    Iron-Promoted 1,5-Substitution Reaction of Endocyclic Enyne Oxiranes With Memgbr: a Stereoselective Method for the Synthesis of Exocyclic 2,4,5-Trienol Derivatives

    The iron-promoted 1,5-substitution reaction of endocyclic oxiranes with MeMgBr yields exocyclic 2,4,5-trienols with high diastereomeric ratios of up to 100:0. However, for the method's success, the oxirane ring must have a trans-configuration. The reactions exhibit strong stereoselectivity concerning the methylation mode and the configuration of the resulting exocyclic double bond. Enantiomerically pure enyne oxiranes can be synthesized through Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation and subsequent manipulations. With these reagents, it has been possible to produce exocyclic 2,4,5-trienols in enantiopure forms. Importantly, this process maintains chirality without degradation during the center-to-axis transfer of chirality.

    Revisiting the Turkish-Israeli Alliance of the 1990s

    The Turkish-Israeli ‘honeymoon’ of the 1990s has been explained by different concepts such as alliance, strategic partnership, or cooperation and friendship, with these concepts often used interchangeably. As a corollary of the Turkish official narrative, which is based on a national security approach, certain explanations were offered in justification of the close relationship, including shared traditional democratic culture and secular character, as well as conducive international atmosphere. According to this construction, Turkey had no option but to align with Israel. On the other hand, while the ‘honeymoon’ was often seen as a foreign policy issue directly affected by the military bureaucracy, negative discourses against Israel in domestic politics, and institutional challenges in the Turkish state structure were often ignored. By way of filling this lacuna, the present article evaluates the impact of domestic factors, including the capital-owning class, lobbies, and institutional changes in the Turkish security apparatus on Turkish-Israeli relations. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

    Influence of Microstructure and Crystallographic Texture on Hydrogen Diffusion in If-Steel

    The relation between microstructure, crystallographic texture, and hydrogen diffusion was studied on a IF-steel. The steel samples were deep drawn to a strain level of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% and then the hydrogen diffusion coefficients were determined using the Helios II system. Light optical microscope (LOM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used for microstructural characterization and crystallographic texture studies. The dependence of microstructural parameters was evaluated by Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) values. These evaluations showed that local misorientations, crystallographic texture, and dislocation densityare interdependent. The PCC values show that grain size and dislocation density are the independent microstructure related parameters. These parameters were used to build a model to predict the hydrogen diffusion coefficient by multiple linear regression analysis. A sensitivity analysis was also performed with this model to understand to which parameter the hydrogen diffusion is most sensitive. The results of this analysis show that hydrogen diffusion is more sensitive to dislocation density, suggesting that dislocations are more effective trapping sites for hydrogen atoms. On the other hand, grain boundaries are less effective trapping sites since they also provide an additional diffusion mechanism.

    A Cluster of Surprise Egg Toys as Designed Objects at the Intersection of Design and Culture [2]

    This study examines the cultural context of a cluster of surprise egg toys. The cluster contains 167 toys, collected between the years 1993 and 2015. The study methodology consisted of content analysis involving both qualitative interpretation and quantitative techniques. The interpretation is initiated with the toys’ physical materiality. Analysis is then developed on the compositional modalities of each toy, the place of each in the cluster, and the cluster as a whole. Qualitative interpretation and theoretical analysis of detailed descriptions and groupings of the cluster highlight the central themes found at the intersection of design and culture. Analysis of the cluster reveals that it carries the duality, or the tension, between modern and postmodern cultures with one elevating functionality and the other using storytelling as a means of creativity. They are designed objects and design things blending the two cultures in their physical content, and can be seen as artifacts that contribute to the value of design in everyday life within the context of mass culture. © Common Ground Research Networks, Nilüfer Talu, All Rights Reserved.

    Spatial Graphoids

    To study knotted graphs with open ends arising in proteins, we introduce virtual graphoids, which are virtual spatial graph diagrams with two distinguished degree-one vertices modulo graph Reidemeister moves applied away from the distinguished vertices. Generalizing previously known results, we give topological interpretations of graphoids. By analyzing the Yamada polynomial, we provide bounds for the crossing numbers. As an application, we can produce nontrivial graphoids by verifying that they satisfy adequacy conditions in the same spirit as Lickorish and Thistlethwaite’s notion of adequate links. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Vascularized Mini Cooling Channels To Achieve Temperature Uniformity: Battery Thermal Management and Electronic Cooling

    Here we propose to use of distinct vascularized plates to be used in the applications of battery thermal management and electronic cooling. The temperatures of battery cells increase during charge and discharge; and elevated temperature values in them accelerated degradation and even may trigger battery fire because of the thermal runaway. Therefore, thermal management system is a necessity for battery packs to increase the battery performance and diminish the risk factors in the electric vehicles. Generally, high amount of heat is released in the high capacity (>15 Ah) cells in short time interval under fast charge/discharge conditions; thus, thermal management of the battery system can be achieved with liquid cooling in that situation. A silicon heater system which represents the thermal behavior of a battery cell is manufactured based on the literature and it is used in experiments. Such a method has not proposed up to now in the literature, so the study may be creating a new experimental procedure for future studies without the risk of battery fire/degradation to uncover even extreme conditions experimentally. Electronic cooling is also in prime importance due to enhanced computing requirement of current systems, and vascularized plates can solve the hot spot problems occurring with decreased energy consumption. According to the results, the cooling capacity of the vascularized plates are calculated as 20W, and a battery cell can be kept within its optimal operating temperature range when the heat loads up to 30W. Also, the temperature uniformity along the surface of mimic of the battery is satisfied by vascularized plates.

    A Reaction-Based Scenario for Fluorescence Probing of Au(iii) Ions in Human Cells and Plants

    A BODIPY-based fluorophore decorated with a gold specific reactive handle (e.g., 2-alkynylallyl alcohol) displayed a ratiometric fluorescence change in response to Au3+ ions with extraordinary selectivity over other competing metal species, including Hg2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pd2+. By way of a gold-catalyzed intramolecular cyclisation-isomerisation reaction sequence, a BODIPY construct with an extended p-conjugation transformed into a new structure with a relatively short p-system. This unique chemical transformation was accompanied by, and resulted in, a dramatic shift in the emission and absorption wavelength, which could be monitored as distinct changes in the color of the solution's emission. Apart from its outstanding analytical performance in solution, including a quick response time (<10 s), unique specificity, a high-fold ratio-metric change (62-fold), and a remarkably low detection limit (358 nM), the probe also proved useful in monitoring Au3+ ions in human cells and plants (e.g., Nicotiana benthamiana).

    Synthesis, Cytotoxicity, and Antibacterial Studies of 2,4,5,6-Substituted Hexahydro-1h

    In this study, synthesis of novel isoindole-1,3-dione analogues bearig halo, hydroxy, and acetoxy groups at the position 4,5,6 of the bicyclic imide ring was performed to examine their potential anticancer effects against some cell lines. A multistep chemical pathway was used to synthesize the derivatives. The cytotoxic effect of trisubstituted isoindole derivatives were evaluated by determining cellular viability using the MTT assay against A549, PC-3, HeLa, Caco-2, and MCF-7 cell lines. The C-2 selective ring-opening products were obtained from the ring-opening reaction of 5-alkyl/aryl-2-hydroxyhexahydro-4H-oxireno[2,3-e]isoindole-4,6(5H)-diones with nucleophiles such as chloride (Cl-) and bromide (Br-) ions. In addition, the ring-opening products halodiols were converted to their related acetates. The anticancer activity of synthesized isoindole-1,3-dione derivatives was investigated against HeLa, A549, MCF-7, PC3, and Caco-2 cells in vitro and resulted in varies cytotoxic effect depend on the group attached to the isoindole molecule. Furthermore, the evaluation of the antimicrobial action of trisubstituted isoindole derivatives against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria was assessed and found out selective inhibition of the both bacterial growth via different trisubstituted isoindole derivatives. The results of this work encourage further research on the potential utilization of trisubstituted isoindole derivatives as cytotoxic and antimicrobial agents.

    Reconsidering the Turkish–islamic Synthesis: Emergence of Iran and Shi‘ism as the Rivals of the Turkish–islamic Identity

    Turkish–Islamic Synthesis has been an influential doctrine since the 1970s in Turkey. It emerged as a national/cultural reaction against the rising influence of the leftist and radical Islamist movements and has been discussed within these contexts. This study will expand the scope of the concept and offer Iran/Shi‘ism as a threat to Turkey’s national/religious integrity within the context of Turkish–Islamic Synthesis. The historical/ideological rivalry between the Sunni/Shi‘a and Turks/Iranians reached its peak after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. This study, which examines the issue with regards to the otherness and friend/enemy distinction perspectives, aims to include Iran and Shi‘ism in the discourse on Turkish–Islamic Synthesis and will use primary sources on the subject. © Nail Elhan and Başar Şirin, 2023.

    Revealing the Climate-Responsive Strategies of Traditional Houses of Urla, İzmir

    Vernacular houses possess significant climate-responsive properties due to the accumulated information from the trial-and-error method. Therefore, the traditional houses of a region can guide new buildings in terms of adaptation to the climate. The study focuses on the climate-responsive properties of vernacular houses of Urla, İzmir. The study aims to reveal the specific strategies of the traditional houses of Urla in response to the hot and humid Aegean climate. Relating to this purpose, Postane Street, which is among the significant historic streets of the town, is selected as the case area to evaluate the vernacular houses of Urla. The research method is based on the climate-responsive strategies determined from the literature review in the first part. These criteria include “orientation to the sun and wind, the effect of direct sunlight and shading strategy, building envelope and form, interior space organization, integration of greenery, building materials, and roof strategy”. Climate Consultant and Design Builder Software were used to prepare the psychrometric graph and shading regime visualizations. The study showed that the climate-responsive strategies of the street’s vernacular houses are shaped to avoid excessive heat gain in the climate of Urla. The research results are expected to guide sustainable design applications in the same area. © International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development.
