    Geleneksel Konutlarda Günışığı Aydınlığının Değerlendirilmesi: Kula Geleneksel Konutlarında Başoda

    Daylighting is one of the main factors among the features that determine the original space qualities in traditional houses. Illuminating the space with daylight also determines its ambience. Daylighting criteria should be considered among the features to be preserved in the usage decisions. In traditional dwellings in Anatolia, the main room is the most lavish room, which has projections and is surrounded by windows on three sides. Therefore, in the buildings which are conserved for reuse, the main room should maintain its original daylighting features. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the maintenance of daylighting features in the restoration decisions of traditional dwellings. Within the scope of the study, daylight performance of the main rooms of Kaçiklar and Zabunlar Houses selected in Kula, Manisa was evaluated. The daylight illuminance of the main rooms was measured during the four seasons; by calculating the ratio of the window area to the floor and wall areas, reflectance of surface materials and normal-normal transmittance of window glass were calculated. Results showed that daylight illuminance of the main room in Kaçiklar House was not sufficient for all four seasons, while it was in Zabunlar House. As a result, while the restoration decisions are developed, opening the closed window in the main room of Kaçiklar House, cleaning the paint on the top windows and and selecting a light-coloured wall finishing material will increase the reflectance value and will positively affect the daylight illuminance; in Zabunlar House, on the other hand, removing the existing wooden glazing in the sofa in order to increase the daylight provided through the sofa and increasing the reflectance value by choosing a light-coloured wall finishing material will increase the daylight illuminance of the main room.

    Traditional Dwellings of Gölde (i̇ncesu): a Rural Heritage in the Process of Change

    Gölde, officially named İncesu, is a rural settlement located in Aegean Anatolia. Before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923, Gölde hosted both Orthodox Rum and Muslim Turkish communities. Despite out-migration since 1923, traditional life continued in the settlement with a small population that now comprises mostly elderly Turkish people. This paper aims to understand traditional Gölde dwelling units by analysing the influence of daily-life practices, customs, traditions and values through interviews with current locals and the oral testimonies of former Rum inhabitants. A site survey identified 136 traditional dwelling units, 68 of which are still inhabited. Site reconstruction analysis revealed the original condition of 90 dwelling units. These formed the primary focus of investigation. No major differences were found between houses originally belonging to the Rum and Turkish communities. However, the study identified significant adaptations of the dwelling units in line with changing socio-cultural conditions over time.

    An Architectural Evaluation Method for Conservation of Traditional Dwellings

    Historic urban sites and traditional houses are the most important evidence of the past life style. The conservation of these traditional values in the context of conservation and revitalization of architectural heritage is in a sense the preservation of culture. The main goal of conservation is to enliven cultural properties by evaluating their architectural, historical, environmental, visual and aesthetic characteristics. These evaluation studies, which are essential in the context of conservation plans, are inevitable phases to determine the principles of the plans. This study is aimed to propose a method for the architectural evaluation phase, which is essential before conservation decisions. The proposed method is based on a gradation system. Odunpazari district in Eskişehir/Turkey is determined as the area to test this gradation method. It is proposed that this method explains the systematic way for evaluating architectural features belonging to historic sites whose conservation plans are to be prepared. In the study, traditional buildings are evaluated from the point of their exterior and interior architectural characteristics and classified as different value groups: A, B, C and D. This grouping will be advantageous to conservation decisions. Different technical teams may be organized to be responsible for these various value groups. As a result, a systematic approach for the determination of specialized teams and required equipment will be achieved. Thus, an accurate determination of required time and cost estimates will be realized.
