    Medical Geology Outreach: a Major Success Story From Turkey

    It is incumbent upon medical geology practitioners to reach out to students, science faculties, decision makers, and the biomedical/public health communities to promote this emerging discipline. Perhaps the most successful of these efforts have taken place in Turkey where medical geology courses have been offered in four medical and ten engineering faculties. As a result of these outreach efforts by the Turkish medical geology community for the past decade, there has been robust interactions with scientists from many disciplines and collaborative research on groundwater quality, asbestos, radon, arsenic, mesothelioma, fluorosis, etc. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

    Secondary Metabolites From Turkish Astragalus Species

    The genus Astragalus belonging to the Leguminosae family is a widely distributed plant throughout the temperate regions of the world. This plant species is used in various traditional and folklore medicines for the treatment of nephritis, diabetes, and uterine cancer and as antiperspirant, diuretic, and tonic. In Turkish folk medicine, the aqueous extracts of some Astragalus species are used to treat leukemia as well as for wound healing. The present chapter shall discuss about the secondary metabolites extracted from this plant species along with their uses in eradicating various ailments. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

    Exploring Student Information Management System Adoption Post Pandemic: Case of Turkish Higher Education

    Many aspects of our lives have changed during the pandemic including the accelerated adoption of technologies. Education was one of the segments that was disrupted by the pandemic, therefore Student Information Systems became critical at that time. This paper explores the adoption of Student Information Management Systems in multiple Turkish universities. The research model was adopted from a study conducted in the US, which is based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. More than three hundred students from seventeen universities responded, and the results indicated key factors of adoption. Furthermore, differences with the case in the US were identified. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

    On-Site Measurements of Temperature and Humidity Conditions for the Comparison of Urban and Rural Sub-Spaces of Traditional Settlements: Historical City of Muğla, Turkey

    One of the significant processes that ensures realistic determination of the energy needs of historical buildings is case-specific definition of their local microclimatic conditions. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to determine differences for the parameters of temperature and humidity in urban and rural sub-settlements of the historical city, Muğla/Turkey. Study method consists of on-site measurements of these variables in sub-settlements for comparisons. As a result, it was identified urban zone shows heat island characteristics with warmer, drier, and more stable conditions; while rural sub-settlement remains cooler, more humid, and more erratic. In parallel, calculated extents of these differences demonstrate the significance and necessity of on-site measurements and consequential microclimatic zoning of historical cities as conservation/planning tools for responding to the thermal needs of architectural heritage. A key application of these processes would be the establishment of local databases of case-specific weather data to be used in thermal simulation assessments. © 2023 Taylor & Francis.

    Convenient Site Selection of a Floating Pv Power Plant in Türkiye by Using Gis-Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process

    Floating photovoltaics (FPVs) are appearing as a promising and an alternative renewable energy opinion in which PV panels are mounted on floating platforms in order to produce electricity from renewable energy on water such as seas, dams, rivers, oceans, canals, fish farms, and reservoirs. So far, such studies related to the body knowledge on financial, technical, and environmental aspects of installation of FPV have not been performed in Turkey while expanding steadily in other countries. In this study, suitable site selection for installation of FPV power plants on three lakes in Turkey was studied by performing geographic information system (GIS) and the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) as multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method. This detailed study revealed that the criterion of global horizontal irradiance (GHI) was determined as the most crucial criterion for the installation of FPV on Beysehir Lake, Lake of Tuz, and Van Lake. Additionally, it was clearly seen that the Beysehir Lake had the highest value approximately 52% among other lakes for installation, that is why Beysehir Lake is selected as the best option for installation of an FPV system with this multi-criteria approach.

    Recent Nation Gardens and Historical Development of Public Green Spaces in Turkey;

    Focusing on contemporary Turkey's "nation gardens" and the state and governmental policies to build them, this study investigated the development processes and design features of these public green spaces with respect to those from past eras of Turkey (extending to Ottoman and pre-Ottoman history) and the development of public green spaces as the state's symbolic and spatial tools. The study relied on secondary sources about public green spaces from past eras of Turkey and also on the review of online news about "nation gardens" initiated after President Erdoǧan's announcement in May 2018. Our findings suggested that public green spaces in Turkey have played an important role in displaying the state's power nationally and internationally as well as to transfer the state's ideologies to people and thus, to build new identities of 'citizens.' Interestingly, in sharing these intentions of past policies for public green spaces, the recent introduction of nation gardens differs from those in the 19th and 20th century. Without any emphasis on modernization goals in the western-style, recent official talks described nation gardens as a way to raise Turkey and the government's reputation both nationally and internationally, while also referring to past eras but with other characteristics as the source of "traditions" extending to today. © 2020 The authors.
