Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 14Damage To Monumental Masonry Buildings in Hatay and Osmaniye Following the 2023 Turkey Earthquake Sequence: the Role of Wall Geometry, Construction Quality, and Material Properties(SAGE Publications Inc., 2024) Bozyigit,B.; Ozdemir,A.; Donmez,K.; Dalgic,K.D.; Durgut,E.; Yesilyurt,C.; Acikgoz,S.This article reports on the findings of an investigation on 29 historic stone masonry buildings located in the cities of Hatay and Osmaniye following the 2023 Turkey earthquake sequence. The earthquake couplet on 6 February (with moment magnitudes 7.8 and 7.5) and the following events (including another earthquake which occurred on 20 February with a moment magnitude of 6.3) resulted in significant damage to the buildings. To understand why, the examined buildings were assigned an EMS-98 damage level (ranging from 1 to 5) and descriptive response categories (masonry disaggregation, local mechanism, and global response). Overall damage statistics indicated that masonry disaggregation was common and coterminous with local mechanism response. Wall geometry and construction quality indices were then investigated to explore why these were the dominant damage mechanisms. Wall geometry indices highlighted insufficient amount of walls to resist the local seismic demands, particularly in the transverse (e.g. short) direction of buildings. This deficit promoted the formation of local mechanisms. Construction quality indices suggested that stone layouts did not enable interlocking and that the walls were prone to disaggregation. To further investigate the role of material properties on the observed damage, materials were characterized using three non-destructive testing techniques: ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) measurements to estimate the static elastic modulus of stones, Schmidt rebound hammer (SRH) tests to estimate the compressive strength of stones, and the mortar penetrometer (MP) tests to estimate the compressive strength of mortar. The measurements indicated poor mortar quality, which may have expedited failures. Using established correlations, various other important material parameters (e.g. mortar cohesion and homogenized masonry strength) are derived. Their portrayal in the mainstream Turkish cinema and TV in particular has contributed to the predominant imaginary in circulation which essentially is based on common binaries and stereotypes. In order to challenge prevailing stereotypes about the Roma, we have conducted a transformative action research project with the Roma people of the Sira district in Izmir, Turkey, who volunteered to make their own films. This article provides an account of this community filmmaking project. Locating the Roma in the conceptual framework of subalternity, we ultimately investigate whether it is possible to talk about agency in regard to the Roma people of Turkey.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Emigration Chests in Ankara, Turkey: Tracing Spatial Trajectories of Tatar Community(SAGE Publications Inc., 2022) Akış, TonguçDuring migration, whether due to war, political conflict, or poverty, immigrants of turmoil carry their limited personal belongings, family items, and supportive objects in their luggage, bags, and, in some cases, chests to their new homes. Throughout this displacement, chests of migration are necessary and valuable witnesses via their materiality and they wait in their specific corners of houses dare to be contemplated. After the demanding journey, some immigrants continue to use both the chest itself and its contents at their new house in the target locations. In addition, used chests and their contents link immigrants to the journey and to the former location. The immigrants often choose to organize, decorate, and arrange their homes and rooms according to these chests and the items within. This rich mutual relationship between chest, immigrant, and house allows for multidimensional readings considering the spatial trajectories and narratives of migration. Moreover, the trialectic relationships of chest, immigrant, and their space within generate the arguments on the production of space in particular. In this paper, decoding of recent in-depth interviews, documentation of chest locations on each space, and revealing archival material of immigrant families in Ankara, Turkey, are systematized to illustrate the journey of emigration together with the particularities of chest keepers' attitudes and feelings. Additionally, inscriptions, contents, types, and paths of chest are unlocked on private and communal spaces of the Tatar community. In this sector where science is used exceedingly, the "stealth" takes an important place. Radar-absorbing materials are used in stealth technology to disguise an object from radar detection, such that it can allow a plane to be perceived as a bird. In this study, Co-doped zinc oxide reinforced styrofoam sheet composites were manufactured as radar-absorbing materials. For this purpose, Co-doped zinc-ZnO particles were synthesized via the Sol-Gel method with doping concentrations of 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12%. They were embedded in a styrofoam matrix with different loading levels to see the concentration dependence. The as-prepared powders were characterized by using X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. Magnetic characterization of samples was carried out using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Finally, the radar-absorbing test was applied with a network analyzer to achieve the main purpose of this research. It was concluded that Co-doped zinc oxide reinforced composites have electromagnetic properties that indicate potential applications in the radar-absorbing area.Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 26Experimental and Statistical Analysis of Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites Interleaved With Nylon 6,6 Nonwoven Fabric Interlayers(SAGE Publications Inc., 2020) Beylergil, Bertan; Tanoğlu, Metin; Aktaş, EnginThermoplastic interleaving is a promising technique to improve delamination resistance of laminated composites. In this study, plain-weave carbon fiber/epoxy composites were interleaved with nylon 6,6 nonwoven fabrics with an areal weight density of 17 gsm. The carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates with/without nylon 6,6 nonwoven fabric interlayers were manufactured by VARTM technique. Double cantilever beam fracture toughness tests were carried out on the prepared composite test specimens in accordance with ASTM 5528 standard. The experimental test data were statistically analyzed by two-parameter Weibull distribution. The results showed that the initiation and propagation fracture toughness Mode-I fracture toughness of carbon fiber/epoxy composites could be improved by about 34 and 156% (corresponding to a reliability level of 0.50) with the incorporation of nylon 6,6 interlayers in the interlaminar region, respectively. The results also revealed that the percent increase in the propagation fracture toughness value was 67 and 41% at reliability levels of 0.90 and 0.95, respectively.
