Book Part Telemedicine Applications for Pandemic Diseases, With a Focus on Covid-19(Elsevier, 2021) Tarim,E.A.; Karakuzu,B.; Oksuz,C.; Tekin,H.C.Dating back to the development of modern medicine, pandemic and epidemic diseases, such as bubonic plague, smallpox, the plague of Justinian, and the Antonine Plague, have caused massive damage to the human race. For instance, more than 200 million people are estimated to have died due to Black Death (bubonic plague) alone. This situation has not changed in near history either. Diseases such as influenza, HIV/AIDS, severe acute respiratory syndrome, Ebola, Middle East respiratory syndrome, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as today, have emerged and threatened the modern human life. The common feature of these diseases can be listed as having a high risk of infection and transmission, rapidly spreading to large areas, and having high mortality rates and causing permanent damage to the body because of the low immunity profile of the exposed population. If the number of cases increases rapidly for these diseases, the capacity of healthcare services can be exceeded and healthcare services can be threatened as well. These characteristics of pandemic diseases force the authorities to take extraordinary precautions such as isolation and quarantine to reduce the risk of infection. However, these applications can make it difficult to provide proper health services to patients. The development of information technologies provides patients an easy and remote access to healthcare services via telemedicine applications. Telemedicine is used for diagnosis and treatment of diseases by following the same practices used in clinics. It also provides care givers a real-time and remote monitoring of their patients, which can be beneficial in terms of reducing the risk of infections and maintaining healthcare services during a pandemic. Authorities can also use these telemedicine applications to track infected patients and get necessary precaution to minimize the infection risk. This chapter introduces the latest telemedicine applications for epidemic and pandemic diseases, especially for COVID-19. These potential applications could improve and transform the current practices for pandemic disease management. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 10The Effect of Additional Telerounding on Postoperative Outcomes, Patient and Surgeon Satisfaction Rates in the Patients Who Underwent Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy(Iniestares, S.A., 2019) Aydoğdu, Özgü; Şen, Volkan; Yarımoğlu, Serkan; Aydoğdu, Canan; Bozkurt, İbrahim H.; Yonguç, TarıkINTRODUCTION: We wanted to investigate the potential effect of additional telerounding system on postoperative outcomes, patient and surgeon satisfaction rates in the patients who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). METHODS: Eighty patients who underwent PNL were included in the study. The patients were randomly divided to two groups. Group 1 included 40 patients who were followed-up with standard rounds and group 2 included 40 patients who were followed-up with telerounding in addition to standard rounds. Patient and surgeon satisfaction rates were assessed with a visual analog scale (VAS) where 0 point represents very dissatisfied and 100 points very satisfied. RESULTS: Mean time of preoperative telerounding visit was 3.65 +/- 0.59 (2-4) minutes. Mean time of telerounding visits on the postoperative 1st and 2nd days was 3.80 +/- 0.62 and 2.9 +/- 0.91 minutes respectively. The VAS score evaluating the surgeon's satisfaction rate for telerounding was 91 +/- 11.2 and patients expressed a high level of satisfaction with 72.5%. CONCLUSION: The use of additional telerounding in urological patient care provides high satisfaction rates for both the patients and the surgeon. However the findings of the present study don't underestimate the importance of personal surgeon-patient interaction.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 10Performance Evaluation of Webrtc-Based Online Consultation Platform(Türkiye Klinikleri Journal of Medical Sciences, 2019) Tarım, Ergün Alperay; Tekin, Hüseyin CumhurInformation technologies give patients the opportunity to communicate with medical professionals remotely. Telemedicine uses these technologies to provide advanced healthcare and medical services. We present a medical online consultation application based on Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) technology enabling chat, audio, and video calls. Communication architecture and protocols of the application are explained in detail. Additionally, the user interface of the application is shown via performed calls. The application is tested and evaluated on different network connections (3G, 4G, local, and DSL) and different browsers and mobile operating systems (Android, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, iOS, Opera, Safari). During calls, communication quality parameters such as round-trip time (RTT) and packet loss, obtained via the WebRTC application programming interface, are analyzed. 3G, 4G, and local connections show low packet losses (<1%). Packet losses are high (>1%) in Android, Chrome, iOS, Opera, and Safari for DSL connection, but RTT values are low (<100 ms) in all different conditions excluding iOS. In the presented application, RTT and packet loss remain lower than 100 ms and 1%, respectively, in various scenarios, indicating good communication quality. RTT and packet loss are related to total time and hang time parameters, which describe the necessary time to establish and to end a call. It is shown that communication quality of the application can simply be measured by analyzing the total time parameter. This enables predictable information for communication quality for WebRTC-based applications without continuously monitoring RTT and packet loss for the first time.Article Citation - Scopus: 2An Overview of Telemedicine in Turkey(Trade Science Inc., 2013) Aydoğdu, Canan; Aydoğdu, ÖzgüThis study focuses on telemedicine in Turkey by the use of the Internet, where the potential for telemedicine of Turkey, telemedicine initiatives conducted in Turkey until now are examined first. The types of applications that the Internet can support in consumer health, clinical care, financial and administrative transactions, public health, health professional education in Turkey are investigated next. Finally, a discussion on the technical, legal and bureaucratic obstacles for realizing telemedicine in Turkey over the Internet and suggestions on how to overcome these obstacles are presented. © 2013 Trade Science Inc.-INDIA.
