Book Part 1960s Tax Law and Non-Muslim Exodus From Istanbul: Turkification of the City(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Akpınar, İpekThis chapter discusses the urban consequences of the expulsion of Istanbul Greeks in 1964. It demonstrates the urban impact of the 16 March 1964 decree that terminated the residence of 12, 000 Greek passport holders in Istanbul (a population of 40, 000 with their relatives), who were given 24 hours to leave the city and allowed to carry only 20 kilograms of belongings or US$22 with them. The event also alarmed many other non-Muslim families to emigrate from Istanbul, while the city was receiving a large influx of immigrants from rural lands due to the growing industrialization and urbanization. These conditions influence occupants' visual comfort and perception. Thus, the design of the glazing component becomes more of an issue. With the emerging smart window technologies, the design options have expanded. These technologies have been investigated mainly in terms of energy performance. This paper presents a literature review of smart windows and their performance on visual comfort and human perception. Experimental studies that conducted measurements or surveys in this field are evaluated. The results of the study showed that with the growing technology of smart windows, it is possible to increase visual comfort and human satisfaction indoors. However, there are performance deficiencies that create particular problems for occupants. The aim of this paper is to collect the studies on smart glazing in terms of visual comfort and human perception and bring out the potential of smart window technologies for human-centric indoors. © 2023 IEEE.Conference Object The Effect of Lap-Splice Configuration on Seismic Performance of Substandard Rc Columns(fib. The International Federation for Structural Concrete, 2022) Baltacı, Alihan; Gündoğan, Safiye; Demir, Uğur; İlki, AlperA considerable amount of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in developing countries possess vital deficiencies such as incorporating poor quality of concrete and insufficient transverse reinforcement, and use of plain reinforcing bars without proper detailing, such as inadequate configurations of lap-splices at critical plastic hinging zones. While these can affect the strength and ductility of structural members adversely under seismic actions, research on such substandard structural members is scarce. As such, further information is valuable for the assessment of the seismic safety of such substandard columns constructed with inadequate lap-splice configurations of plain round bars. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of different lap-splice configurations of plain bars on the seismic performance of substandard RC columns and contribute to the development of assessment codes for such existing substandard buildings. Towards this aim, three full-scale columns were constructed to represent typical characteristics of substandard RC columns. The columns were subjected to constant axial loading (with an axial load to capacity ratio of 0.3) and reversed cyclic displacement reversals simultaneously representing gravity loads and seismic actions, respectively. The test program included i) one reference column with continuous longitudinal bars (no lap-spliced connection), ii) one lap-spliced column with an overlap length of 20 times the longitudinal bar diameter without any hook and iii) one lap-spliced column with an overlap length of 20 times the longitudinal bar diameter with a 180-degree hook. Test results demonstrated that columns with lap-splices did not reach their flexural strength and experienced more remarkable strength degradation with respect to the column reinforced with continuous longitudinal bars. On the other hand, presence of a 180-degree hook at the ends of spliced bars reduced the negative influence of inadequate lap-splice length in terms of strength and ductility.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 2Lighting Quality and Work Performance Based on Glazing Types and Dynamic Led Lighting(IEEE, 2022) Köse, Fatma Büşra; Tayfur, Gökmen; Duran, Hasan Engin; Kazanasmaz, Zehra TuğçeThe combination of daylight characteristics and LED lighting quantities determines offices' visual environment. Lighting conditions can influence office workers' health and work performance. This study is an experimental one containing lighting measurements in two offices, subjective performance tests, and questionnaires to find out how work performance, lighting preferences, and satisfaction with lighting quality modify in terms of various glass types and dynamic LED lighting quantities. Glass types have strong impacts on contrast tests on paper and luminance which are corresponding to work performance. Regarding lighting quality, it strongly relates to the homogeneity of light, the impression of artificial light and the perception of objects' textures and color, contrast balance between paper and the surrounding. When the glass was modified in offices, we observed that participants preferred to change the CCT setting of LED by remote control, and in relation to that the eye-level illuminance and SPDs showed significant changes. So, the findings depicted the importance of the choice of glass types concerning LED lighting settings in terms of the above variables.Article Citation - WoS: 30Citation - Scopus: 30Thermal Retrofitting for Sustainable Use of Traditional Dwellings in Mediterranean Climate of Southwestern Anatolia(Elsevier, 2022) Timur, Barış Ali; Başaran, Tahsin; İpekoğlu, BaşakThermal retrofitting implementations are crucial for safeguarding the functional sustainability of historical buildings as they can improve the thermal performance of these buildings while maintaining thermal comfort for their occupants. This study aims to examine the thermal behavior of a common historical building type in Anatolia / Turkey, the traditional houses with exterior hall (sofa), and to determine enhancement potentials of possible thermal interventions. Research method consists of on-site thermal measurements, laboratory analyses on traditional construction materials and transient thermal analyses utilizing simulations on DesignBuilder software. Study cases were selected from both urban and rural sub-settlements. The results demonstrated that the thermal insulation works within floor assemblies, airtightness measures, adding secondary glazing to windows and suggesting transparent circulation corridors provide significant energy improvements. These interventions would save 26.5% of building energy consumption in the urban and 30.4% in the rural sub-settlements when applied together. Furthermore, when the integration of a modern HVAC system, ground-source heat pump is implemented, these improvement rates can be increased to more than 60%. The behaviors of these structures depend on some parameters such as geometric shape, member sizes and kinematic properties. To provide the deployment, not only the arrangements of structural members but also some restrictions must be considered. Moreover, contiguous members of the structures must let the large rotations to provide the transformation between different geometric forms from fully folded to fully deployed configurations. These requirements have an important impact on the fundamental properties of the structures related with structural performance, such as stiffness and strength. In this paper, stiffness of different scissor-hinge linkages are analyzed and compared. These linkages cover the same span with almost the same geometry and have the unit elements with same size and same weight. However, the geometry of unit elements is different from each other. Such dynamic systems are capable of changing their geometric configurations repeatedly and reversibly relative to environmental conditions and occupant requirements. Thus, they may offer innovative building solutions by folding, expanding or curling. This study proposes a dynamic shelter structure that provides several shape options in response to the changing needs. In order to generate the shelter structure, first, loop assembly method used for developing the structure is introduced. Then, a parametric model is built in Grasshopper® not only to analyze the geometric properties of the loops and their alternative geometric forms but also to develop a flexible tool allowing changes at topological, geometrical and structural levels. Based on the geometric analysis, the structural mechanism is constructed. Transformation capability and possible configurations are studied. C.Radially deployable arches may be created by using various types of units. However, for any deployable structure to be constructed in real life, it should satisfy the structural regulations and codes. Despite various advantages from architectural perspective, deployable structures are weak to satisfy the operational code limits when compared to trusses with similar height and span. Therefore, weight minimization is very important to reduce the dead loads of the structure which facilitates the code-conformance of the structure. The optimization of the deployable structures requires an initial selection of the loop types to define the structure parametrically. An initial selection strategy depending on the loads on the structure is important to increase the efficiency of optimization process. Under uniform gravity loads, optimum arrangement for each unit type converges to a similar point. However, in the real world, the loads on the arches are not always uniform and the structure is exposed to nonuniform loadings such as point loads or lateral loads. This work focuses on the performance of various arches with different unit types under lateral and non-uniform vertical loads. Different lateral load and non-uniform gravity loading scenarios are created. For each scenario, the arches with different units are analyzed. In all cases, clear span and height are kept as same. The performance of an arch with a specific unit type for a given load is measured with a score that includes the deformations and the weight of the structure. All the members are assumed to be circular hollow sections with variable diameter and thickness to have a meaningful weight comparison between structures. This work intends to define an initial selection guide for deployable arches under typical non-uniform and lateral loading conditions. (C) 2020 The Authors. Each experiment was conducted under daylit conditions and consisted of two trials (with and without shading device) which were carried out in one experimental session. Twenty university students were recruited as participants to perform cognitive test as well as to administer subjective evaluations in a mock-up VDT station. Luminance ratios were grouped based on the ratios between bright light and direct surroundings. Results showed that the students gave faster responses for finding the correct target when the luminance distribution was not uniform whereas the number of correct answers given was higher when the luminance distribution was uniform. Subjective sensation of visual discomfort and lighting appraisal were in the same trend, indicating uniform luminance distribution was more appreciated by the participants. Based on these findings, the study provides additional insights in the effect of luminance patterns on individuals' performance, health and wellbeing in educational buildings. © 2020 IEEE.
