Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Terahertz Wavefront Engineering Using a Hard-Coded Metasurface(Springer, 2023) Noori, Aileen; Akyürek, Bora; Demirhan, Yasemin; Özyüzer, Lütfi; Güven, Kaan; Altan, Hakan; Aygün, GülnurDuring the past few years, coding metamaterials (MM) drew significant attention, where the far-field scattering/transmission pattern of the electromagnetic wave (particularly in the THz regime) can be encoded into a single or few-bit digitized phase-response of the metasurface, thereby enabling a full digital control. Single-bit MMs contain two types of unit cells where the phase becomes 0 and 1 (in units of ?), respectively. By arranging these unit cells into a 2D surface pattern, the THz wavefront can be shaped. In this work, a novel hard-coded metasurface was designed, fabricated, and experimentally investigated for multi-beam reflection of incident THz beam. The design employs stripe and checkerboard patterns of bilayer MM unit cells consisting of square gold patches with a polymer spacing layer from a gold backplane. Experimental and simulation results show that the incident wave in the 0.500–0.750 THz range can be reflected with > 95% efficiency in uniform amplitude and 1-bit coded phase. For the checkerboard metasurface pattern, the measured and analytically calculated reflection angle shows good agreement. The metasurface design is suitable for large-scale fabrication and can potentially be used as a template in the development of actively coded metasurfaces. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.Article Citation - WoS: 20Citation - Scopus: 23Surface Free Energy and Wettability Properties of Transparent Conducting Oxide-Based Films With Ag Interlayer(Elsevier, 2021) Özbay, Salih; Erdoğan, Nursev; Erden, Fuat; Ekmekçioğlu, Merve; Rakop, Büşra; Özdemir, Mehtap; Aygün, Gülnur; Özyüzer, LütfiITO, ZTO, AZO and Ag are commonly used in transparent conducting oxide (TCO)/metal/TCO electrodes to form multilayered thin films on a suitable substrate. A detailed surface free energy (SFE) knowledge of these films is critical to design desirable TCO-based sandwich structures. In this study, TCO/Ag/TCO multilayer thin films were coated onto glass substrates using ITO, ZTO, AZO and Ag targets by magnetron sputtering. The wettability properties of TCO, Ag interlayer and TCO/Ag/TCO were evaluated by contact angle measurements of seven different liquids having various surface tension values. The dispersive and polar components of SFE were calculated using geometric and harmonic mean approaches. The acidic and basic components of SFE were calculated using van Oss-Chaudhury-Good method. Following this, the work of adhesion values between TCO films and Ag interlayer were estimated using SFE values of the films. The results show that the SFE components of the surfaces differ depending on the TCO type, the total SFE values of TCO/Ag/TCO films were lower than that of TCO films, and AZO/Ag adhesion is stronger than the other TCO/Ag structures. The reasons behind these differences were discussed by evaluating the SFE, XRD, AFM and SEM analysis simultaneously.Article Citation - WoS: 39Citation - Scopus: 46Surface Free Energy Analysis of Ito/Au Multilayer Thin Films on Polycarbonate Substrate by Apparent Contact Angle Measurements(Elsevier, 2020) Özbay, Salih; Erdoğan, Nursev; Erden, Fuat; Ekmekçioğlu, Merve; Özdemir, Mehtap; Aygün, Gülnur; Özyüzer, LütfiA detailed surface free energy (SFE) knowledge of transparent conducing oxide (TCO)/metal/TCO electrodes is necessary for their applications related to surface wettability. However, SFE analysis of these surfaces has not been performed systematically previously. In this study, ITO and ITO/Au/ITO multilayer thin films were coated onto O-2 plasma treated polycarbonate (PC) substrates by magnetron sputtering. The wettability characteristics of untreated PC, O-2 plasma treated PC, ITO, Au interlayer, and ITO/Au/ITO multilayer thin films were evaluated by apparent contact angle measurements of nine different test liquids having various surface tensions. Following this, Lifshitz-van der Waals, acidic, basic, dispersive, and polar components of SFE were calculated using acidbase, geometric and harmonic mean approaches. In the present study, in which the significance of calculation methods and selected liquid pairs on SFE parameters were investigated, the effect of Au interlayer presence on SFE parameters were also evaluated simultaneously. The results showed that the total SFE values of ITO/Au/ITO multilayer thin films were found to be higher than that of ITO surface. The reasons behind this difference were discussed in terms of SFE components obtained using various liquid pairs by different methods. The results were also supported with XRD, XPS, AFM, and TEM analysis.Article Citation - WoS: 31Citation - Scopus: 33The Controllable Deposition of Large Area Roll-To Sputtered Ito Thin Films for Photovoltaic Applications(Elsevier, 2020) Demirhan, Yasemin; Köseoğlu, Hasan; Türkoğlu, Fulya; Uyanık, Zemzem; Özdemir, Mehtap; Aygün, Gülnur; Özyüzer, LütfiIn the present study, using a large area roll-to-roll DC magnetron sputtering system deposition of ITO thin films on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates were achieved. In order to investigate the effect of growth conditions on the film properties all through the deposition process, optical emission spectroscopy (OES) analysis have been accomplished in a governable way. The consequences of Oxygen partial pressure and film thickness on electrical, and optical properties of the films were determined. It was shown that the intensity of optical emission peaks are subjected to the discharge power and as well as the O-2/Ar flow ratio. Large area, uniform ITO films with relatively high transparency and low electrical resistivity (R(2)(<)50 Omega/sqr) were succesfully deposited on PET substrates. The significance of both the figure of merit (FOM) and the optical band gap values on the performance of different TCO thin films were addressed. In this work, the obtained results suggest that the overall performance is sufficient to implement the ITO films in photovoltaic and OLED applications. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. With the Resonance Spin Excitation(American Physical Society, 2001) Zasadzinski, John F.; Özyüzer, Lütfi; Miyakawa, Nobuaki; Gray, Kenneth E.; Hinks, David G.; Kendziora, Christopher A.New break-junction tunneling data are reported in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ over a wide range of hole concentration from underdoped (Tc=74k) to optimal doped (Tc=95k) to overdoped (Tc=48k). The conductances exhibit sharp dips at a voltage, Ω/e, measured with respect to the superconducting gap. Clear trends are found such that the dip strength is maximum at optimal doping and that Ω scales as 4.9kTc over the entire doping range. These features link the dip to the resonance spin excitation and suggest quasiparticle interactions with this mode are important for superconductivity.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 18Tunneling Studies of Multilayered Superconducting Cuprate (cu,c)ba2ca3cu4o12+?(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd, 2003) Miyakawa, Nobuaki; Tokiwa, K.; Mikusu, S.; Zasadzinski, John F.; Özyüzer, Lütfi; İshihara, T.; Kaneko, Tsutomu; Watanabe, T.; Gray, Kenneth E.Point contact tunneling data are reported in a multilayered high-T c cuprate (Cu,C)Ba2Ca3Cu4O 12+δ with Tc = 117 K. The tunneling spectra in the superconducting state (T ≪ Tc) display spectral features such as well-defined superconducting gap peak at ±Δ as well as dip-hump structures beyond the peaks. In some cases, the spectra with two-gaps have been observed, indicating the coexistence of two inequivalent superconducting layers. The statistical distribution of superconducting gap magnitude suggests two distinct kinds of superconducting gaps that may originate from two inequivalent CuO2 planes, a characteristics of multilayered cuprates with n ≥ 3.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 7Comparative Study of Annealing and Gold Dopant Effect on Dc Sputtered Vanadium Oxide Films for Bolometer Applications(Springer Verlag, 2017) Alaboz, Hakan; Demirhan, Yasemin; Yüce, Hürriyet; Aygün, Gülnur; Özyüzer, LütfiVanadium oxide (VOx) thin film has been widely used for IR detectors and it is one of the promising materials for THz detectors due to its high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) values. VOx films with proper TCR values have also high resistance and it restricts bolometer performance especially for uncooled bolometers. To overcome this problem, deposition at elevated temperatures or annealing approach has been accepted and used but gold co-deposition approach has been proposed recently. In this study, vanadium oxide films were fabricated on high resistivity silicon substrates by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering in different O2/Ar atmosphere at room temperature. We investigated influence of oxygen partial pressure during deposition process and fabricated VOx thin films with sufficient TCR values for bolometer applications. In order to decrease resistivity of the deposited films, post annealing and gold doping approaches were performed separately. Effect of both post annealing process and gold doping process on structural and electrical properties of VOx thin films deposited at room temperature were investigated and detailed comparison between these methods were presented. We obtained the best possible approach to obtain optimum conditions for the highly reproducible VOx thin films which have the best resistivity and suitable TCR value for bolometer applications.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 7An Indium Tin Oxide Metasurface Filter for Terahertz Applications: Design, Fabrication, and Characterization(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd, 2017) Nebioğlu, Mehmet Ali; Takan, Taylan; Altan, Hakan; Demirhan, Yasemin; Alaboz, Hakan; Özyüzer, Lütfi; Sabah, CumaliIn this paper, using a cross-shaped complementary Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)-based metasurface design, the transmission of THz radiation is shown to be filtered within the 3 dB level from maximum in the frequency range of interest (333 GHz). Various metasurface structures primarily composed of cross-shaped openings with a 400 micron unit cell size are patterned on top of 1750 micron thick fused silica substrates. They are patterned using UV lithography methods after the films were grown using DC sputtering. The fabricated structures were characterized using Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) measurement technique. The measured transmission agrees well with the simulation of the structure for four different samples with different geometries. These results suggest that metasurface and/or metamaterial patterns based on ITO in visibly transparent media can be utilized for filtering of frequencies in the long wavelength spectrum. These types of filters can be very useful in the near future for THz communication and security applications. ©Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 13Metal Mesh Filters Based on Ti, Ito and Cu Thin Films for Terahertz Waves(Springer Verlag, 2016) Demirhan, Yasemin; Alaboz, Hakan; Özyüzer, Lütfi; Nebioğlu, Mehmet Ali; Takan, Taylan; Altan, Hakan; Sabah, CumaliIn this study, we have investigated the spectral performance of resonant terahertz (THz) bandpass filters which were produced from thin films with a metal-mesh shape. The aforementioned filters were fabricated from titanium, copper and indium tin oxide thin films on fused silica substrates by UV lithography with an array of cross-shaped apertures. Since the mesh period, cross-arm length and its width specify the spectral characteristics of the filters, we were able to reveal the performance of these filters experimentally using both a THz time domain spectrometer and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. A commercial electromagnetic simulation software, CST microwave studio, was used to verify the experimental data. The transmission of the filters are in the range 20–55 % at their relevant center frequencies. To our knowledge this study is the first to show that fabricated patterns based on ITO thin films can be used to filter THz radiation.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Thin Film Like Terahertz Bolometric Detector on Bi2212 Single Crystal(Springer Verlag, 2016) Semerci, Tuğçe; Demirhan, Yasemin; Miyakawa, Nobuaki; Wang, Huabing; Özyüzer, LütfiIn this study, we developed a microbolometer chip fabricated from high temperature superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212) single crystals for the terahertz (THz) detection. For the manufacturing of the microbolometer chips, Bi2212 single crystals were transferred on substrate in the thin film like form and electron beam lithography, ion beam etching techniques were used. Resistance versus temperature behavior of the bolometer chips were performed by four probe technique in liquid nitrogen cryostat. Bi2212 microchips were integrated and characterized using in our custom-designed cryogenic bolometer system instead of expensive and massive cooling systems. The fabricated microchips significantly detected signals from the Stefan-Boltzmann lamp which includes a portion of THz radiation. The detected power and response time were studied for Bi2212 thin film like microbolometer chips. Our results demonstrated the feasibility of improved Bi2212 microchips could be used for bolometric detection for THz applications.
