Effect of Fomes Fomentarius Cultivation Conditions on Its Adsorption Performance for Anionic and Cationic Dyes
(American Chemical Society, 2022) Henning, Laura M.; Simon, Ulla; Abdullayev, Amanmyrat; Schmidt, Bertram; Pohl, Carsten; Nunez Guitar, Tamara; Ahmetoğlu, Çekdar Vakıf; Meyer, Vera; Bekheet, Maged F.; Gurlo, Aleksander
Lab-cultivated mycelia of Fomes fomentarius (FF), grown on a solid lignocellulose medium (FF-SM) and a liquid glucose medium (FF-LM), and naturally grown fruiting bodies (FF-FB) were studied as biosorbents for the removal of organic dyes methylene blue and Congo red (CR). Both the chemical and microstructural differences were revealed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential analysis, and scanning electron microscopy, illuminating the superiority of FF-LM and FF-SM over FF-FB in dye adsorption. The adsorption process of CR on FF-LM and FF-SM is best described by the Redlich-Peterson model with β constants close to 1, that is, approaching the monolayer Langmuir model, which reach maximum adsorption capacities of 48.8 and 13.4 mg g-1, respectively, in neutral solutions. Adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order model where chemisorption is the rate-controlling step. While the desorption efficiencies were low, adsorption performances were preserved and even enhanced under simulated dye effluent conditions. The results suggest that F. fomentarius can be considered an attractive biosorbent in industrial wastewater treatment and that its cultivation conditions can be specifically tailored to tune its cell wall composition and adsorption performance.

Incorporation of Iron Nanoparticles Into Clinoptilolite and Its Application for the Removal of Cationic and Anionic Dyes
(Korean Society of Industrial Engineering Chemistry, 2015) Nairat, Muath; Shahwan, Talal; Eroğlu, Ahmet Emin; Fuchs, Harald
This study reports the preparation of composite sorbents of iron nanoparticles (nZVI) and clinoptilolite at various iron/clinoptilolite ratios. The composites were characterized using various characterization techniques. The material was used for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) as model cationic and anionic dyes. The experiments investigated the effects of time, loading, initial pH, reusability, and temperature on the removal process. According to the results, Cl-nZVI showed fast and quantitative removal over a wide range of concentrations. The removal process was endothermic in nature, and the composite demonstrated reusability for several trials.

Polarized Absorption Spectra of Highly Oriented Two-Dimensional Aggregates of Tetrachlorobenzimidazolocarbocyanine in Thin Films
(Elsevier Ltd., 2008) Özçelik, Serdar; Gülen, Demet
Reaching a control on the mesoscopic morphology and internal molecular arrangement of cyanine aggregates is an important step for realization of devices with tailor-made optical properties. Despite a wealth of research, understanding of the relationship between molecular organization, excitonic states and dynamics of aggregates is still preliminary. To this end, we have employed polarized absorption spectroscopy to investigate the relationship between internal molecular organization and excitonic states of J-aggregates in 1,1′,3,3′tetraethyl-5,5′,6,6′-tetrachlorobenzimidazolocarbocyanine (TTBC) thin films in poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA). Angular dependence of the UV-vis spectra has been measured at 11 different orientations between the electric field polarization and the macroscopic alignment axis. Aggregate spectral response consisted of an asymmetrically split Davydov pair of bands exhibiting opposite polarization: an H-band (505 nm, Lorentzian-like, polarized along the macroscopic film axis) and a J-band (594 nm, one-dimensional J-aggregate like band shape, polarized perpendicular to the macroscopic film axis). The polarized absorption observations were found to be consistent with a herringbone model for which the internal molecular arrangement, the excited state structure and dynamics have recently been detailed by us upon interpretation of isotropic absorption data in ionic aqueous solution.

Dye Adsorption Behavior of Luffa Cylindrica Fibers
(Elsevier Ltd., 2008) Demir, Hasan; Top, Ayben; Balköse, Devrim; Ülkü, Semra
Using natural Luffa cylindrica fibers as adsorbent removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions at different temperatures and dye concentrations was investigated in this study. Thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption were also investigated. The adsorption isotherms could be well defined with Langmuir model instead of Freundlich model. The thermodynamic parameters of methylene blue (MB) adsorption indicated that the adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous. The average MB adsorption capacity was found out as 49 mg/g and average BET surface area of fibers was calculated as 123 m2/g.

Flexible Poly(vinyl Chloride)-Zeolite Composites for Dye Adsorption From Aqueous Solutions
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 1996) Balköse, Devrim; Ulutan, Sevgi; Çakıcıoğlu Özkan, Seher Fehime; Ülkü, Semra; Köktürk, Uğur
Flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites having natural zeolite clinoptillolite were prepared by plastisol-plastigel technology. Adsoption of methylene blue on each raw material and on composites was studied both from an equilibrium and a rate approach. It was observed that the adsorption capacity of zeolite decreased when it was embedded in composites. The equilibrium uptake of methylene blue increased with an increasing zeolite fraction in composites. Methylene blue was adsorbed from a 0.02 g·cm-3 aqueous solution slowly, but was nearly adsorbed completely with a composite having a 0.3 volume fraction of zeolite. The effective diffusion coefficient of methylene blue in composites was of the order of 10-13 m2·s-1 and decreased with increasing filler fraction.
