier height of 0.820 and 0.720 eV, respectively.

    An Experimental Study on Performance and Emission Characteristics of a Hydrogen Fuelled Spark Ignition Engine

    In the present paper, the performance and emission characteristics of a conventional four cylinder spark ignition (SI) engine operated on hydrogen and gasoline are investigated experimentally. The compressed hydrogen at 20 MPa has been introduced to the engine adopted to operate on gaseous hydrogen by external mixing. Two regulators have been used to drop the pressure first to 300 kPa, then to atmospheric pressure. The variations of torque, power, brake thermal efficiency, brake mean effective pressure, exhaust gas temperature, and emissions of NOx, CO, CO2, HC, and O2 versus engine speed are compared for a carbureted SI engine operating on gasoline and hydrogen. Energy analysis also has studied for comparison purpose. The test results have been demonstrated that power loss occurs at low speed hydrogen operation whereas high speed characteristics compete well with gasoline operation. Fast burning characteristics of hydrogen have permitted high speed engine operation. Less heat loss has occurred for hydrogen than gasoline. NOx emission of hydrogen fuelled engine is about 10 times lower than gasoline fuelled engine. Finally, both first and second law efficiencies have improved with hydrogen fuelled engine compared to gasoline engine. It has been proved that hydrogen is a very good candidate as an engine fuel. The obtained data are also very useful for operational changes needed to optimize the hydrogen fueled SI engine design.

    Effects of Oxygenate Concentration on Species Mole Fractions in Premixed N-Heptane Flames

    Atmospheric pressure, laminar, premixed, fuel-rich flames of n-heptane/oxygen/argon and n-heptane/oxygenate/oxygen/argon were studied at an equivalence ratio of 1.97 to determine the effects of oxygenate concentration on species mole fractions. The oxygen weight percents in n-heptane/oxygenate mixtures were 2.7 and 3.4. Three different fuel oxygenates (i.e. MTBE, methanol, and ethanol) were tested. A heated quartz micro-probe coupled to an on-line gas chromatography/mass spectrometry has been used to establish the identities and absolute concentrations of stable major, minor, and trace species by the direct analysis of samples, withdrawn from the flames. The oxygenate addition has increased the maximum flame temperatures and reduced the mole fractions of CO, low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, aromatics, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The reduction in mole fractions of aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon species by an increase in oxygenate concentration was more significant.

    Effects of Equivalence Ratio on Species and Soot Concentrations in Premixed N-Heptane Flames

    The micro-structure of laminar premixed, atmospheric-pressure, fuel-rich flames of n-heptane/oxygen/argon has been studied at two equivalence ratios (C/O = 0.63 and C/O = 0.67). A heated quartz microprobe coupled to an online gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HP 5890 Series II/HP 5972) has been used to establish the identities and absolute concentrations of stable major, minor, and trace species by the direct analysis of samples withdrawn from the flames. Benzene was the most abundant aromatic compound identified. The largest PAH detected were the family of C18H10 (molecular weight of 226) that include cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene, with peak concentrations reaching 8 ppm and 6 ppm, respectively. Soot particle diameters, number densities, and volume fractions were determined using classical light scattering and extinction measurements. The largest soot particle diameter measured was about 18 nm and the soot volume fraction reached the amount of 4.9 × 10-7.
