Using Z Boson Events To Study Parton-Medium Interactions in Pb-Pb Collisions
(American Physical Society, 2022) Karapınar, Güler; Karapınar, Güler; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The spectra measurements of charged hadrons produced in the shower of a parton originating in the same hard scattering with a leptonically decaying Z boson arc reported in lead-lead nuclei (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Both Pb-Pb and pp data sets are recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb(-1) and 320 pb(-1), respectively. Hadronic collision data with one reconstructed Z boson candidate with the transverse momentum p(T) > 30 GeV/c are analyzed. The Z boson constrains the initial energy and direction of the associated parton. In heavy ion events, azimuthal angular distributions of charged hadrons with respect to the direction of a Z boson are sensitive to modifications of the in-medium parton shower and medium response. compared to reference data from pp interactions, the results for central Pb-Pb collisions indicate a modification of the angular correlations. The measurements of the fragmentation functions and p(T) spectra of charged particles in Z boson events, which are sensitive to medium modifications of the parton shower longitudinal structure, are also reported. Significant modifications in central Pb-Pb events compared to the pp reference data are also found for these observables.

Dependence of Inclusive Jet Production on the Anti-K(t) Distance Parameter in Pp Collisions at Root S=13 Tev
(Springer, 2020) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, Güler; Karapınar, Güler; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The dependence of inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV on the distance parameter R of the anti-k(T) algorithm is studied using data corresponding to integrated luminosities up to 35.9 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment in 2016. The ratios of the inclusive cross sections as functions of transverse momentum p(T) and rapidity y, for R in the range 0.1 to 1.2 to those using R = 0.4 are presented in the region 84 < p(T)< 1588 GeV and |y|< 2.0. The results are compared to calculations at leading and next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant using different parton shower models. The variation of the ratio of cross sections with R is well described by calculations including a parton shower model, but not by a leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculation including nonperturbative effects. The agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions for the ratios of cross sections is significantly improved when next-to-leading order calculations with nonperturbative effects are used.

Study of J/Ψ Meson Production Inside Jets in pp Collisions at S=8 TeV
    (Elsevier B.V., 2020) Karapınar, Güler; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Hensel, C.; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
A study of the production of prompt J/ψ mesons contained in jets in proton-proton collisions at s=8TeV is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.1 fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. For events with at least one observed jet, the angular separation between the J/ψ meson and the jet is used to test whether the J/ψ meson is part of the jet. The analysis shows that most prompt J/ψ mesons having energy above 15 GeV and rapidity |y|<1 are contained in jets with pseudorapidity |η<inf>jet</inf>|<1. The differential distributions of the probability to have a J/ψ meson contained in a jet as a function of jet energy for a fixed J/ψ energy fraction are compared to a theoretical model using the fragmenting jet function approach. The data agree best with fragmenting jet function calculations that use a long-distance matrix element parameter set in which prompt J/ψ mesons are predicted to be unpolarized. This technique demonstrates a new way to test predictions for prompt J/ψ production using nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Measurement of the Cross Section for T(t)over-Bar Production With Additional Jets and B Jets in Pp Collisions at Root S=13tev
(Springer Verlag, 2020) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, Güler; Karapınar, Güler; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Measurements of the cross section for the production of top quark pairs in association with a pair of jets from bottom quarks (sigma(t (t) over barb (b) over bar)) and in association with a pair of jets from quarks of any flavor or gluons (sigma(t (t) over bar jj)) and their ratio are presented. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The measurements are performed in a fiducial phase space and extrapolated to the full phase space, separately for the dilepton and lepton+jets channels, where lepton corresponds to either an electron or a muon. The results of the measurements in the fiducial phase space for the dilepton and lepton+jets channels, respectively, are sigma(t (t) over bar jj) = 2.36 +/- 0.02 (stat)+/- 0.20 (syst) pb and 31.0 +/- 0.2 (stat)+/- 2.9 (syst) pb, and for the cross section ratio 0.017 +/- 0.001 (stat)+/- 0.001 (syst) and 0.020 +/- 0.001 (stat)+/- 0.001 (syst). The values of sigma(t (t) over barb (b) over bar) are determined from the product of the sigma(t (t) over bar jj) and the cross section ratio, obtaining, respectively, 0.040 +/- 0.002 (stat)+/- 0.005 (syst) pb and 0.62 +/- 0.03 (stat)+/- 0.07 (syst) pb. These measurements are the most precise to date and are consistent, within the uncertainties, with the standard model expectations obtained using a matrix element calculation at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics matched to a parton shower.

Measurement of Quark- and Gluon-Like Jet Fractions Using Jet Charge in Pbpb and Pp Collisions at 5.02 Tev
(Springer Verlag, 2020) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, Güler; Karapınar, Güler; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of particles inside a jet, known as jet charge, is sensitive to the electric charge of the particle initiating the parton shower. This paper presents jet charge distributions in root sNN = 5.02 TeV lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. These data correspond to integrated luminosities of 404 mu b(-1)and 27.4 pb(-1)for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Leveraging the sensitivity of the jet charge to fundamental differences in the electric charges of quarks and gluons, the jet charge distributions from simulated events are used as templates to extract the quark- and gluon-like jet fractions from data. The modification of these jet fractions is examined by comparing pp and PbPb data as a function of the overlap of the colliding Pb nuclei (centrality). This measurement tests the color charge dependence of jet energy loss due to interactions with the quark-gluon plasma. No significant modification between different centrality classes and with respect to pp results is observed in the extracted quark- and gluon-like jet fractions.

Search for Top Squark Pair Production in Compressed-Mass Scenarios in Proton-Proton Collisions at S=8 Tev Using the Αt Variable
    (Elsevier B.V., 2017) Khachatryan, V.; Karapınar, Güler; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Cabrillo, I.J.; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
An inclusive search is performed for supersymmetry in final states containing jets and an apparent imbalance in transverse momentum, p→T miss, due to the production of unobserved weakly interacting particles in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data, recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 18.5 fb−1. The dimensionless kinematic variable αT is used to discriminate between events with genuine p→T miss associated with unobserved particles and spurious values of p→T miss arising from jet energy mismeasurements. No excess of event yields above the expected standard model backgrounds is observed. The results are interpreted in terms of constraints on the parameter space of several simplified models of supersymmetry that assume the pair production of top squarks. The search provides sensitivity to a broad range of top squark (t˜) decay modes, including the two-body decay t˜→cχ˜1°, where c is a charm quark and χ˜1° is the lightest neutralino, as well as the four-body decay t˜→bff¯′χ˜1°, where b is a bottom quark and f and f¯′ are fermions produced in the decay of an intermediate off-shell W boson. These modes dominate in scenarios in which the top squark and lightest neutralino are nearly degenerate in mass. For these modes, top squarks with masses as large as 260 and 225 GeV are excluded, respectively, for the two- and four-body decays. © 2017 The Author

Measurement of the Triple-Differential Dijet Cross Section in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=8tev and Constraints on Parton Distribution Functions
(Springer Nature, 2017) Sirunyan, A.M.; Karapınar, Güler; Adam, W.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Brandstetter, J.; Barney, D.; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
A measurement is presented of the triple-differential dijet cross section at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV using 19.7fb-1 of data collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section is measured as a function of the average transverse momentum, half the rapidity separation, and the boost of the two leading jets in the event. The cross section is corrected for detector effects and compared to calculations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order accuracy, complemented with electroweak and nonperturbative corrections. New constraints on parton distribution functions are obtained and the inferred value of the strong coupling constant is αS(MZ)=0.1199±0.0015(exp)-0.0020+0.0031(theo), where MZ is the mass of the Z boson. © 2017, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

Measurement of Differential Cross Sections for Z Boson Production in Association With Jets in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13tev
(Springer Nature, 2018) Sirunyan, A.M.; Karapınar, Güler; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Fouz, M.C.; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The production of a Z boson, decaying to two charged leptons, in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV is measured. Data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC are used that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.19fb-1. The cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity and its dependence on the transverse momentum of the Z boson, the jet kinematic variables (transverse momentum and rapidity), the scalar sum of the jet momenta, which quantifies the hadronic activity, and the balance in transverse momentum between the reconstructed jet recoil and the Z boson. The measurements are compared with predictions from four different calculations. The first two merge matrix elements with different parton multiplicities in the final state and parton showering, one of which includes one-loop corrections. The third is a fixed-order calculation with next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy for the process with a Z boson and one parton in the final state. The fourth combines the fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of the process with no parton in the final state with next-to-next-to-leading logarithm resummation and parton showering. © 2018, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

Event Shape Variables Measured Using Multijet Final States in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=13 Tev
(Springer Verlag, 2018) Karapınar, Güler; Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The study of global event shape variables can provide sensitive tests of predictions for multijet production in proton-proton collisions. This paper presents a study of several event shape variables calculated using jet four momenta in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and uses data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb(-1). After correcting for detector effects, the resulting distributions are compared with several theoretical predictions. The agreement generally improves as the energy, represented by the average transverse momentum of the two leading jets, increases.

Search for Production of Higgs Boson Pairs in the Four B Quark Final State Using Large-Area Jets in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S 13 Tev
(Springer Verlag, 2019) Karapınar, Güler; Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
A search is presented for pair production of the standard model Higgs boson using data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The final state consists of two b quark-antiquark pairs. The search is conducted in the region of phase space where one pair is highly Lorentz-boosted and is reconstructed as a single large-area jet, and the other pair is resolved and is reconstructed using two b-tagged jets. The results are obtained by combining this analysis with another from CMS looking for events with two large jets. Limits are set on the product of the cross sections and branching fractions for narrow bulk gravitons and radions in warped extradimensional models having a mass in the range 750-3000 GeV. The resulting observed and expected upper limits on the non-resonant Higgs boson pair production cross section correspond to 179 and 114 times the standard model value, respectively, at 95% confidence level. The existence of anomalous Higgs boson couplings is also investigated and limits are set on the non-resonant Higgs boson pair production cross sections for representative coupling values.
