    Analysis and Application of Advanced Control Strategies To a Heating Element Nonlinear Model

    This paper presents the design of different control strategies applied to a heating element nonlinear model. The description of this heating element was obtained exploiting a data-driven and physically meaningful nonlinear continuous-time model, which represents a test-bed used in passive air conditioning for sustainable housing applications. This model has low complexity while achieving high simulation performance. The physical meaningfulness of the model provides an enhanced insight into the performance and functionality of the system. In return, this information can be used during the system simulation and improved model- based and data-driven control designs for tight temperature regulation. The main purpose of this study is thus to give several examples of viable and practical designs of control schemes with application to this heating element model. Moreover, extensive simulations and Monte- Carlo analysis are the tools for assessing experimentally the main features of the proposed control schemes, in the presence of modelling and measurement errors. These developed control methods are also compared in order to evaluate advantages and drawbacks of the considered solutions. Finally, the exploited simulation tools can serve to highlight the potential application of the proposed control strategies to real air conditioning systems.

    Electronic Structure and Correlations of Vitamin B12 Studied Within the Haldane-Anderson Impurity Model

    We study the electronic structure and correlations of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamine) by using theframework of the multi-orbital single-impurity Haldane-Anderson model of atransition-metal impurity in a semiconductor host. The parameters of the effectiveHaldane-Anderson model are obtained within the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation. Thequantum Monte Carlo (QMC) technique is then used to calculate the one-electron andmagnetic correlation functions of this effective model. We observe that new states forminside the semiconductor gap found by HF due to the intra-orbital Coulomb interaction atthe impurity 3d orbitals. In particular, the lowest unoccupiedstates correspond to an impurity bound state, which consists of states from mainly the CNaxial ligand and the corrin ring as well as the Co eg-like orbitals. We alsoobserve that the Co (3d) orbitals can develop antiferromagneticcorrelations with the surrounding atoms depending on the filling of the impurity boundstates. In addition, we make comparisons of the HF+QMC data with the density functionaltheory calculations. We also discuss the photoabsorption spectrum of cyanocobalamine.

    Forward Energy Flow, Central Charged-Particle Multiplicities, and Pseudorapidity Gaps in W and Z Boson Events From Pp Collisions at ?s = 7 Tev

    A study of forward energy flow and central charged-particle multiplicity in events with W and Z bosons decaying into leptons is presented. The analysis uses a sample of 7 TeV pp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed forward energy depositions, their correlations, and the central charged-particle multiplicities are not well described by the available non-diffractive soft-hadron production models. A study of about 300 events with no significant energy deposited in one of the forward calorimeters, corresponding to a pseudorapidity gap of at least 1. 9 units, is also presented. An indication for a diffractive component in these events comes from the observation that the majority of the charged leptons from the W(Z) decays are found in the hemisphere opposite to the gap. When fitting the signed lepton pseudorapidity distribution of these events with predicted distributions from an admixture of diffractive (pompyt) and non-diffractive (pythia) Monte Carlo simulations, the diffractive component is determined to be (50. 0 ± 9. 3 (stat.) ± 5. 2 (syst.))%. © 2012 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    Quantum Renormalization of the Spin Hall Effect

    By quantum Monte Carlo simulation of a realistic multiorbital Anderson impurity model, we study the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of an Fe impurity in Au host metal. We show, for the first time, that the SOI is strongly renormalized by the quantum spin fluctuation. Based on this mechanism, we can explain why the gigantic spin Hall effect in Au with Fe impurities was observed in recent experiments, while it is not visible in the anomalous Hall effect. In addition, we show that the SOI is strongly renormalized by the Coulomb correlation U. Based on this picture, we can explain past discrepancies in the calculated orbital angular momenta for an Fe impurity in an Au host. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

    Alignment of the Cms Muon System With Cosmic-Ray and Beam-Halo Muons

    The CMS muon system has been aligned using cosmic-ray muons collected in 2008 and beam-halo muons from the 2008 LHC circulating beam tests. After alignment, the resolution of the most sensitive coordinate is 80 microns for the relative positions of superlayers in the same barrel chamber and 270 microns for the relative positions of endcap chambers in the same ring structure. The resolution on the position of the central barrel chambers relative to the tracker is comprised between two extreme estimates, 200 and 700 microns, provided by two complementary studies. With minor modifications, the alignment procedures can be applied using muons from LHC collisions, leading to additional significant improvements.
