Article 3D-Printed Soy Protein and Microalga Films: A Sustainable Approach with Antioxidant Functionality(Elsevier, 2026) Barekat, Sorour; Dogan, Buse; Uzuner, Sibel; Ubeyitogullari, AliThis study investigated the optimization and fabrication of soy protein isolate (SPI)-green microalga (MA) 3D-printed films. For optimizing 3D printing, the effects of MA concentration, nozzle size (0.52-0.81 mm), and speed (10-20 mm/s) were examined. The printed films were then dried, and color, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, structure, and antioxidant activity were analyzed. All the formulations showed shear-thinning behavior and rapid recovery. The concentration of 3 % MA, nozzle size of 0.72 mm, and printing speed of 20 mm/s were selected as the optimized conditions for the best 3D printability. Compared with the control, their elongation at break decreased by more than 16 %, while puncture strength increased by over 12 %, and tensile strength rose by more than 40 %. Water vapor permeability decreased by more than 40 % with the addition of MA. The microstructure images and secondary structure confirmed the formation of a less porous and stronger gel network with an increase in MA concentration from 0 to 5 % (w/w). The antioxidant properties of SPI films also increased two-fold with the addition of MA. These findings highlight that the 3D-printed edible films with antioxidant properties could be used as an eco-friendly and nutritious alternative to petroleum-based films in food packaging.Review Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 30Comparative Environmental Sustainability Assessment of Biohydrogen Production Methods(Elsevier, 2023) Goren, A. Yagmur; Dincer, Ibrahim; Khalvati, Ali; Gören, Ayşegül Yağmur; Dinçer, İbrahimAs energy crisis is recognized as an increasingly serious concern, the topic on biohydrogen (bioH(2)) production, which is renewable and eco-friendly, appears to be a highly-demanding subject. Although bioH(2) production technologies are still at the developmental stage, there are many reported works available on lab- and pilot-scale systems with a promising future. This paper presents various potential methods of bioH(2) production using biomass resources and comparatively assesses them for environmental impacts with a special emphasis on the specific biological processes. The environmental impact factors are then normalized with the feature scaling and normalization methods to evaluate the environmental sustainability dimensions of each bioH(2) production method. The results reveals that the photofermentation (PF) process is more environmentally sustainable than the other investigated biological and thermochemical processes, in terms of emissions, water-fossil-mineral uses, and health issues. The global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP) for the PF process are then found to be 1.88 kg-CO2 eq. and 3.61 g-SO2 eq., which become the lowest among all processes, including renewable energy-based H-2 production processes. However, the dark fermentation-microbial electrolysis cell (DF-MEC) hybrid process is considered the most environmentally harmful technique, with the highest GWP value of 14.6 kg-CO2 eq. due to their superior electricity and heat requirements. The water conception potential (WCP) of 84.5 m(3) and water scarcity footprint (WSF) of 3632.9 m(3) for the DF-MEC process is also the highest compared to all other processes due to the huge amount of wastewater formation potential of the system. Finally, the overall rankings confirm that biological processes are primarily promising candidates to produce bioH(2) from an environmentally friendly point of view.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 12Compositing Climate Change Vulnerability of a Mediterranean Region Using Spatiotemporally Dynamic Proxies for Ecological and Socioeconomic Impacts and Stabilities(Springer Verlag, 2017) Demirkesen, Ali Can; Evrendilek, FatihThe study presents a new methodology to quantify spatiotemporal dynamics of climate change vulnerability at a regional scale adopting a new conceptual model of vulnerability as a function of climate change impacts, ecological stability, and socioeconomic stability. Spatiotemporal trends of equally weighted proxy variables for the three vulnerability components were generated to develop a composite climate change vulnerability index (CCVI) for a Mediterranean region of Turkey combining Landsat time series data, digital elevation model (DEM)-derived data, ordinary kriging, and geographical information system. Climate change impact was based on spatiotemporal trends of August land surface temperature (LST) between 1987 and 2016. Ecological stability was based on DEM, slope, aspect, and spatiotemporal trends of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), while socioeconomic stability was quantified as a function of spatiotemporal trends of land cover, population density, per capita gross domestic product, and illiteracy. The zones ranked on the five classes of no-to-extreme vulnerability were identified where highly and moderately vulnerable lands covered 0.02% (12 km2) and 11.8% (6374 km2) of the study region, respectively, mostly occurring in the interior central part. The adoption of this composite CCVI approach is expected to lead to spatiotemporally dynamic policy recommendations towards sustainability and tailor preventive and mitigative measures to locally specific characteristics of coupled ecological–socioeconomic systems.
