The aim of this article is the comparison of the flexural properties of FML/Al foam sandwich panels bonded with various surface modification approaches (silane treatment and combination of silane treatment with polypropylene (PP) based film addition). The FML/foam sandwich systems were fabricated by laminating the components in a mould at 200 A degrees C under 1.5 MPa pressure. The energy absorbtion capacities and flexural mechanical properties of the prepared sandwich systems were evaluated by mechanical tests. Experiments were performed on samples of varying foam thicknesses (8, 20 and 30 mm). The bonding among the sandwich components were achieved by various surface modification techniques. The Al sheet/Al foam sandwiches were also consolidated by bonding the components with an epoxy adhesive to reveal the effect of GFPP on the flexural performance of the sandwich structures.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 9A Smart Mass Customization Design Tool: a Case Study of a Portable Ramp for Wheelchair Users(Springer Verlag, 2020) Doğan Kumtepe, Elvan; Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri; Çorbacıoğlu, Eda; Daim, Tuğrul Ünsal; Shaygan, AmirPortable ramps are generally used by wheelchair users, provide temporary solution to increase accessibility in their daily lives. Portable ramps should allow for modifications in terms of weight, length, load bearing capacity, ease of handling, storage and further design parameters. Different types of portable ramps can be found in the market; however, their modifications cannot go beyond just length modification, or they allow to select just some restricted width options. However, portable ramps are quite suitable for mass customization concept which helps to satisfy customer while being involved in design step. This study aims to determine the wheelchair users' expectations and correspondingly to offer a smart mass customization design tool which potential users are able to interact with easily. To this end, a case study is conducted with a rollable ramp which is designed and developed within the scope of 1512 - Entrepreneurship Multi-phase Programme (Teknogirisim Sermaye Destegi Programi) of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TuBITAK). The methodology and its implementation are described elaborately, and example of a parametric smart customization tool design are illustrated in this study. First, the preliminary study is explained briefly. Afterward, the desired modification parameters are determined with literature and patent survey as well as observation and interviews with the potential users. MertThe provision of infrastructure is an important policy tool for promoting regional growth and reducing regional disparities. The main reason underlying this approach is the view that transportation promotes mobility, mobility promotes trade, and trade promotes economic growth. Based on this view, Turkey has invested in transportation infrastructure to reduce the regional economic inequalities since the 1960s. Between 2004 and 2014, governments have expended approximately 65 billion dollars for road infrastructure only. We believe that investigating the recent improvements in road infrastructure with a spatial perspective in an emerging economy as Turkey is necessary to generate more effective and practical regional policies. This study attempts to measure the latest developments of transportation infrastructure by analyzing the spatial effects of road transport infrastructure on regional economy in Turkish NUTS 2 regions between 2004 and 2014. We employ an augmented Cobb-Douglas production function model and use spatial Durbin model to estimate spatial effects. Apart from previous studies that employ spatial econometric models, we create a different spatial weight matrix for each year based on inverse distance to capture the change between the years 2004 and 2014. The results reveal that road infrastructure investment has significant and positive spatial spillover effects on regional growth. Any improvement in road transport infrastructure in a region causes a GDP increase in neighboring regions. Essentially the findings expose the importance of indirect effects of road transport infrastructure and contradict with previous non-spatial and overestimated effect results in the literature.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 8The Effect of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (swcnt) Concentration on the Mechanical and Rheological Behavior of Epoxy Matrix(Springer Verlag, 2020) Ay, Z.; Tanoğlu, MetinThe improvement of Mode I fracture toughness of epoxy by the addition of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is considered. To prepare nanocomposites, chemical-vapor-deposition-grown SWCNTs noncovalently functionalized with an ethoxylated alcohol was used as the additive and a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A-based epoxy as the matrix material. The SWCNTs were dispersed in the epoxy matrix via a mechanical stirrer and a 3-roll mill. The effect of their concentration (0.0125, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%) on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated, and the optimum concentration was determined. Mode I fracture toughness (single-edge-notch 3-point bending) and tensile tests were carried out on neat epoxy and SWCNT-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites. Their comprehensive field of view makes omnidirectional cameras appealing for security and ambient intelligence applications. Person detection is usually a core part of such applications. Conventional methods fail for omnidirectional images due to different image geometry and formation. In this study, we propose a method for person detection in omnidirectional images, which is based on the integral channel features approach. Features are extracted from various channels, such as LUV and gradient magnitude, and classified using boosted decision trees. Features are pixel sums inside annular sectors (doughnut slice shapes) contained by the detection window. We also propose a novel data structure called radial integral image that allows to calculate sums inside annular sectors efficiently. We have shown with experiments that our method outperforms the previous state of the art and uses significantly less computational resources.Article Traffic Aware Cell Selection Algorithm for Tetra Trunk Based Professional Mobile Radio(Springer Verlag, 2019) Özbek, Berna; Karataş, Azad; Bardak, Erinç Deniz; Sönmez, İlkerLoad balancing and traffic management are the critical needs in cell selection decision for a better and seamless communication demands in professional mobile radios. For the cases where cell selection algorithms do not consider the traffic load, there may be call drops due to the congestion in networks or longer call setup times for the users. These undesired consequences can cause dramatic quality degradation especially for the emergency cases or public safety services. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for Tetra Trunk based professional mobile radios by considering both traffic load and received signal strength indication (RSSI) in order to reduce the significant delays while establishing transmissions. The proposed full set cell selection algorithm is prioritized to reduce the call setup time for the mobile users and the proposed reduced set cell selection algorithm is focused on minimizing the number of RSSI measurements which causes significant delay in practical professional mobile radio. To conduct an empirical investigation into the correlation of CSFs with success of software projects, we adapt and extend in this work an existing contingency fit model of CSFs. To archive the above objective, we designed an online survey and gathered CSF-related data for 101 software projects in the Turkish software industry. Among our findings is that the top three CSFs having the most significant associations with project success were: (1) team experience with the software development methodologies, (2) team's expertise with the task, and (3) project monitoring and controlling. A comprehensive correlation analysis between the CSFs and project success indicates positive associations between the majority of the factors and variables, however, in most of the cases at non-significant levels. By adding to the body of evidence in this field, the results of the study will be useful for a wide audience. Software managers can use the results to prioritize the improvement opportunities in their organizations w.r.t. the discussed CSFs. Software engineers might use the results to improve their skills in different dimensions, and researchers might use the results to prioritize and conduct follow-up in-depth studies on those factors.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 13Analysis of European Hazelnut (corylus Avellana) Reveals Loci for Cultivar Improvement and the Effects of Domestication and Selection on Nut and Kernel Traits(Springer Verlag, 2019) Frary, Amy; Öztürk, Süleyman Can; Balık, Hüseyin İrfan; Kayalak Balık, Selda; Kızılcı, Gökhan; Doğanlar, Sami; Frary, AnneTurkey is a rich source of European hazelnut (Corylus avellana) germplasm with nearly 400 accessions in the national collection. This genetic material encompasses cultivars, landraces and wild genotypes which were characterized for 12 nut and 13 kernel traits over 2years in the 1990s. Analysis of these attributes revealed both the positive and negative impacts that human selection and breeding have had on hazelnut. Thus, while selection has resulted in larger nuts and kernels, cultivars have fewer nuts per cluster and kernels with larger internal cavities. Breeding has also resulted in a propensity for cultivars to have higher proportions of double kernels and empty nuts, two traits which reduce quality and yield. In addition, it is clear that while selection has successfully increased hazelnut fat content it has not impacted overall flavor, a much more complex trait. The nut and kernel phenotypic data were combined with genotypic data from 406 simple sequence repeat marker alleles for association mapping of the quantitative trait loci (QTL) for the traits. A total of 78 loci were detected in the population with the highest proportions for nut (24%) and kernel (26%) appearance parameters followed by quality (19%), shell thickness (16%) and yield-related (15%) traits. It is hoped that some of the identified QTL will be useful for future breeding of hazelnut for improved nut and kernel yield and quality.Article Traffic Load-Based Cell Selection for Apco25 Conventional-Based Professional Mobile Radio(Springer Verlag, 2020) Yılmaz, Saadet Simay; Özbek, Berna; Taş, Murat; Bengür, SıdıkaWireless communication between public safety officers is very important to transmit voice or data during emergency crises. When the public communication networks cannot provide services during crises, disasters, and high traffic cases, Professional or private mobile radio (PMR) such as Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO25) conventional systems are needed to improve the service quality and to provide uninterrupted service to the users. In this paper, we propose traffic-based cell selection algorithms for the APCO25 conventional systems to attach users to base stations in a balanced manner to reduce waiting time while establishing a connection. The simulation results of the proposed traffic load-based cell selection algorithms are illustrated in terms of the RSSI measurements counter, the number of connection requests, the average waiting time, and the number of re-selections for the APCO25 conventional systems.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 6Ssim-Based Adaptation for Dash With Svc in Mobile Networks(Springer Verlag, 2020) Çalı, Mehmet; Özbek, NükhetDynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) depends on adjustment of the quality of a video stream to the available network conditions. In order to increase Quality of Experience, average video quality should be maximized, while keeping the quality switching frequency at low levels. However, achieving high average quality with low switching frequency in highly fluctuating mobile network conditions is a tricky optimization problem. In order to overcome this problem, dynamic structure of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is utilized in this paper. Another challenge in the quality adaptation algorithms is to proper assessment of the video quality. Most of the adaptation algorithms takes either bitrate or representation level as the input that is used to evaluate the quality of the video. However, bitrate is not strongly correlated with the quality, as it depends on the content of the video. Likewise, representation quality relationship entirely bound to encoding. In this paper, in order to have a more reliable adaptation input, SSIM is used while representing the quality of the video stream. The proposed adaptation is compared with a successful SVC DASH adaptation algorithm using both subjective and objective tests. As a result, considerably higher scores are achieved in terms of both switching frequency and average quality.
