Article A Novel Approach by Combining Fuzzy Ahp and a Simulation Model To Analyze Suitability of Ports for Offshore Wind Farms(int Soc offshore Polar Engineers, 2025) Ozturk, Samet; Karipoglu, Fatih; Efe, BurakThis study presents a comprehensive suitability analysis for assessing the serviceability of existing container ports for offshore wind farms (OWFs) in Turkey, utilizing a combination of fuzzy analytical hierarchy process with Arena simulation modeling. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of offshore wind port infrastructure that integrates a multi-criteria decision making process with an Arena simulation model tailored specifically for existing container ports. The results indicate that technical criteria are deemed most critical, carrying the highest weight (0.563), with expansion potential identified as the most impactful criterion within the technical category. In addition, the study employs the Arena simulation software to forecast the operational workload on the most suitable ports following potential OWF installations.Article Exploring Women's Visceral Engagement With Electric Appliances in Turkish Kitchens(Springernature, 2025) Emgin, Bahar; Karaosmanoğlu, Defne; Ata, Leyla Bektaş; Karaosmanoglu, Defne; Ata, Leyla Bektas; Emgin, BaharThis paper investigates the narratives and experiences of women regarding cooking with small electric appliances. It intends to offer a novel perspective on gender and technology studies by foregrounding the visceral dimensions of these encounters. Drawing from a larger project on the historical representations and lived experiences of domestic technologies in Turkey, it highlights how the embodied dimensions of cooking shape the ways women perceive, adapt, and integrate technology into their daily lives. This study is based on interviews with twenty-seven women across five cities in Turkey conducted between 2022 and 2024. While small electric appliances are often marketed for convenience and efficiency, we argue that focusing solely on their instrumental benefits neglects the complex and visceral ways women engage with technology. A visceral approach remains an undervalued lens for understanding these interactions, particularly as women's embodied knowledge and relationships to kitchen appliances challenge scholarship that prioritizes progress and efficiency. As active agents, many women resist these technologies, viewing them as misaligned with the embodied knowledge and practices integral to cooking. By reevaluating the relationship between food, gender, and technology, we propose that such disengagement challenges the positivist reliance on science and technology, emphasizing the importance of embodied knowledge and everyday practices in shaping women's interactions with technology.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Revisiting the Turkish-Israeli Alliance of the 1990s(Routledge, 2023) Elhan, N.; Şirin, B.The Turkish-Israeli ‘honeymoon’ of the 1990s has been explained by different concepts such as alliance, strategic partnership, or cooperation and friendship, with these concepts often used interchangeably. As a corollary of the Turkish official narrative, which is based on a national security approach, certain explanations were offered in justification of the close relationship, including shared traditional democratic culture and secular character, as well as conducive international atmosphere. According to this construction, Turkey had no option but to align with Israel. On the other hand, while the ‘honeymoon’ was often seen as a foreign policy issue directly affected by the military bureaucracy, negative discourses against Israel in domestic politics, and institutional challenges in the Turkish state structure were often ignored. Therefore, the traditional houses of a region can guide new buildings in terms of adaptation to the climate. The study focuses on the climate-responsive properties of vernacular houses of Urla, İzmir. The study aims to reveal the specific strategies of the traditional houses of Urla in response to the hot and humid Aegean climate. Relating to this purpose, Postane Street, which is among the significant historic streets of the town, is selected as the case area to evaluate the vernacular houses of Urla. The research method is based on the climate-responsive strategies determined from the literature review in the first part. These criteria include “orientation to the sun and wind, the effect of direct sunlight and shading strategy, building envelope and form, interior space organization, integration of greenery, building materials, and roof strategy”. Climate Consultant and Design Builder Software were used to prepare the psychrometric graph and shading regime visualizations. The study showed that the climate-responsive strategies of the street’s vernacular houses are shaped to avoid excessive heat gain in the climate of Urla. In this study, we aimed to discuss the possible mechanisms, clinical aspects, and threat of visceralizing L. tropica.MethodsThis study includes seven cases of VL caused by L. tropica.Five patients were male (71%) and four were adults (57%).ResultsAll the VL patients complained of fever and splenomegaly. Fatigue, pancytopenia, and hepatomegaly were present in six patients each (86%), while weight loss and gastrointestinal system (GIS) symptoms were present in 5 patients (71%).ConclusionsIn this study, we have evaluated seven cases of visceralized L. tropica (VLT) in the context of the changing leishmaniasis epidemiology in Turkey. We have evaluated the possible mechanisms of visceralization; inter- and intraspecies genetic exchange with all the old world leishmaniasis agents present in the region, stress induced by inappropriate use of drugs, and possible ongoing adaptation mechanisms of Leishmania spp. The threat posed by VLT is significant as L. tropica is the most widespread and most common cause of leishmaniasis in Turkey. We do not know the vectorial capacity of the sand flies for the transmission of VLT strains or if these strains are in circulation in Turkey. Future studies should be carried out to investigate these issues as the transition of L. tropica from a mild disease-causing agent to a mortal one poses a significant public health concern for Turkey and Europe.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Recent Nation Gardens and Historical Development of Public Green Spaces in Turkey;(Istanbul University Press, 2020) Uzun,I.K.; Şenol,F.; Uzun, İpek Kaştaş; Şenol, FatmaFocusing on contemporary Turkey's "nation gardens" and the state and governmental policies to build them, this study investigated the development processes and design features of these public green spaces with respect to those from past eras of Turkey (extending to Ottoman and pre-Ottoman history) and the development of public green spaces as the state's symbolic and spatial tools. The study relied on secondary sources about public green spaces from past eras of Turkey and also on the review of online news about "nation gardens" initiated after President Erdoǧan's announcement in May 2018. Our findings suggested that public green spaces in Turkey have played an important role in displaying the state's power nationally and internationally as well as to transfer the state's ideologies to people and thus, to build new identities of 'citizens.' Interestingly, in sharing these intentions of past policies for public green spaces, the recent introduction of nation gardens differs from those in the 19th and 20th century. Without any emphasis on modernization goals in the western-style, recent official talks described nation gardens as a way to raise Turkey and the government's reputation both nationally and internationally, while also referring to past eras but with other characteristics as the source of "traditions" extending to today. © 2020 The authors.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Current Status of Thrips Parasitoids Ceranisus (hymenoptera: Eulophidae) Species in Turkey Based on Morphology and 28s D2 Rdna(Türkiye Entomoloji Derneği, 2010) Doğanlar, Oğuzhan; Doğanlar, Mikdat; Frary, AnneThe aim of this study was to investigate genetic analysis of the species within genus Ceranisus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) that are interesting groups found in South Eastern Anatolia and Eastern parts of Mediterranean Region of Turkey and to compare with the other thrips-parasitoids between May 2006 and May 2007. Totally, 143 specimens (30 male: 113 female) belonging to Ceranisus genus were collected from 20 locations of 38 different localities in Hatay, Gaziantep, Adiyaman and Sanliurfa provinces. The population was divided into 13 groups based on morphologic characters. Phylogenetic relationships amongst Ceranisus species (Chalcidoidea: Eulophidae) were gathered from DNA sequence data. Fifteen species of thrips chalcid parasitoids were analyzed using one gene, D2 domain of the 28S ribosomal DNA. Among morphologically distinct 13 species/taxonomic groups, 3 of them identified as new species according to the genetical analysis. Four of the other species occurred in C. nr. lepidotus group while 5 of C. nr. bozovaensis consisted of two groups. To conclude 3 new species of Ceranisus and 3 different groups that may yield new species were determined in Turkish Ceranisus population.Article Citation - Scopus: 10Exergy Analysis and Performance Evaluation of Kizildere Geothermal Power Plant, Turkey(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2004) Yıldırım, Eda Didem; Gökçen Akkurt, Gülden; Gökçen, GüldenConventional geothermal power plants (GPP) differ from fossil-fuel power plants (FFPP) in many ways. The most specific ones are GPPs, are not cyclic plants and the working fluid is not pure steam. Geothermal steam contains non-condensable gases (NCG) which degrade power plant efficiency. This discrepancy leads to two considerations in energy and exergy analysis of GPPs. One is that the amount of NCGs in the steam cannot be omitted during the calculations; the other is that the dead state composition varies throughout the process. In this work, energy and exergy analysis is conducted to assess the performance of Kizildere GPP under both considerations. The net second law efficiencies of the plant based on reservoir and wellhead exergy are 24.3 and 27.2% respectively. Both indicate that the plant performance is low comparing with the other single-flash GPPs and FFPPs. The losses are mainly associated with high NCG content and low steam fraction of the fluid.
