    Quantitative Detection of Low Energy Impact Damage in a Sandwich Composite Wing

    This work describes damage detection in a foam core composite wing (1320 mm × 152.4 mm × 13.4 mm) following a series of low energy impacts. Thirteen impacts (6-8 J deposited energy) were applied at adjacent locations approximately 1/4 of the way out from the wing center. Following every one or two impacts, the wing was tested using static tip deflection and dynamic vibrational excitation. Static and dynamic strains were measured using eight fiber Bragg grating sensors. Dynamic acceleration was also monitored using three conventional accelerometers. The estimated bicoherence was used to detect the presence of damage-induced non-linearity in time-series data recorded from each sensor. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed for each sensor based on 15 or more dynamic measurements made for each damage case. The ROC curves provide a quantitative, statistical approach to evaluating the damage detection capabilities of the various sensors.

    Analytical Investigation of a Novel Interrogation Approach of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors Using Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry

    This work presents a novel approach in interrogating Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) of cascaded identical FBGs using Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometer (OFDR). The fundamentals of both polarisation properties of uniform FBGs and polarisation-sensitive OFDR are explained and the benefits of this novel approach in measuring transversal load are discussed. The numerical programs computing the spectral evolution of PDL of the FBGs in the array as a function of grating parameters (grating length and birefringence) are presented. Our simulation results show an excellent agreement with the previously reported simulation (and experimental) results in the literature obtained on a single FBG by using classical state-of-the-art measurement techniques. As an envisaged application, the proposed system shows the feasibility of measuring the residual stresses during manufacturing process of composite materials which is not straightforward by amplitude spectrum measurements and/or considering only the axial strains. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.     We experimentally demonstrated a fast infrared (IR) radiation sensor. It is capable of measuring IR radiation independently from the environmental temperature fluctuations. Experimental work shows that this IR detection prototype have strong conveniences (fast response and reliability in harsh environment) compared to previous detectors which makes it a very good option for early fire detection systems. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.     A Quasi-Distributed Temperature Sensor Interrogated by Optical Frequency-Domain Reflectometer

    This paper presents the analysis of a quasi-distributed sensor based on the concatenation of identical low-reflective fiber Bragg gratings. We experimentally demonstrated a temperature sensor using ten cascaded gratings which are interrogated by an optical frequency domain reflectometer. Repeatability measurements highlighted a standard deviation on the measured temperature smaller than 1.5 °C. A complete demonstration of mathematical formulas which are used to obtain the temperature information is also provided. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

    We present the analysis of a quasi-distributed fiber sensor based on the concatenation of identical low-reflective fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) taking into account both multireflection and spectral-shadowing crosstalks. This allows obtaining more realistic values of the design parameters such as the maximum number of sensing points, the reflectivity of the gratings, and the distance between the sensing points. © 2001-2012 IEEE.
