Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 17Spectrophotometric Characterization of Plasticizer Migration in Poly(vinyl Chloride)-Based Artificial Leather(Elsevier Ltd., 2021) Akkuş Altındağ, İffet; Akdoğan, YaşarPlasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most commonly used material in the manufacture of artificial leather because of its flexibility, high durability and low cost. While hundreds of plasticizers have been produced to obtain PVC films and artificial leathers, it is important to choose the correct plasticizer to produce the desired products. Therefore, here five non-phthalate type plasticizers with three levels (40 phr, 60 phr and 80 phr); trioctyl trimelliate (TOTM), tributyl trimelliate (TBTM), dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP), dioctyl adipate (DOA) and dioctyl succinate (BIO) were used to prepare plasticized PVC films. They were studied in terms of their compabilities with PVC polymer chains, and their effects on mechanical properties of PVC films. Although, linear plasticizers e.g. BIO and DOA have higher compabilities with PVC, a branched plasticizer e.g. TOTM showed higher mechanical properties. Moreover, a new spectrophotometric method for determination of plasticizer migration from PVC polymer matrix to the surface of artifical leather was developed. According to lightness change on the surface of PVC artifical leather before and after heat treatment at 70 °C, the migration rates of used plasticizers increase in this order: TOTM < TBTM < DOTP < BIO < DOA. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 9Preparation and Characterization of Flexible Polyvinylchloride-Copper Composite Films(Smithers Rapra Technology, 2013) Kurt, Emrah; Özçelik, Cenk Yağız; Yetgin, Senem; Özmıhçı Ömürlü, Filiz; Balköse, DevrimFlexible PVC films are statically charged due to their low electrical conductivity. This creates fire threat during its handling. Conductive materials are added to films to prevent this. In the present study it was aimed to prepare PVC- copper composite films by sol gel technique and characterize the prepared films. It was aimed to increase the electrical conductivity of the films by adding copper powder. However, the copper particles settled down to bottom instead of forming a conductive network that covers the whole cross section. Thus at the film crosssection a plastic upper phase and a copper rich lower phase were present. The film did not conduct electricity due to this uneven distribution. The minimum volumetric and surface resistivities of the films were at the order of 109 ohm-cm and 1010 ohm square respectively.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Flexible Pvc-Silica Composites as an Adsorptive Material for Water Soluble Dyes(Smithers Rapra Technology, 2013) Ulutan, Sevgi; Yetgin, Senem; Balköse, DevrimMethylene Blue (MB) adsorption studies were performed on flexible Polyvinyl Chloride/Silica composites which were obtained by using plastisol-plastigel technology. Change of MB concentration in aqueous phase as the adsorption process advanced was followed by using visible spectroscopy. The diffusion of MB through the composites exhibited non-Fickian behavior with a diffusivity of 10-11 m2s-1. Making use of such PVC-silica composite sheets as column packing, the packing time will be reduced and the surface available for diffusion will be increased. © 2013 Smithers Rapra Technology.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 8Water Vapour Adsorption on Organic and Inorganic Polymers(Springer Verlag, 2003) Balköse, Devrim; Özkan, Fehime; Ulutan, Sevgi; Ülkü, SemraWater vapour adsorption on polymers affects their processing behaviour and useful properties. Water vapour adsorption on organic polymers, silk, Nylon 6 fibres in undrawn and permanent set forms, polyester micro fibres, plasticised PVC films with 60 phr dioctylphthalate (OOP) and inorganic polymer sepiolite particles were investigated in this study. The materials were examined using the BET equation. The surface areas of silk, cast Nylon 6 and muss Nylon 6 were determined as 108, 46 and 23 m2 g-1, respectively. Sepiolite did not fit BET equation. Polyester and PVC adsorbed very small amounts of moisture.
