Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 8Crystallization and Additional Oxide Interlayers Improve the Tribocorrosion Resistance of Tio2 Nanotubular Surfaces Formed on Ti6al4v(Elsevier, 2023) Çaha, İhsan; Türü, İrem Cemre; Erdoğan, Ece; Pinto, Ana Maria Pires; Cansever, Nurhan; Deepak, Francis Leonard; Toptan, Fatih; Alves, Alexandra C.TiO2-based nanotubular surfaces have promising properties for various industrial applications, such as solar cells, fuel cells, photocatalysis, energy storage, gas sensors, and biomedical applications. However, they have very limited use in real applications, and one of the major limiting factors is the weak adhesion of nanotubular surfaces to the substrate. In this study, nanotubular surfaces are formed on Ti6Al4V alloy by anodic treatment followed by a heat treatment at 500 °C for 3 h under an open atmosphere. Microstructural investigations revealed self-organized nanotubes grown on both ? and ? phases. High-resolution TEM/STEM analysis showed crystallization of the nanotubular layer and formation of additional oxide interlayers resulting in a drastic improvement in tribocorrosion resistance. These findings indicated that a simple heat treatment can significantly alter the properties of nanotubular layers and can widen their usage mainly for load-bearing implant applications in corrosive environments. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 9Polymer-derived ceramic molten metal filters(Springer, 2022) Dizdar, Kerem Can; Kulkarni, Apoorv; Dışpınar, Derya; Soraru, Gian Domenico; Ahmetoğlu, Çekdar Vakıf; Semerci, TuğçeThis paper reports the synthesis and the performance of polymer-derived ceramic filters for molten metal filtration. Two different filter types were studied: foam filters produced from flexible polyurethane (PU) foams and additive manufacturing (AM) filters produced from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) cellular structure, and the results from all filter types were compared with that of the commercially used SiC foam filters. In both cases, the urethane-based polymeric template was impregnated with the preceramic solution, followed by pyrolysis. The produced ceramic components were then used to filter a molten Al alloy (A357), and the resulting Al samples were characterized for their mechanical properties. When filters were used, more reproducible and reliable mechanical properties were achieved compared to the samples obtained without any filtration. Among the different filters tested, the foam filters demonstrated better performance in comparison with the AM ceramic filters due probably to the three-dimensional interconnected porosity compared with the unidirectional cellular structure of the AM ceramic filters.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Determination of Aluminum Oxide Thickness on the Annealed Surface of 8000 Series Aluminum Foil by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(Springer, 2017) İnanç Uçar, Özlem; Ekin Meşe, Ayten; Birbaşar, Onur; Dündar, Murat; Özdemir, DurmuşAluminum foil produced with prescribed thermomechanical processing route develop oxide film. Alloy chemistry and annealing practices, particularly its duration and exposed temperature, determine the characteristics of the oxide film. The magnitude and characteristics of the oxide film may impair surface features leading to serious problems in some applications, such as coating, printing and in some severe cases failure in formability. Therefore, it is important for the rolling industry to be able to monitor the oxide formation on the foil products and quantify its thickness. Well known methods to measure an oxide thickness that is in the order of nanometer, require meticulous sample preparation techniques, long duration for measurements and sophisticated equipment. However, in this study, a simple and rapid grazing angle attenuated total reflectance infrared (GA-ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic method combined with chemometrics multivariate calibration has been developed for the oxide thickness determination which is validated with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). 3000 and 8000 series aluminum foil materials which were produced by twin roll casting technique were used in this study. Foil samples were annealed at various different temperatures and annealing times in a laboratory scale furnace. Immediately after collecting GA-ATR-FTIR spectra, the 3000 series alloy samples were sent to a laboratory where XPS reference oxide thickness measurements had been performed. Partial Least Squares (PLS) method was used to develop a multivariate calibration model based on FTIR spectra and XPS reference oxide thickness values in order to predict the aluminum oxide thickness. The correlation coefficient of XPS reference oxide thickness values versus grazing angle ATR-FTIR based PLS predicted values was found as 0.9903 the standard error of cross validation (SECV) was found to be 0.29 nm in range of 4.9–14.0 nm for Al2O3. In addition, the standard error of prediction (SEP) for the validation set was 0.24 nm with the model generated with three principal components (PCs). © The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society 2017.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 26Thixoforming of A356/Sic and A356/Tib2 Nanocomposites Fabricated by a Combination of Green Compact Nanoparticle Incorporation and Ultrasonic Treatment of the Melted Compact(Springer Verlag, 2014) Kandemir, Sinan; Atkinson, Helen V.; Weston, David P.; Hainsworth, Sarah V.Thixoforming is a type of semi-solid processing which is based on forming metals in the semi-solid state rather than fully liquid or solid state. There have been no reports of the thixoforming of nanocomposites in the literature. The incorporation of ceramic nanoparticles into liquid metals is a challenging task for the fabrication of metal matrix nanocomposites due to their large surface-to-volume ratio and poor wettability. Previous research work by a number of workers has highlighted the challenges with the incorporation of nanoparticles into liquid aluminum alloy. In the present study, SiC and TiB2 nanoparticles with an average diameter between 20 and 30 nm were firstly incorporated into green compacts by a powder forming route, and then the compacts were melted and treated ultrasonically. The microstructural studies reveal that the engulfment and relatively effective distribution of the nanoparticles into the melt were achieved. The hardness was considerably improved with only 0.8 wt pct addition of the nanoparticles. The nanocomposites were successfully thixoformed at a solid fraction between 0.65 and 0.70. The microstructures, hardness, and tensile mechanical properties of the thixoformed nanocomposites were investigated and compared with those of the as-received A356 and thixoformed A356 alloys. The tensile properties of the thixoformed nanocomposites were significantly enhanced compared to thixoformed A356 alloy without reinforcement, indicating the strengthening effects of the nanoparticles.Article Citation - WoS: 70Citation - Scopus: 84Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Evaluation of Aa5013 Aluminum Alloy Treated in the Semi-Solid State by Sima Process(Elsevier Ltd., 2004) Saklakoğlu, Nurşen; Saklakoğlu, İbrahim Etem; Tanoğlu, Metin; Öztaş, Özgü; Çubukcuoğlu, ÖnderThe microstructure and mechanical properties of AA5013 aluminum alloys prepared by strain-induced melt activation (SIMA) process were studied to investigate the effects of cold working and heat treatment conditions. The specimens subjected to deformation ratios of 30 and 50% and various heat treatment time and temperature regimes were characterized in the present study. The results revealed that for the desired microstructure of the alloy, the optimum heat treatment temperature and time were 650°C and 60min, respectively, for both deformation ratios. However, the specimens with 50% cold working exhibited more brittle behavior while they contain finer grains with uniform distribution along the cross-sections as compared to 30% cold working.
