Article Technology-Enhanced Multimodal Learning Analytics in Higher Education: a Systematic Literature Review(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2025) Raşıt Yürüm, O.; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyMultimodal learning analytics (MMLA) is an emerging field of learning analytics and promises a more comprehensive analysis of the learning process thanks to advances in technological devices and data science. The purpose of this study was to explore technology-enhanced multimodal learning analytics in higher education systematically. A systematic literature review was performed using the PRISMA guidelines, and 45 studies published between January 2012 and June 2024 were determined. The findings demonstrated that China, the USA, Australia, and Chile were the leading contributors to MMLA research, with a notable surge in publications in 2021. Audio recorders, cameras, webcams, eye trackers, and wristbands were the most used devices. Most studies were conducted in experiment rooms or laboratories, though studies in authentic classroom settings have been growing. Data were primarily collected during activities such as programming, simulation exercises, presentations, discussions, writing, watching videos, reading, or exams, as well as throughout the entire instructional process, predominantly in computer science, health, and engineering courses. The studies were mainly predictive or descriptive whereas quite a few studies were prescriptive. Frequently tracked data types included audio, gaze, log, facial expression, physiological, and behavioral data. Traditional machine learning and basic statistics were the commonly used analytical methods whilst advanced statistics and deep learning were relatively less utilized. Test performance, engagement, emotional state, debugging performance, and learning experience were the popular target variables. Prediction models usually rely on two essential factors: software size and effort data. Measuring the size of the software can be done at various stages of the project with desired accuracy. Nevertheless, the industry faces challenges when it comes to collecting reliable actual effort data. Consequently, organizations encounter difficulties in establishing effort prediction models. Benchmarking datasets are available, but, in most cases, they have huge variances that make them less useful for effort prediction. In this study, we aimed to answer whether creating a software benchmarking dataset is possible by gathering the data from the literature. To the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive dataset that gathers the functional size and effort data of the studies from the literature is unavailable. For this purpose, we performed a systematic literature review to find studies that include projects measured with the COSMIC Functional Size Measurement (FSM) method and the related effort. As a result, we formed a dataset including 337 records from 18 studies that shared the corresponding size and effort data. Although we performed a limited search, we created a larger dataset than many datasets in the literature. In light of our review, we obtained that most studies did not share their dataset, and many lacked case details such as implementation environment and the scope of software development life cycle activities included in the effort data. We also compared the dataset with the ISBSG repository and found that our dataset has less variation in productivity. Our review showed the applicability of creating a software benchmarking dataset is possible by gathering the data from the literature. Izmir Institute of TechnologyPurpose - This study aims to provide a base for the policy-making process of rural built heritage conservation by systematically analysing existing legal aspects and policies in the literature. The primary objective is to help the policy-making process in countries that lack specific guidelines for the conservation of rural built heritage. It is also intended to play a role in the development of existing policies. Design/methodology/approach - The paper undertakes a comprehensive and systematic review of literature through 81 publications pertaining to the legal dimensions of RBH conservation. It processes the data obtained and presents it as bibliometric information utilizing VOS-viewer and Bibliometrix. The literature review results and data are associated with international regulations and documents. As a result, principles that will be helpful to the policy-making process are produced. Findings - The study reveals that interest in the subject has increased since 2018, mainly due to the influence of international charters, documents and developments in the field. The literature review shows that existing laws address the issue broadly rather than focusing directly on RBH. However, current policies, management plans and recommendations referred to in the literature are more closely related to RBH. Nonetheless, notable provisions in laws, international documents and local policies contribute to generating policy principles on the subject. Originality/value - The study fills a gap in the literature by examining RBH conservation from a legal perspective, systematically presenting the relevant literature to researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders in various contexts.
