Airborne pathogen transmission via droplets is an important mode for infectious diseases. In this paper, the spreading mechanism of infectious diseases by airborne pathogen transmission between two humans is modeled with a molecular communication perspective. An end-to-end system model which considers the pathogen-laden cough/sneeze droplets as the input and the infection state of the human as the output is proposed. This model uses the gravity, initial velocity and buoyancy for the propagation of droplets and a receiver model which considers the central part of the human face as the reception interface is proposed. Furthermore, the probability of infection for an uninfected human is derived by modeling the number of propagating droplets as a random process. The numerical results reveal that exposure time affects the probability of infection. In addition, the social distance for a horizontal cough should be at least 1.7 m and the safe coughing angle of a coughing human to infect less people should be less than -25 degrees.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 21Short-Wave Ultraviolet Light Inactivation of Pathogens in Fruit Juices(Elsevier, 2018) Baysal, Ayşe HandanFruit juice processing techniques are continuously developing to conform to modern consumer demands for safe, nutritious, tasty, natural, and fresh-like products. Short-wave ultraviolet (UV-C) light has been proven to be a suitable alternative processing method because of its positive consumer image and low processing cost. The use of UV-C light at 253.7. nm for food processing is safe and has been approved as an alternative treatment to reduce pathogens and other microorganisms in the production, processing, and handling of foods. The bactericidal mechanism of UV-C is based on the absorption of UV-C light by microbial DNA or RNA structures and the formation of pyrimidine dimers, preventing replication, making pathogens inactive and unable to cause infection. Fruit juices have a range of optical and physical properties and diverse chemical compositions that influence UV-C efficacy. Thus, this chapter describes the effect of UV-C light applications on the inactivation of pathogens in fruit juice and critical factors to ensure efficient treatment. © 2018 Elsevier Inc. The resistance enhancement of Citrus susceptible to the pathogen infection depends on the availability of a valid test for disease assessment. However, the resistance analysis tests used give controversial results. In this paper, we propose a new mathematical model to conduct a rapid and efficient resistance screening test. This model has the advantage to give a strict evaluation of the resistance and not a relative estimation as in the usual tests. The results obtained by this model are in concordance with those observed in the orchards.
