The more they update their belongings, the more they feel unsatisfied. In this cultural recycling, everyday objects become objects of desire, while the notion of design functions to create attraction. The problem originates in the disengagement of subjects–objects in which the capitalist economic system gets benefits sustaining the cycle of mass production-consumption. To get more benefit, this cycle is sped up along with discount shopping context. The study aims to produce a design discourse in discount shopping context in relevance of the issues of individuality and ethics. The method is a textual analysis with critical studies perspective and deconstructionist approach. The texts are the questionnaire transcripts written by fifteen women. Critical studies perspective clarifies power relations between capitalist economic system and consumer; and deconstructivist approach determines binary relations in relevance of individuality, and ethics and heterogeneity of the texts concerning to design. Along with these two approaches, textual analysis creates a discursive structure. The structure is used to generate a design discourse in which the meaning of design is situated. In this structure, design would be something in a specific heterogeneity and relations around the matters of individuality and ethics. The discursive structure is of importance that summarizes the method used and determines all coherencies around the definitions of design. Portable ramps should allow for modifications in terms of weight, length, load bearing capacity, ease of handling, storage and further design parameters. Different types of portable ramps can be found in the market; however, their modifications cannot go beyond just length modification, or they allow to select just some restricted width options. However, portable ramps are quite suitable for mass customization concept which helps to satisfy customer while being involved in design step. This study aims to determine the wheelchair users' expectations and correspondingly to offer a smart mass customization design tool which potential users are able to interact with easily. To this end, a case study is conducted with a rollable ramp which is designed and developed within the scope of 1512 - Entrepreneurship Multi-phase Programme (Teknogirisim Sermaye Destegi Programi) of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TuBITAK). The methodology and its implementation are described elaborately, and example of a parametric smart customization tool design are illustrated in this study. First, the preliminary study is explained briefly. Afterward, the desired modification parameters are determined with literature and patent survey as well as observation and interviews with the potential users. After systematic review and evaluation of user experiences, the model is assessed.Article Citation - Scopus: 4Analysis of Design-Driven Innovation Practices in Turkish and Swedish Furniture Firms: an Exploratory Approach(Common Ground Research Networks, 2019) Aydın, Mahmut Ferit; Erkarslan, ÖnderThis study explores and analyzes recent design-driven innovation (DDI) practices in the furniture industries in Turkey and Sweden.2 The study was conducted in three phases: an in-depth literature review; the identification and selection of furniture companies; and analysis of the selected companies based on the strategic, operational, market-entry and organizational dimensions. We used case-study methods and conducted semi-structured interviews with designers and design managers of leading furniture companies from Turkey (Nurus, Ersa, Burotime, and Tuna Ofis) and Sweden (Offecct and Skandiform). Through cross-case analysis of national outcomes, we propose additional drivers to DDI theory, such as product segmentation, activity research, culture research and concept/designer research. The results of this study are crucial for all parties involved, as they suggest ways to achieve incremental and radical design-driven innovations. © Common Ground Research Networks, M.
