Located in southeastern Türkiye, Mardin City presents an urban landscape characterized by stone-built heritage. This transforms Mardin into an open-air museum where the final stone products are exhibited. In addition to its cultural and historical significance, the present study explores the geological, physical, mechanical, mineralogical, petrographic, and chemical properties of the Mardin Stone through the samples collected from the Artuklu, Midyat and Savur districts of Mardin. The Mardin Stone is represented by two different types of limestone deposited during the Cretaceous-Eocene period, categorized as fossiliferous micritic limestone and micritic limestone. The physicomechanical and thermal characteristics suggest that the samples collected from the Artuklu district exhibit better engineering properties than those from the Midyat and Savur districts. The study mapped ancient and modern quarries, illustrating the significance of the stone extraction and crafting techniques used to produce the Mardin Stone. Additionally, it emphasized the ongoing use of stone in contemporary structures, its vital role in heritage conservation, and its export to various countries, notably for use in the Syriac diaspora churches. The evaluations demonstrate that the Mardin Stone, with its diverse architectural applications and symbolic element of the collective memory, meets the essential standards and criteria of the International Union of Geological Sciences-Heritage Stone Subcommission (IUGS-HSS) as a potential candidate for designation as Heritage Stone. © The Author(s) 2024.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Microstructural Characteristics of Mortars Prepared by Hot Lime Mix(Union of Croatian Civil Engineers and Technicians, 2020) Şerifaki, Kerem; Uğurlu Sağın, Elif; Böke, HasanThe effect of lime characteristics and hot lime mix method on hydraulic, microstructural and mechanical properties of mortars is determined by producing mortars from quicklimes of two different marbles and two limestones. Results of SEM-EDS, XRD and TGA analyses reveal that the porous microstructure of mortars and spongy texture of calcite crystals are the indicators of the hot lime mix method. Limestone is used in cement production. In this study, Schmidt hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity, porosity, uniaxial compression and indirect tension tests were conducted on limestone obtained from a historical structure. Regression analyses were used to develop models relating mechanical properties of limestone. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was performed to determine the mechanical properties. The performance of regression models and ANN were compared by existing models in the literature. The results showed that the regression models and ANN yield satisfactory performance with minimum error. The regression models between tensile strength and wave velocity, tensile strength and porosity, wave velocity and porosity have been developed for the first time in literature. The ANN is used for the first time to estimate the mechanical properties of limestone. The use of separate training and testing sets in the regression analyses of mechanical properties of limestone is conducted for the first time. The models developed in this study can be used by researchers and field engineers to relate the mechanical properties of limestone.Article Citation - WoS: 49Citation - Scopus: 57Characteristics of Lime Produced From Limestone Containing Diatoms(Elsevier Ltd., 2008) Böke, Hasan; Çizer, Özlem; İpekoğlu, Başak; Uğurlu Sağın, Elif; Şerifaki, Kerem; Toprak, GülcanIn this study lime binder used in stone and brick masonry mortars of some historic Ottoman baths was examined to understand whether the binders were hydraulic or not. For this purpose the mineralogical and elemental compositions and the microstructure of lime binder were determined by XRD, SEM-EDS and TGA analyses. The results indicate that the lime used in the brick dome mortars of Ottoman baths was hydraulic. Taking into account the kiln and fuel conditions of the 15th century, the possibility of obtaining hydraulic lime at relatively low temperature was examined. For this purpose limestone containing diatoms was heated at a relatively low temperature (850 °C), then slaked and carbonated. After heating and slaking, calcium silicate giving hydraulicity to the lime was indicated by XRD and SEM-EDS analyses. These results show that the production of hydraulic lime at a relatively low calcination temperature (850 °C) was possible with 15th century kilns.
