Article Exploring Women's Visceral Engagement With Electric Appliances in Turkish Kitchens(Springernature, 2025) Emgin, Bahar; Karaosmanoğlu, Defne; Ata, Leyla Bektaş; Karaosmanoglu, Defne; Ata, Leyla Bektas; Emgin, BaharThis paper investigates the narratives and experiences of women regarding cooking with small electric appliances. It intends to offer a novel perspective on gender and technology studies by foregrounding the visceral dimensions of these encounters. Drawing from a larger project on the historical representations and lived experiences of domestic technologies in Turkey, it highlights how the embodied dimensions of cooking shape the ways women perceive, adapt, and integrate technology into their daily lives. This study is based on interviews with twenty-seven women across five cities in Turkey conducted between 2022 and 2024. While small electric appliances are often marketed for convenience and efficiency, we argue that focusing solely on their instrumental benefits neglects the complex and visceral ways women engage with technology. A visceral approach remains an undervalued lens for understanding these interactions, particularly as women's embodied knowledge and relationships to kitchen appliances challenge scholarship that prioritizes progress and efficiency. As active agents, many women resist these technologies, viewing them as misaligned with the embodied knowledge and practices integral to cooking. By reevaluating the relationship between food, gender, and technology, we propose that such disengagement challenges the positivist reliance on science and technology, emphasizing the importance of embodied knowledge and everyday practices in shaping women's interactions with technology.Article On-Site Measurements of Temperature and Humidity Conditions for the Comparison of Urban and Rural Sub-Spaces of Traditional Settlements: Historical City of Muğla, Turkey(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024) Timur,B.A.; Başaran,T.; İpekoğlu,B.One of the significant processes that ensures realistic determination of the energy needs of historical buildings is case-specific definition of their local microclimatic conditions. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to determine differences for the parameters of temperature and humidity in urban and rural sub-settlements of the historical city, Muğla/Turkey. Study method consists of on-site measurements of these variables in sub-settlements for comparisons. As a result, it was identified urban zone shows heat island characteristics with warmer, drier, and more stable conditions; while rural sub-settlement remains cooler, more humid, and more erratic. In parallel, calculated extents of these differences demonstrate the significance and necessity of on-site measurements and consequential microclimatic zoning of historical cities as conservation/planning tools for responding to the thermal needs of architectural heritage. A key application of these processes would be the establishment of local databases of case-specific weather data to be used in thermal simulation assessments. © 2023 Taylor & Francis.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 9Politics of Waiting for Transformation in Protracted Urban Renewal Projects in Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2023) Ay, Deniz; Penpecioglu, MehmetThis paper explores the politics of 'waiting' as a mode of governance in large-scale urban redevelopment projects. In designated renewal areas, residents/landowners are often subject to several episodes of waiting: waiting for the public authority for information on redevelopment visions; waiting for the plans and projects to become public; waiting for the court ruling if they appeal the plans; waiting for demolition upon plan approvals; and, finally, waiting for the constructions to be completed. Given the complexity of actors and institutions involved in the waiting, it becomes a conflictual political process. This prolonged waiting leads to an ongoing temporariness and precarious spaces of urban renewal. The course of waiting affects the reorganization of the city space now and in the future. We analyze two protracted urban renewal projects from Turkey, Fikirtepe in Istanbul and Karabaglar in Izmir, to explore how residents' decade-long waiting for urban change are shaped and how these diverse waiting experiences lead to different outcomes for the progression of the state-imposed urban renewal agendas. While Karabaglar residents have unified around active bottom-up resistance from the beginning to challenge the project-based plans the central government imposed, Fikirtepe residents pursued individual-level negotiations with developers to maximize private returns following the zoning incentives the public authority gave. Despite the socio-spatial similarities between these designated urban renewal project sites, variances in residents' collective waiting strategies have led to different urban politics around project-based urban change.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 24A Gis-Based Fahp and Fedas Analysis Framework for Suitable Site Selection of a Hybrid Offshore Wind and Solar Power Plant(Elsevier B.V., 2023) Karipoğlu, Fatih; Ozturk, S.; Efe, B.This study presents a Geographic Information System (GIS) based suitable site selection methodology for a hybrid system that includes offshore wind and solar PV. The methodology utilizes open source databases about decision criteria and applies this data using GIS to determine suitable sites for offshore wind and solar PV systems. For the assessment of multi-criteria which affect the potential hybrid energy power plants and the determination of the best suitable areas, Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Fuzzy Evaluation based on Distance Average Solution (FEDAS) are used in the study. Results show that technical criteria has the priority weight of 0.60 while the weight of social criteria is about 0.07. Among sub-criteria, the wind speed has the highest priority weight while distance to port and visibility are the highest criteria of priority weight under economic and social main criteria, respectively. Among the alternatives, Area 2 (A-2) is determined as the best alternative for hybrid offshore power plants in the study area. This proposed methodology can be utilized by decision-makers to determine the best suitable locations for hybrid offshore wind and solar PV systems at any location. As a corollary of the Turkish official narrative, which is based on a national security approach, certain explanations were offered in justification of the close relationship, including shared traditional democratic culture and secular character, as well as conducive international atmosphere. According to this construction, Turkey had no option but to align with Israel. On the other hand, while the ‘honeymoon’ was often seen as a foreign policy issue directly affected by the military bureaucracy, negative discourses against Israel in domestic politics, and institutional challenges in the Turkish state structure were often ignored. In this study, we aimed to discuss the possible mechanisms, clinical aspects, and threat of visceralizing L. tropica.MethodsThis study includes seven cases of VL caused by L. tropica.Five patients were male (71%) and four were adults (57%).ResultsAll the VL patients complained of fever and splenomegaly. Fatigue, pancytopenia, and hepatomegaly were present in six patients each (86%), while weight loss and gastrointestinal system (GIS) symptoms were present in 5 patients (71%).ConclusionsIn this study, we have evaluated seven cases of visceralized L. tropica (VLT) in the context of the changing leishmaniasis epidemiology in Turkey. We have evaluated the possible mechanisms of visceralization; inter- and intraspecies genetic exchange with all the old world leishmaniasis agents present in the region, stress induced by inappropriate use of drugs, and possible ongoing adaptation mechanisms of Leishmania spp. The threat posed by VLT is significant as L. tropica is the most widespread and most common cause of leishmaniasis in Turkey. We do not know the vectorial capacity of the sand flies for the transmission of VLT strains or if these strains are in circulation in Turkey. Future studies should be carried out to investigate these issues as the transition of L. tropica from a mild disease-causing agent to a mortal one poses a significant public health concern for Turkey and Europe.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Regional Inflation Persistence in Turkey(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2021) Duran, Hasan Engin; Dindaroğlu, BurakThe purpose of the current study is to investigate the degree of inflation persistence, its geographical variation, sources of cross-regional variation, and presence of geographical/sectoral aggregation bias in national monetary policy. Our data set covers 26 NUTS-2 level Turkish regions and monthly CPI inflation over the period 2003-2019. We first estimate the degree of regional inflation persistence by autoregressive regressions, check its robustness against the presence of structural breaks (by Bai-Perron's algorithm) and nonlinearities (by Markovian Regime Switching regressions). Second, we examine the possibility of geographical and sectoral aggregation bias. Third, we investigate the cross-regional determinants of inflation persistence by panel data analysis, employing hybrid-effects spatial panel regressions. We analyze the direct and indirect effects of the determinants and test for regional spillover effects. Three main results are obtained. First, estimated persistence degrees are heterogeneous across regions. The geographical pattern is empirically robust against structural breaks and nonlinearities. We find that inflation persistence is distributed in a spatially correlated manner. Second, when sectoral and regional aggregation bias is tested, only sectoral aggregation indicates a considerable level of bias. Third, we find that the presence of large firms in the region and a higher share of agricultural output in GDP leads to lower persistence, while an increased share of industrial output, and increased trade volume leads to higher inflation persistence. Moreover, we find spatial spillovers of price variability evident in regression analysis. From a policy standpoint, it is required that structural policy programs are targeted to maintain flexibility in the regions where persistence is high (i.e., providing market entry/exit, institutional quality, policy credibility, stimulation of SMEs). The phylogenetic relationships within the Ceranisus species were explored using nucleotide sequences of the 28S D2 expansion region of the rDNA gene. Bayesian, maximum likelihood, and parsimony inference methods were employed to construct the phylogenetic relationships. Principal component analysis on the Turkish species of Ceranisus, namely antalyacus, menes, bozovaensis, hirsutus, planitianus (a new record for Turkey), pacuvius, and a new species, provided supporting evidence. All known data concerning hosts and geographical distribution are presented. A new species, C. onuri O. Twenty-one Turkish BTV isolates were analyzed phylogenetically, based on genome segment 10 (Seg-10) nucleotide sequences. These analyses were used to explore the epidemiological background of individual isolates from both a regional and global perspective. In the regional analysis, the different BTV strains fell into two groups (Group 1 and Group 2). The Turkish virus isolates were localized in Group 1 which contains two sub-groups. The neighbor-joining analysis revealed that Seg-10 of majority of the Turkish viruses was closely related to certain other virus strains allocated in the eastern lineage. The Seg-10's of two viruses (TR25 and TR26) were more closely related to strains isolated in the Asia-Australia region. These strains belong to the 'eastern' topotype identified by [Maan, S., Maan, N.S., Ross-Smith, N., Batten, C.A., Shaw, A.E., Anthony, S.J., Samuel, A.R., Darpel, K.E., Veronesi, E., Oura, C.A.L., Singh,K.P., Nomikou, K., Potgieter, A.C., Attoui, H., van Rooij, E., van Rijn, P., De Clercq, K., Vandenbussche, F., Zientara, S., Bréard, E., Sailleau, C., Beer, M., Hoffman, B., Mellor, P.S., Mertens, P.P.C., 2008. Sequence analysis of bluetongue virus serotype 8 from the Netherlands 2006 and comparison to other European strains. Virology 377, 308-318]. Comparisons of amino acid sequences deduced from the Seg-10 genes showed a high level of conservation in the NS3/3A proteins from the Turkish viruses. The more frequent amino acid substitutions were identified by multiple alignment analysis, and one of the isolates (TR23) was remarkably found to be genetically quite distinct from the other isolates.
