Conference Object Assessment of Drought in Izmir District Using Standardized Precipitation Index(Springer Nature, 2025) Mersin, D.; Gulmez, A.; Safari, M.J.S.; Vaheddoost, B.; Tayfur, G.One of the main issues with agro-food and socio-economical security in the world is droughts. Regardless of cause or effect, the ever-changing climate is placing increasing strain on water resources pushing supply to its limits. Izmir, a growing city in Turkey, is endowed with variety of water resources, such as lakes, rivers, seashores, and groundwater reserves. Therefore, it is crucial for the planning and development of the area to examine past and foreseeable drought occurrences and their possible impact on water resources. In this regard, the study’s goal is to assess historical droughts in Izmir District. Data from three meteorological stations in Küçük Menderes basin, collected between 1973 and 2020, are utilized in this study. To establish the validity of the posterior drought analysis, the consistency and trend in the time series are first examined using the double mass curve, run test, and linear trend analysis. The next step is to assess the historical deficit related to meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological droughts using the SPI and moving mean (MA) operator. The temporal analysis of SPI reveals distinct drought patterns across the stations, with multiple moderate to extreme droughts occurring particularly between 1998 and 2010, highlighting significant spatial and temporal variability in drought severity and frequency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.Article Future Circular Collider Feasibility Study Report: Volume 1 Physics, Experiments, Detectors(Springer Nature, 2025) Benedikt, M.; Zimmermann, F.; Auchmann, B.; Bartmann, W.; Burnet, J.P.; Carli, C.; Alonso, B.A.Volume 1 of the FCC Feasibility Report presents an overview of the physics case, experimental programme, and detector concepts for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). This volume outlines how FCC would address some of the most profound open questions in particle physics, from precision studies of the Higgs and EW bosons and of the top quark, to the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model. The report reviews the experimental opportunities offered by the staged implementation of FCC, beginning with an electron-positron collider (FCC-ee), operating at several centre-of-mass energies, followed by a hadron collider (FCC-hh). Benchmark examples are given of the expected physics performance, in terms of precision and sensitivity to new phenomena, of each collider stage. Detector requirements and conceptual designs for FCC-ee experiments are discussed, as are the specific demands that the physics programme imposes on the accelerator in the domains of the calibration of the collision energy, and the interface region between the accelerator and the detector. The report also highlights advances in detector, software and computing technologies, as well as the theoretical tools/reconstruction techniques that will enable the precision measurements and discovery potential of the FCC experimental programme. The content and structure of this report are guided by the scope and priorities defined in the mandate of the FCC Feasibility Study. It is therefore not intended to serve as an exhaustive review of the full physics potential of FCC. Several topics, already covered in earlier reports such as the FCC CDR, are not reiterated here or are addressed only briefly, in alignment with the study’s focus. This volume reflects the outcome of a global collaborative effort involving hundreds of scientists and institutions, aided by a dedicated community-building coordination, and provides a targeted assessment of the scientific opportunities and experimental foundations of the FCC programme. © CERN for the benefit of the FCC collaboration 2025.Book Part Food Question in Planning: Perspectives From Two Turkish Metropolis(Springer Nature, 2025) Özçam, Z.; Senalp, S.Ö.This study examines the integration of urban food systems into planning practices within Türkiye's two major metropolises: İzmir and Ankara. Addressing the challenges posed by climate change, urbanization, and economic crises, the research advocates for a transformative approach to urban food systems through socio-ecological and circularity frameworks. It identifies systemic vulnerabilities in the current agri-food systems, including environmental degradation, social inequalities, and inefficiencies in food production, distribution, and consumption. Through qualitative methodologies—semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observations, and content analysis of strategic planning documents—the study explores local agri-food strategies, emphasizing the critical need for holistic urban food planning. While İzmir demonstrates significant progress with its basin-based agricultural strategies, Ankara’s fragmented initiatives reveal a pressing need for cohesive urban food strategies. Both cities struggle with integrating rural-urban food linkages and systemic planning for storage, logistics, and equitable food access. The findings underscore the potential of localized, participatory governance in enhancing food sovereignty and resilience. However, the research highlights that piecemeal strategies remain insufficient to address the multifaceted challenges of food insecurity and environmental sustainability, advocating for comprehensive, equitable, and regenerative urban food systems as critical components of sustainable urban food planning and development. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.Book Part Therapeutic and Pharmaceutical Applications of Pegylated Nano-Carriers(Springer Nature, 2025) Shakeri, R.; Mirjalili, S.Z.; Karakus, C.O.; Safavi, M.The coating of the exterior of nanocarriers with polyethylene glycol (PEG; known as “PEGylation”), has emerged as one of the most widely adopted approaches to impart stealth properties to pharmaceutical nanocarrier systems. The PEGylation tactic offers a stealth barrier towards the adsorption of circulatory proteins owing to its hydrophilicity, elasticity, neutralization, and hydration properties. PEGylation dramatically provides sustained drug release benefits, reduces immune sensitivity, as well as improves the systemic circulation period, Overall, PEGylation effectively improves the therapeutic efficacy of the loaded therapeutic moiety in treating target cells and tissues. This chapter offers discussion on drug delivery nanosystems that are developed based on the principle of PEGylation strategy. This chapter examines the current status of closed basins in Turkiye and analyzes the natural and anthropogenic environmental stressors affecting these regions. Two distinct case studies are covered in this chapter: the Konya Closed Basin (KCB) and the Karakuyu region. Konya Closed Basin has experienced severe drought and sinkhole issues as a result of misapplications and excessive water consumption. The severity and frequency of water-related problems are increasing day by day due to the impact of climate change in the region. Agricultural activity and irrigation needs are high in the Karakuyu region, which is considered a second case study and is a small part of the Kucuk Menderes River Basin. It is hoped that with improved management practices, Karakuyu will not experience the condition of KCB in the future. Frequent weather extremes like droughts and floods and prolonged war and political instability lead the country far away from achieving water security, food reliance and sustainable management of its natural resources. The war situation also refrains in gathering of long-term hydrological data and thus, there is a huge gap in understanding the water resources even better. Furthermore, aids from international organizations are limited in groundwater development and management. This chapter highlights various issues and challenges in sustainable usage and the importance of groundwater in the country. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 19.7fb-1 collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm quark jets are selected using distinctive signatures of charm hadron decays. The product of the cross section and branching fraction σ(pp → W + c + X) B(W → ℓν) , where ℓ= e or μ , and the cross section ratio σ(pp → W ++ c ¯ + X) / σ(pp → W -+ c + X) are measured in a fiducial volume and differentially as functions of the pseudorapidity and of the transverse momentum of the lepton from the W boson decay. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. Both processes pp→pX and pp→Xp, i.e. with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where X includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at s=8Te during a dedicated run with β∗=90m at low instantaneous luminosity and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 37.5nb-1. The single-diffractive dijet cross section σjjpX, in the kinematic region ξ< 0.1 , 0.03<|t|<1Ge2, with at least two jets with transverse momentum pT>40Ge, and pseudorapidity | η| < 4.4 , is 21.7±0.9(stat)-3.3+3.0(syst)±0.9(lumi)nb. The ratio of the single-diffractive to inclusive dijet yields, normalised per unit of ξ, is presented as a function of x, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by the struck parton. The ratio in the kinematic region defined above, for x values in the range - 2.9 ≤ log 10x≤ - 1.6 , is R=(σjjpX/Δξ)/σjj=0.025±0.001(stat)±0.003(syst), where σjjpX and σjj are the single-diffractive and inclusive dijet cross sections, respectively. The results are compared with predictions from models of diffractive and nondiffractive interactions. The data sample was recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1. The measurement is performed for the ℓνjj final state (with ℓν indicating a lepton–neutrino pair, and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in a kinematic region defined by invariant mass mjj>120Ge and transverse momenta pTj>25Ge. The cross section of the process is measured in the electron and muon channels yielding σEW(Wjj)=6.23±0.12(stat)±0.61(syst)pb per channel, in agreement with leading-order standard model predictions. The additional hadronic activity of events in a signal-enriched region is studied, and the measurements are compared with predictions. The final state is also used to perform a search for anomalous trilinear gauge couplings. Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95% confidence level intervals are -2.3<cWWW/Λ2<2.5Te-2, -8.8<cW/Λ2<16Te-2, and -45<cB/Λ2<46Te-2. These results are combined with the CMS EW Zjj analysis, yielding the constraint on the cW W W coupling: -1.8<cWWW/Λ2<2.0Te-2. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.
