    Helenistik Kulelerde Yanal Yüke İlişkin Düzlem İçi ve Düzlem Dışı Duvar Davranışının Duvar Profilleri ve Açıklık Düzenlerine Bağlı Olarak İncelenmesi

    Dry masonry wall profiles constructed without using bonding material between blocks are encountered in different building types dated to Greek, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Depending on development of earthquake experiences, dry masonry wall profiles vary in terms of wall thickness, number of layers, relationship of layers and size, form, organization and relationship of blocks. In this study, the construction details increasing the structural strength in watch towers constructed in Hellenistic Period are aimed to be determined. This study is limited with investigation of effect of wall profiles and opening organizations on in-plane and out-of-plane wall behaviors under lateral loading. Primarily, wall profiles and opening types of dry masonry towers in ancient Caria, Pamphylia and Cilicia regions, that have not lost authenticity and integrity or had information about their authentic form, were documented. By using gathered data, hypothetic towers with different wall profiles and opening types are designed. To determine in-plane and out-of-plane wall behavior of hypothetic towers, simulation of quasi-static tilt analysis based on equilibrium were carried out, and form changes at walls and collapse angles of towers were identified. Wall profile and opening properties effecting on structural strength under lateral loading were determinedd.

    Consolidation of a Bath Ruin in an Archaeological Site

    The study has focused on consolidation of a historical bath ruin in an archaeological site. Cevher Pasa Bath, which is located in Tabae archaeological site in Denizli, Turkey and dated to the 15th century, presents structural problems. The aim of the study is to propose a framework for planning consolidation of the ruins of Cevher Pasa Bath so that conservation work regarding similar masonry ruins in archaeological sites can be guided. Thus, methods of architectural restoration and civil engineering are combined in an interdisciplinary scope. Provision of temporary shoring as an emergency intervention, consolidation and presentation of the ruin within the scope of an interdisciplinary restoration project, and monitoring of the asset within the frame of a monument management plan are suggested, respectively. Structural analysis considering stress and overturning moment checks are performed. Consolidation work includes only supporting of arch remains. Some walls of the ruin are weaker than other parts. These parts need further detailed analysis, and if necessary, further consolidation and strengthening are to be carried out. The monument management plan points out the necessity of collaboration of local and central administrations, and also non-governmental organisations.

    Structural Vulnerability of Ancient Dry Masonry Towers Under Lateral Loading

    Understanding how the original characteristics contribute to the structural behaviour of antique structures should be the initial stage of planning for conservation work. This study aims to identify the structural behaviour of dry masonry towers under lateral loadings, so that the decision-making process when determining their restoration can be adequately supported. Dry masonry towers in ancient Caria, Pamphylia, and Cilicia Regions are examined. Each of these three areas have very different seismic characteristics. A hypothetical testing process was designed by combining different characteristics from each of the towers. As a result, the characteristics affecting the structural resistance were determined as; the staggering ratio, the stone depth, the ratio between block length and height, the proportional relationship between height and length, the area, number and position of openings, and the distribution of header stones. These characteristics all interact together to determine the failure mechanism; so, understanding this interaction is critical when considering conservation. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

    Mimari Fotogrametri Alanındaki Çağdaş Gelişimlerin Değerlendirilmesi

    Sayısal (dijital) veya analog (fotoğrafik) görüntüler üzerindeki bilgilerin, mimari nesnelerin ölçekli görsel belgelerinin elde edilmesinde kullanılmak üzere değerlendirilmesi tekniklerinin bütününe mimari fotogrametri denilmektedir. Tarihi uygulamalarda genellikle ayrıntılı cephe çizimleri ile belgeleme sonuçları sunulurken, çağdaş olanaklar, koruma uzmanı mimarın gereksinim duyduğu çözümleyici görselleştirmelerin sunumuna da olanak vermiştir. Artık fotogrametri ile belgelenen tarihi binalar; bilgisayar ortamında hazırlanan üç boyutlu modelleri, çeşitli perspektifleri ve tematik bilgilerin döküldüğü ayrıntılı haritaları ile incelenebilmektedirler. Etkileşimsel çoklu ortamda gerçekleştirilen sunumlar da yapılabilmektedir. Bu sunumlara olanak veren yüksek geometrik hassasiyetteki filmli ve dijital fotoğraf makineleri, yüksek çözünürlükteki tarayıcılar ve görüntü değerlendirme yazılımları hızla geliştirilmektedir. Diğer yandan fotogrametrinin temel ilkeleri yeniden yorumlanarak yöntem kurguları çeşitlenmektedir. Tüm bu çağdaş gelişimlerin mimari koruma alanındaki yeri, derlenen kaynaklar yorumlanarak bu yazı kapsamında vurgulanmıştır.

    Evaluation of Gis and Bim Roles for the Information Management of Historical Buildings

    An architectural heritage object carries heterogeneous and multi-layered information beyond physical characteristics. It requires an integrated representation of various types of information for understanding and management prior to the decision-making process of conservation. This requirement is a twofold manner consisting of representation and management processes. There exists a variety of approaches for representation of heritage objects in digital three-dimensional (3D) environment, but the selection of the appropriate one according to the needs is crucial. On one hand, there have been recently great attempts to adopt Building Information Modeling (BIM) for historical buildings. Nevertheless, the related works in the topic focus mainly on pre-processing of data, such as the integration of born-digital material into a BIM environment and the creation of parametric objects according to historical building characteristics. As the information management of a historical building requires enhanced attribute management and integration of different datasets, further investigation on the BIM capabilities in management terms is crucial. On the other hand, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have great potentials in exploring spatial relationships, but their potential in 3D representation is still somehow limited. The paper reviews and evaluates the roles of BIM and GIS, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages for integration, retrieval and management of heterogeneous data in the context of historical buildings. © 2013 Copernicus.     Documentation of a Vernacular House With Close-Range Digital Photogrammetry

    This study aims to present a combined documentation method that can be easily applied on the built vernacular heritage prior to establishment of appropriate conservation methodology and treatment strategy. It takes into consideration the vernacular house type of Alaçati, Izmir, Turkey and defines the appropriate techniques to be used in the conservation aimed analytic recording process. The prismatic house masses at human scale, with plain façade orders and orthogonal plan layouts at this settlement can be recorded fast and accurately with close-range digital photogrammetry. The concepts of mapping should be utilized for the representation of analtic data. Within this frame, a 19th century house located in the urban conservation site of Alaçati is to be presented as the case study. © 2007 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.     Construction Techniques of Hayat Houses: Two Case Studies in the Vicinity of Izmir

    This study aims to contribute to the analytic studies on constructional aspects of the hayat house typology with an eye on its historical evolution for conservation purposes. The method used included a review of the surviving examples of the typology in Izmir and its vicinity and the selection of two intact examples whose structural components are legible: one from the earliest period and the other from the latest period. The examples selected are Kerimaga Konagi in Birgi, odemis, Izmir and a house in Kirkagac, Soma, Manisa. The early example (probably eighteenth century, constructed over the remains of an older house) sustains the traditional box system in its wooden upper story that integrates with the roof. The provision of level differences on the upper floor, the traditional relationship of the sitting level-window design, and masonry base are its authentic features. The late example (probably early twentieth century) presents signs of modernization, such as the establishment of a systematic wooden roof and wall frames in relation to each other, lack of diagonals in the perpendicular wall frame, avoidance of projections, and relatively elongated windows placed at higher positions.

    Conservation-Aimed Evaluation of a Historical Aqueduct in Izmir

    The seventeenth century was the era in which Izmir became an international commercial center in the eastern Mediterranean. The vizier of the era, Koprulu Fazil Ahmet Pasa, noticed the scarcity of potable water in relation with the increasing population at the center of this harbor city and ordered the construction of an aqueduct on Melez Valley. The Veziraga Aqueduct was constructed in 1674. This article aims to identify historical, architectural, and structural characteristics of the Veziraga Aqueduct so that its heritage values and conservations problems can be understood. The geographical and historical characteristics of the Veziraga Aqueduct are described by taking the effects of site and the sociocultural situation of city into consideration. The architectural characteristics of the aqueduct are prepared by using the site survey data to reveal the current condition and find out the original state. Seismic behavior of the aqueduct is investigated by using two approaches: analytical equivalent static analysis and finite-element analysis. The historical, architectural, and structural characteristics of the Veziraga Aqueduct prove its historical, documentary, and aesthetic values.

    Behind the 3d Scene: a Gis Approach for Managing the Chronological Information of Historic Buildings

    Historic buildings are representations of cultural systems throughout time. Thus, it is important to shed light on any given historic building’s chronological information by means of restitution, that is, the descriptions of different (re)compositions of a building for different historical states. However, the representation of information beyond the geometric, spatial, and physical characteristics of a historic building carries a crucial importance in the holistic understanding of historical changes. This requirement consists of representation, archival, assessment, and management aspects. Nevertheless, covering all these aspects is still quite challenging. Thus, three-dimensional (3D) visualization in digital platforms is considered, which indeed seems to be the most desirable way today. This article proposes a methodology through adopting an approach based on the Geographical Information System (GIS) and further develops a digital “container” as a 3D digital model for the archiving of a building’s chronological information. This does not only cover the geometric and spatial aspects, but also the historical resources and their reliability. The paper concludes that the developed prototype may lessen the future investigation effort of heritage specialists by making the chronological information of a historical building more integrated and coherent, through increased readability, accessibility, and visibility. This, in turn, supports the planning of restoration projects, as well as provides a static and comprehensive archive. © 2018 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

    Effect of Urban Transformation on the Values of Historic Sites Around Mosques: Two Cases in Manisa, Turkey

    This study presents a framework for assessing the cultural asset values of historic sites around mosques. Case studies are selected from provinces of Manisa, Turkey, namely, Çarşı in Salihli with its new urban development and Pazaryeri in Gördes that is abandoned and currently considered as an archaeological site. Literature review, archive research, historical research, comparative study, and site survey are carried out to evaluate the urban development of site neighborhoods with a retrospective perspective. An approach presenting the effects of urban transformations on the cultural asset values of the historic neighborhood centers is proposed. The cases reveal that the urban aesthetic is nearly all lost today, but the holiness of each site preserves its authenticity while the historic land use is sustained. Their preservation problems are lack of maintenance and abandonment due to disasters, illegal interventions, inappropriate development plans, and unsuitable restoration approaches. The principles proposed for managing these historic environments consider their cultural asset values in relation to urban history, development of coherent strategies for their presentation, and participation of all actors to their preservation and development. © 2020 The Authors
