    Bioavailability Assessment of the Novel Gsh-Functionalized Feb Nanoparticles Via Oxidative Stress and Trace Element Metabolism in Vitro: Promising Tools for Biomedical Applications

    Iron-based magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted significant attention in biomedical research, particularly for applications such as cancer detection and therapy, targeted drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and hyperthermia. This study focuses on the synthesis and glutathione (GSH) functionalization of iron boride (FeB) nanoparticles (NPs) for prospective biomedical use. The GSH-functionalized FeB NPs (FeB@GSH) demonstrated ferromagnetic behavior, with a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 45.8 emu/g and low coercivity (Hc = 1000 Oe), indicating desirable magnetic properties for biomedical applications. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the FeB@GSH revealed well-dispersed nanoparticles with diameters smaller than 30 nm. Comprehensive nanotoxicity and biocompatibility assessments were performed using various healthy and cancer cell lines, including 293 T, HeLa, 3T3, MCF7, HCT116, and CFPAC-1. Cytotoxicity assays were conducted on FeB@GSH-treated cells over a dose range of 0-300 mu g/mL during 24-h incubations. Results indicated no significant differences in cell viability between treated and untreated control groups, confirming the biocompatibility of FeB@GSH. Further nanotoxicity evaluations were carried out on 3T3, 293 T, and CFPAC-1 cell lines, focusing on oxidative stress markers and cellular metabolism by measuring antioxidant enzyme activity. Additionally, ion release and mineral metabolism were assessed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), revealing no notable variations between the treated and control groups. These findings suggest that FeB@GSH NPs exhibit excellent biocompatibility, making them promising candidates for diverse biomedical applications, including medical imaging, drug delivery systems, and therapeutic interventions.

    Enrichment of Trace Element Concentrations in Coal and Its Combustion Residues and Their Potential Environmental and Human Health Impact: Can Coal Basin, Nw Turkey as a Case Study

    In this study, the variation of trace element concentrations ( total of 48 trace elements including rare earth elements) in coal, coal ash and fly ash were examined and compared with coal Clarke values. Results showed that the average concentrations of trace elements including As, B, Cu, Ce, Co, Cs, Gd, Hf, La, Lu, Mo, Nd, Nb, Pr, Pb, Sc, Sm, Ta, Tb, Th, U, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn and Zr in the Can Basin coals are higher than their respective Clarke values for world low-rank coals. The elements As, Cu, Co, Cs, Mo, Nb, Sc, Pb, Pr, Th, U, V, Zn and Zr are enriched in coal ashes, whereas As, Co, Nb, Sc, U and V are enriched in fly ashes. Among the elements, maximum enrichment in coal was observed for As, with the average concentration of 253.5 ppm As in the Can Basin coals, while the coal Clarke value is 14 ppm and world average value is 8.3 ppm. From the ecotoxicological point of view, combustion residues formed by indoor combustion of coal and/or in thermal power plants may be a hazard to the environment and to aquatic and terrestrial life including human beings, particularly As, trace elements and released radioactive elements.

    A Quality Assessment of Public Water Fountains and Relation To Human Health: a Case Study From Yozgat, Turkey

    Public fountains are very common and everyday people appreciate the benefits a water fountain can bring. However, consumption of public fountain water in some country has decreased because of growing concerns that constituents in fountain water may have adverse effects on health. A few studies have examined the safety of public fountains, proposing only limited evidence of fountain-related health issues in Turkey. Most of these public fountains are sourced from natural springs in Turkey. In this study, a 177 fountain water and 32 rock samples were analysed for source and quality of water. The geology of the region has the direct impact on the quality of the public fountain water. The results indicate that the level of some elements exceeded the limit values determined by WHO and US.EPA. The most striking high values were observed for iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As) and bromine (Br) concentrations.

    X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopic Determination of Heavy Metals and Trace Elements in Aerial Parts of Origanum Sipyleum L From Turkey

    Purpose: To determine the heavy metal and trace element composition of the powdered aerial parts of Origanum sipyleum L. and its water extract. Methods: The heavy metal and trace elements content of the powdered plant material and 2% aqueous extract were evaluated by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy with silicon drift detector SDD at a resolution of 145 eV and 10,000 pulses. The process conditions were 0.1 g sample weight, process time of 300 s at a voltage of 25 kV and 50 kV, and at a current of 0.5 and 1.0 mA under helium atmosphere. Results: The major elements, K, Ca and Na, known as macronutrients, constituted 11990, 10490 and 970 ppm of the powdered drug and 8910, 2991 and 810 ppm of the water extract, respectively. Among other constituents, arsenic, lead and uranium levels were < 1, 2.1 and < 3 ppm, respectively, in the powdered material while in the aqueous extract, the levels were < 1, < 2 and 200 ppm, respectively. Conclusion: O. sipyleum is a potential source of macro- and micronutrients from which useful food additives and health supplements can be derived.

    Distribution of Some Elements in Veronica Scutellata L. From Bolu, Turkey: Soil-Plant Interactions

    Veronica scutellata L. occurs in moist and wet habitats, such as ponds, marshes and other wetlands. This study was conducted on this species to examine its mineral element uptake status in terms of interactions between soil and plant. Experimental materials were taken from the Southern coast of Black Sea at coordinates 40°36'N and 31°16'E at an altitude of 1400 m above sea level from Bolu - Turkey; using standard methods and plant (root, stem and leaf parts) and soil mineral element measurements (Al, B, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni and Zn) were done. During the study, ICP-OES was employed for the measurement of mineral elements. It was observed that considerable amounts of B, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Na and Zn are accumulated by the plant.
