The W boson is reconstructed via its hadronic decays, with the final-state products forming a single large-radius jet, owing to a high Lorentz boost of the W boson. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. The Wγ mass spectrum is parameterized with a smoothly falling background function and examined for the presence of resonance-like signals. No significant excess above the predicted background is observed. Model-specific upper limits at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction to the Wγ channel are set. Limits for narrow resonances and for resonances with an intrinsic width equal to 5% of their mass, for spin-0 and spin-1 hypotheses, range between 0.17 fb at 6.0 TeV and 55 fb at 0.7 TeV. These are the most restrictive limits to date on the existence of such resonances over a large range of probed masses. In specific heavy scalar (vector) triplet benchmark models, narrow resonances with masses between 0.75 (1.15) and 1.40 (1.36) TeV are excluded for a range of model parameters. Model-independent limits on the product of the cross section, signal acceptance, and branching fraction to the Wγ channel are set for minimum Wγ mass thresholds between 1.5 and 8.0 TeV. © 2022 The Author(s)Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 19Study of J/Ψ Meson Production Inside Jets in pp Collisions at S=8 TeV(Elsevier B.V., 2020) Sirunyan, A.M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Hensel, C.A study of the production of prompt J/ψ mesons contained in jets in proton-proton collisions at s=8TeV is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.1 fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. For events with at least one observed jet, the angular separation between the J/ψ meson and the jet is used to test whether the J/ψ meson is part of the jet. The analysis shows that most prompt J/ψ mesons having energy above 15 GeV and rapidity |y|<1 are contained in jets with pseudorapidity |η<inf>jet</inf>|<1. The differential distributions of the probability to have a J/ψ meson contained in a jet as a function of jet energy for a fixed J/ψ energy fraction are compared to a theoretical model using the fragmenting jet function approach. The data agree best with fragmenting jet function calculations that use a long-distance matrix element parameter set in which prompt J/ψ mesons are predicted to be unpolarized. The [Formula presented] mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7nb−1. The scalar product method is used to extract the v<inf>2</inf> coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range |y|<2.4, in the transverse momentum interval 0<p<inf>T</inf><50GeV/c, and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%. The data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0pb−1 (5 TeV), 6.2pb−1 (7 TeV), and 0.7pb−1 (13 TeV), were collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The second-order (v2) and third-order (v3) azimuthal anisotropy harmonics of unidentified charged particles, as well as v2 of KS 0 and Λ/Λ‾ particles, are extracted from long-range two-particle correlations as functions of particle multiplicity and transverse momentum. For high-multiplicity pp events, a mass ordering is observed for the v2 values of charged hadrons (mostly pions), KS 0, and Λ/Λ‾, with lighter particle species exhibiting a stronger azimuthal anisotropy signal below pT≈2GeV/c. For 13 TeV data, the v2 signals are also extracted from four- and six-particle correlations for the first time in pp collisions, with comparable magnitude to those from two-particle correlations. The data sample, collected with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7fb-1. The measurement is performed in the lepton+jets channel in which the products of the semileptonic decay t → b W with W → ℓν where ℓ is an electron or muon, are used to select t t ¯ events with large Lorentz boosts. The products of the fully hadronic decay t → b W with W → q q ¯ ′ are reconstructed using a single Cambridge–Aachen jet with distance parameter R= 1.2 , and pT> 400 GeV. The t t ¯ cross section as a function of mjet is unfolded at the particle level and is used to test the modelling of highly boosted top quark production. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. The search uses the MT2 variable, which generalises the transverse mass for systems with two invisible objects and provides a discrimination against standard model backgrounds containing W bosons. The observed yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model. The search is interpreted in the context of simplified SUSY models and probes slepton masses up to approximately 290, 400, and 450 GeV, assuming right-handed only, left-handed only, and both right- and left-handed sleptons (mass degenerate selectrons and smuons), and a massless lightest supersymmetric particle. Limits are also set on selectrons and smuons separately. Prompt J/ψ mesons decaying into two muons are reconstructed in the rapidity region in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame (ycm), corresponding to either −2.86<ycm<−1.86 or 0.94<ycm<1.94. The average v2 result from the two rapidity ranges is reported over the transverse momentum (pT) range from 0.2 to 10 GeV. Positive v2 values are observed for the prompt J/ψ meson, as extracted from long-range two-particle correlations with charged hadrons, for 2<pT<8 GeV. The prompt J/ψ results are compared with previous CMS measurements of elliptic flow for open charm mesons (D0) and strange hadrons. From these measurements, constraints can be obtained on the collective dynamics of charm quarks produced in high-multiplicity events arising from small systems. © 2019 The Author(s)Article Citation - WoS: 92Citation - Scopus: 106Search for an Lμ − Lτ gauge boson using Z → 4μ events in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV(Elsevier B.V., 2019) Sirunyan, A.M.; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Konstantinov, D.A search for a narrow Z′ gauge boson with a mass between 5 and 70 GeV resulting from an Lμ−Lτ U(1) local gauge symmetry is reported. Theories that predict such a particle have been proposed as an explanation of various experimental discrepancies, including the lack of a dark matter signal in direct-detection experiments, tension in the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and reports of possible lepton flavor universality violation in B meson decays. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.3 fb−1 recorded in 2016 and 2017 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Events containing four muons with an invariant mass near the standard model Z boson mass are analyzed, and the selection is further optimized to be sensitive to the events that may contain Z→Z′μμ→4μ decays. The event yields are consistent with the standard model predictions. Upper limits of 10−8–10−7 at 95% confidence level are set on the product of branching fractions B(Z→Z′μμ)B(Z′→μμ), depending on the Z′ mass, which excludes a Z′ boson coupling strength to muons above 0.004–0.3. These are the first dedicated limits on Lμ−Lτ models at the LHC and result in a significant increase in the excluded model parameter space. Measurements are performed in the W±→μ±νμ channel using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 173.4±6.1nb−1, collected by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC. The number of positively and negatively charged W bosons is determined separately in the muon pseudorapidity region in the laboratory frame |ηlab μ|<2.4 and transverse momentum pT μ>25GeV/c. The W± boson differential cross sections, muon charge asymmetry, and the ratios of W± boson yields for the proton-going over the Pb-going beam directions are reported as a function of the muon pseudorapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame. The measurements are compared to the predictions from theoretical calculations based on parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading-order. The mass of the top quark in the modified minimal subtraction (MS‾) renormalization scheme is extracted from a comparison of the differential top quark-antiquark (tt¯) cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the tt¯ system to next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions. The differential cross section is determined at the parton level by means of a maximum-likelihood fit to distributions of final-state observables. The analysis is performed using tt¯ candidate events in the e± μ∓ channel in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1. The extracted running is found to be compatible with the scale dependence predicted by the corresponding renormalization group equation. In this analysis, the running is probed up to a scale of the order of 1 TeV. © 2020 The Author(s)
