Article The Effects of Lactobacillus and/or Bifidobacterium in Fermented Foods on Cognitive Health: A Systematic Review(Frontiers Media SA, 2025) Harsa, Hayriye Sebnem; Gonzalez Domenech, Carmen Maria; Prvulovic, Milica; Agirbasli, Zeynep; Bagherzadehsurbagh, Erfan; Simeunovic, Valentina; Pracer, SmiljaBackground: Psychobiotics are microorganisms that modulate brain function via the gut-brain axis and are increasingly studied for their cognitive benefits. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, widely present in fermented foods, are considered safe and may influence cognition by modulating neuroinflammation, neurotransmitters, and gut barrier integrity. This systematic review examined the effects of foods fermented with these species on cognitive performance in healthy adults and individuals with mild cognitive impairment. Methods: We conducted the systematic review following EFSA guidelines, Cochrane methodology, and a PROSPERO protocol, using CADIMA for study selection and data extraction. PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were searched (1 January 1970-31 August 2023) for human intervention and observational studies assessing cognitive outcomes after ingestion of foods fermented with Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium. Eligible populations included healthy adults and individuals with mild cognitive impairment; studies involving disease were excluded. Screening, data extraction, and bias assessment followed Muka et al.'s 24-step guide using ROBINS and Cochrane/CADIMA frameworks. Evidence was synthesized narratively, while a non-systematic component examined food characteristics, potential mechanisms, and factors affecting bioavailability of bioactive constituents. Results: We included 21 studies (8 interventional, 13 observational). The majority of studies reported benefits, particularly in episodic memory, executive functions, and global cognition, but evidence was limited by inadequate controls, small sample sizes, short interventions, inconsistent domain assessment, and incomplete food characterization. Observational studies had larger populations and longer follow-ups but were limited by exposure assessment and depth of cognitive testing. Conclusion: Consumption of foods fermented with Lactobacillus and/or Bifidobacterium species may offer promising cognitive benefits. However, following EFSA's guidance on the substantiation of health claims, the current evidence is "neither convincing nor sufficient" to establish a causal relationship. However, the release of the Barbie 2023 Movie has shifted our focus from Barbie to Ken, marking the first occasion when Barbie has provided a platform for exploring representations of masculinity both in the patriarchal society and in popular culture. This article aims to investigate how the 2023 Barbie movie deconstructs symbols of hegemonic and toxic masculinity and its performative aspects within the framework of (post)feminist discourse. It examines how the movie satirically employs symbols of traditional, hegemonic masculinity to challenge normative masculine ideals prevalent in our patriarchal society. The movie -through its popularity- significantly contributes to mainstream postfeminist media culture, creating a platform where discussions on masculinity, its associated crises, and the broader gender wars, along with their existential ramifications, become unavoidable. Exploring the ways masculinities are problematized and contested within postfeminist media culture, I argue that Ken, within this narrative, is positioned as the latest icon of postfeminist masculinity, symbolizing a critical juncture in the ongoing discourse on gender roles and identities. Copyright © 2024 Yakalı.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 12Sucrose-Induced Hyperglycemia Dysregulates Intestinal Zinc Metabolism and Integrity: Risk Factors for Chronic Diseases(Frontiers Media SA, 2023) Mitchell, S.B.; Hung, Y.-H.; Thorn, T.L.; Zou, J.; Baser, F.; Güleç, S.; Aydemir, T.B.Objective: Zinc is an essential micronutrient that is critical for many physiological processes, including glucose metabolism, regulation of inflammation, and intestinal barrier function. Further, zinc dysregulation is associated with an increased risk of chronic inflammatory diseases such as type II diabetes, obesity, and inflammatory bowel disease. However, whether altered zinc status is a symptom or cause of disease onset remains unclear. Common symptoms of these three chronic diseases include the onset of increased intestinal permeability and zinc dyshomeostasis. The specific focus of this work is to investigate how dietary sources of intestinal permeability, such as high sucrose consumption, impact transporter-mediated zinc homeostasis and subsequent zinc-dependent physiology contributing to disease development. Method: We used in vivo subchronic sucrose treatment, ex vivo intestinal organoid culture, and in vitro cell systems. We analyze the alterations in zinc metabolism and intestinal permeability and metabolic outcomes. Results: We found that subchronic sucrose treatment resulted in systemic changes in steady-state zinc distribution and increased 65Zn transport (blood-to-intestine) along with greater ZIP14 expression at the basolateral membrane of the intestine. Further, sucrose treatment enhanced cell survival of intestinal epithelial cells, activation of the EGFR-AKT-STAT3 pathway, and intestinal permeability. Conclusion: Our work suggests that subchronic high sucrose consumption alters systemic and intestinal zinc homeostasis linking diet-induced changes in zinc homeostasis to the intestinal permeability and onset of precursors for chronic disease.
