Adaptive Limited Feedback Scheme for Stream Selection Based Interference Alignment in Heterogeneous Networks
(IEEE, 2016) Beyazıt, Esra Aycan; Özbek, Berna; Le Ruyet,D.
This paper presents a stream selection based interference alignment approach with imperfect channel state information for heterogeneous networks. The proposed algorithm performs the selection of a stream sequence among a predetermined set of sequences. Those selected sequences are the ones that mostly contribute to the sum rate when performing the exhaustive search. These stream sequences form a regular structure where the first stream is associated to a pico user. The effect of imperfect channel state information on the proposed algorithm is analyzed and a bit allocation scheme is proposed by deriving an upper bound on the rate loss due to quantization. © 2016 IEEE.

Carrier Frequency Offset Based Shared Randomness for Secure Transmission in M-Psk Noma
(IEEE, 2023) Göztepe, Caner; Karabulut Kurt, Güneş; Özbek, Berna
Power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enhances spectral efficiency by superposing multiple users in the same time-frequency resource block at the expense of exposing the users' data. However, current approaches to improve the secrecy levels of users are limited to rate reduction. This paper proposes a secure NOMA system based on the shared randomness extracted from the reciprocal carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between the transmitter-receiver pairs for M-ary phase-shift keying. As multiple users will have physically separated oscillators, it will result in independent CFOs among users. This randomness is used to introduce a constellation rotation in the transmitted symbols. We show that under ideal CFO estimates, the proposed approach achieves perfect secrecy among all NOMA users without introducing any rate reduction. We also demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed approach by using a software-defined radio-based test bed. © 2023 IEEE.

Integrated Space Domain Awareness and Communication System
(IEEE, 2023) Geçgel Çetin, Selen; Özbek, Berna; Karabulut Kurt, Güneş
Space has been reforming and this evolution brings new threats that, together with technological developments and malicious intent, can pose a major challenge. Space domain awareness (SDA), a new conceptual idea, has come to the forefront. It aims sensing, detection, identification and countermeasures by providing autonomy, intelligence and flexibility against potential threats in space. In this study, we first present an insightful and clear view of the new space. Secondly, we propose an integrated SDA and communication (ISDAC) system for attacker detection. We assume that the attacker has advanced communication capabilities to vary attack scenarios, such as random attacks on some receiver antennas. To track random patterns and meet SDA requirements, a lightweight convolutional neural network architecture is developed. The proposed ISDAC system shows superior and robust performance under 12 different super-attacker configurations with a detection accuracy of over 97.8%. © 2023 IEEE.

A Framework for Physical Layer Network Coding With Multiple Antennas for Bpsk
(IEEE, 2023) İlgüy, Mert; Özbek, Berna
Physical layer network coding (PNC) is combined with multiple antennas to increase the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. In this work, we present a PNC framework including both uplink and downlink for binary phase shift keying (BPSK). In the uplink, we propose a scheme for detecting network-coded symbol (NCS) with reduced complexity. For the downlink, we propose a transmission scheme of NCS through maximum ratio transmission (MRT) by defining the precoding vector as an average of users' channels. The bit-error-rate (BER) performances and the comparison results with the conventional scheme in both downlink and uplink are provided for the proposed low-complexity PNC framework.

Physical Layer Network Coding Enabled Noma With Multiple Antennas
(IEEE, 2022) İlgüy, Mert; Özbek, Berna; Okyere, Bismark; Musavian, Leila; Pereira, Aathur
In this work, a combination of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with multiple antennas and physical layer network coding (PNC) scheme is proposed to increase the overall data rate. In the proposed scheme, we employ higher-order modulations for the users with relatively high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the PNC-NOMA pair to increase the data rate. Meanwhile, lower-order modulations are chosen for the users with relatively lower SNR values in the PNC-NOMA pair. We showed the results in terms of bit error rate (BER) for different number of antennas and users in the proposed PNC-NOMA scheme. © 2022 IEEE.

Interference Mitigation for Device-To Based Cellular Communications
(IEEE, 2022) Acar, Süleyman Onur; Özbek, Berna
Device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks can improve the performance of cellular systems and it provides an effective way to meet growing mobile traffic and capacity demand. When user equipments are located in close proximity, they can communicate through direct links. In this case, D2D links can increase both energy and spectrum efficiency by reusing uplink (UL) cellular resources while satisfying the users' quality-of-service requirements. However, integrating D2D links into the cellular infrastructure causes an interference since D2D communication can increase co-channel interference and degrade cellular users' transmission link quality. In this paper, the interference mitigation techniques including power control, multiple antenna and resource allocation based on graph coloring are proposed for D2D communications underlaying cellular systems to increase the data rate of both the cellular users and D2D pairs. Compared to the prior works, in the proposed algorithm, D2D and cellular users have same priority for resource allocation. Finally, the proposed algorithm improves the overall system capacity significantly.

Limited Feedback Design for Massive Full Dimension Mimo Systems
(IEEE, 2022) Özbek, Berna; Arslan, Caner; Demirtaş, Mahmut; Şahan, Hüsne; Kadı, Furkan Kerim; Elçi, Erdem
Massive Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) systems serve simultaneously multiple users to increase spectral efficiency in wireless communication systems. Using two dimension antenna design for massive MIMO systems namely massive FD-MIMO, the overall system performance is further improved. For the massive FD-MIMO systems, the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the base station is essential to achieve overall performance gain. In this paper, we design limited feedback link for massive FD-MIMO by designing two separate codebooks for horizontal and elevation domains to reduce the feedback load. The simulation results are provided for the proposed scheme by considering 3-dimension wireless channel models.

Yüksek İrtifa Platform İstasyonları için Korelasyon Matrisinin Yaklaşımı
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021) Cengiz, Aybüke; Tedik Başaran, Semiha; Karabulut Kurt, Güneş; Özbek, Berna; Yanıkömeroğlu, Halim
A High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) is a new and promising technology with different uses like wireless communication services, traffic monitoring, navigation applications and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Since it is positioned much higher than ground-level users, line-of-sight (LOS) is more common in HAPS systems. Especially in HAPS systems that include multiple antennas, the effect of correlation between antennas is an important factor limiting the performance. The effect of correlation is strongly influenced by the spacing between the antenna elements and environmental factors. This effect can be reduced by the effect of rich scattering environment in terrestrial Multi-Input/Multi-Output (MIMO) systems, yet this observation is not applicable to HAPS systems. In this study, a tight bound expression for the correlation matrix which does not have an expression in closed form and has a significant place in the performance of HAPS systems has been obtained. Comprehensive numerical values have been obtained under different system parameters to demonstrate the convergence performance of the approximate expression to the real value, and the results have been compared. © 2021 IEEE.

A Novel Joint Index Modulation and Physical Layer Network Coding Mechanism for Beyond 5g
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021) Okyere, Bismark; Musavian, Leila; Özbek, Berna; Busari, Sherif A.; Gonzalez, Jonathan
In beyond 5G communications, besides energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE), latency and reliability are among the main metrics that extreme ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) applications must fulfill. Although new techniques are sought after to meet the crunching requirements of URLLC, combining existing phys-ical-layer techniques have become a compelling, attractive, and cost saving approach to achieving the same goal. In this article, we describe a novel mechanism combining physical layer network coding (PNC) and index modulation (IM) to achieve a balance between SE and EE for URLLC applications beyond 5G. PNC has the potential to increase SE because it leverages on interference from many transmissions occurring at the same time. Although fewer resources are required for IM the capacity gain is the same as if all transmission resources are used, and as a result, both EE and SE can increase simultaneously. Our simulation results show the feasibility of combining these two key physical-lay-er techniques, affirming the complementary role this approach will play in meeting the performance KPIs of URLLC beyond 5G. © 2017 IEEE.

Gezgin Rölelerin Dfbçe Tabanlı Hücresel Ağ Performansına Etkisi
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014) Baştürk, İlhan; Özbek, Berna
OFDMA-based mobile relay enhanced cellular networks which have lower infrastructure cost and larger coverage areas are important technologies for the next generation communication systems since they allow to communicate at higher data rates. However, it is required to develop efficient radio resource management algorithms in order to reveal these advantages. Thus, in this study, relay selection and resource allocation algorithms are proposed for the mobile relay enhanced cellular networks. It is revealed that the number of satisfied users and the data rate of the cell-edge users that are far from the base station and have lower channel gains are increased by using mobile relays with the proposed algorithms.
