In the present study, β-apo-8′-carotenal was used as internal standard. Identification of carotenoids was carried out by comparing the retention time, absorption spectra, and mass spectra of unknown peaks with reference standards. All-trans-lutein was found to be the major carotenoid in this cyanobacterium, and, therefore, algal productivity and the potential for lutein accumulation were analyzed as a function of different nitrogen sources such as nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and urea for cultivation. Among them, urea clearly led to the best lutein accumulation. According to the experimental evidence, lutein increased from 2.54 to 3.34 mg g−1 in the cyanobacteria when urea was used as the nitrogen source. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.Article Citation - WoS: 8Hydrogen Sulfide Determination by Solid Surface Luminescence(Springer Verlag, 1996) Eroğlu, Ahmet Emin; Volkan, Mürvet; Bayramlı, Erdal; Ataman, O. Yavuz; Mark, Harry B.In the analytical system suggested, atmospheric hydrogen sulfide reacts with the surface of a filter paper treated with aqueous cadmium chloride and yields a luminescent species whose intensity can be correlated with the analyte concentration in ambient air. It was shown that the luminescent species are CdS solid particles which were formed in a well defined size. The paper luminescence was also tried on polymeric surfaces; polyethyleneoxide, polyvinyl alcohol, ethylcellulose and carboxymethylcellulose were found to give a similar luminescence signal. The system can be used on the tip of an optical fiber for an irreversible, cumulative type of analytical device for hydrogen sulfide determination. Identification of carotenoids was realized by comparing their absorption and mass spectral data with those of reference standards available and reported values. Chromatographic data were then combined with the spectroscopic information. The separation of carotenoids was achieved by C30 column and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection was used for their determination. In the present work, the carotenoid content of S. protuberans was found to be 1.45 mg/g of violaxanthin, 2.47 mg/g of all-trans-lutein, 0.15 mg/g of all-trans-α-carotene, 0.55 mg/g of all-trans-β-carotene, and 0.20 mg/g of 9 or 9′-cis-β-carotene. Due to lack of their standards, the amount of all-trans-loroxanthin and cis-isomers of other carotenoids could not be quantified. In order to validate the method, Certified Reference Material (BCR 485-Mixed vegetables) was used. In conclusion, this study can serve as a reference for the analysis of carotenoids in other microalgae.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 15Chitosan-Immobilized Pumice for the Removal of As(v) From Waters(Springer Verlag, 2014) Turan, Dilek; Kocahakimoğlu, Cemre; Boyacı, Ezel; Sofuoğlu, Sait Cemil; Eroğlu, Ahmet EminA novel sorbent, chitosan-immobilized pumice, has been prepared for the sorption of As(V) from waters prior to its determination by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. The success of the immobilization has been checked with such characterization techniques as scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. Points of zero charge of the sorbents were determined with potentiometric mass titration. Batch-type equilibration studies have shown that the novel sorbent can be employed at a wide pH range resulting in quantitative sorption (>90 %) at pH 3.0-7.0 and greater than 70 % sorption at pH >8.0. These results demonstrate the advantage of immobilizing chitosan onto pumice, because, under the same conditions, pumice displays <20 % sorption toward As(V), whereas chitosan gives approximately 90%sorption only at pH 3.0. The validity of the method was verified through the analysis of ultrapure, bottled drinking, and tap water samples spiked with arsenate; the respective sorption percentages of 93.2 (±0.7), 89.0 (±1.0), and 80.9 (±1.3) were obtained by batch-type equilibration. Arsenic sorption was also examined in the presence of common interfering ions resulting in competing effects of PO3- 4 and NO- 3on As(V) adsorption.
