Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Emigration Chests in Ankara, Turkey: Tracing Spatial Trajectories of Tatar Community(SAGE Publications Inc., 2022) Akış, TonguçDuring migration, whether due to war, political conflict, or poverty, immigrants of turmoil carry their limited personal belongings, family items, and supportive objects in their luggage, bags, and, in some cases, chests to their new homes. Throughout this displacement, chests of migration are necessary and valuable witnesses via their materiality and they wait in their specific corners of houses dare to be contemplated. After the demanding journey, some immigrants continue to use both the chest itself and its contents at their new house in the target locations. In addition, used chests and their contents link immigrants to the journey and to the former location. The immigrants often choose to organize, decorate, and arrange their homes and rooms according to these chests and the items within. This rich mutual relationship between chest, immigrant, and house allows for multidimensional readings considering the spatial trajectories and narratives of migration. Moreover, the trialectic relationships of chest, immigrant, and their space within generate the arguments on the production of space in particular. In this paper, decoding of recent in-depth interviews, documentation of chest locations on each space, and revealing archival material of immigrant families in Ankara, Turkey, are systematized to illustrate the journey of emigration together with the particularities of chest keepers' attitudes and feelings. Additionally, inscriptions, contents, types, and paths of chest are unlocked on private and communal spaces of the Tatar community. Daylight was the source of illumination being considered as the most significant and preferred one. A total of 26 participants performed visual and cognitive demanding tasks as well as providing subjective alertness, performance and visual evaluations in a full-scale mock-up VDT workstation. Two trials (with and without shading system) were executed during one experimental session. Results revealed that the use of a shading system improves the performance of a user on colour-naming task requiring sustained attention, while no differential effects were observed on tasks involving other cognitive skills such as search velocity and vigilance. Within-subject performance differences were more pronounced during morning hours. Although key strategies (such as energy efficient lighting products, lighting control systems and energy simulation software) are developed so far, such attempts may be unsuccessful unless users are not taken into consideration. Users’ behaviours and their manual lighting control actions depend on various factors, though within the scope of this study manual lighting control behaviour was analysed only in terms of interior layout and daylight illuminance. Three private offices in Izmir Institute of Technology were monitored using illuminance metres and occupancy/light detectors under eight different interior layout conditions. In relation to change of interior layout and daylight penetrations, users’ manual lighting control behaviours were monitored. The obtained data were then used to construct a fuzzy logic model in MATLAB FIS editor. A fuzzy logic algorithm was applied to classify behaviour patterns about the tendency to turn on the lights. This kind of prediction of the light usage tendency regarding the occupancy is aimed to foresee the ‘possible’ manual lighting control behaviour within given conditions. The lead- and barium-rich forms were prepared by treatment of the original clinoptilolite with Pb(NO3)2 and BaCl2 respectively, while the hydrogen-rich form was prepared by NH4Cl and heat treatment. Water and CO2 adsorption experiments were conducted in a volumetric system under static conditions, with low-pressure adsorption data being used for the characterization of the natural, Pb-rich, Ba-rich and H-rich clinoptilolite samples. Although the existence of barium-exchange was not noted, an appreciable decrease in CO2 adsorption was observed with the Pb-rich and H-rich forms due to a decrease in the electrostatic interaction between the surface and the adsorbate. Application of the Dubinin-Astakhov equation to the water adsorption data established the existence of micropores of different sizes that exhibited different adsorption mechanisms.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Interlayer on the Damage Formation in a Ceramic/Composite Armor at a Low Projectile Velocity(SAGE Publications Inc., 2017) Taşdemirci, Alper; Tunusoğlu, GözdeThe damage formation in a multilayered armor system without and with an interlayer (rubber, Teflon, and aluminum foam) between the front face ceramic layer and the composite backing plate were investigated experimentally and numerically. The projectile impact tests were performed in a low-velocity projectile impact test system and the numerical studies were implemented using the nonlinear finite element code LS-DYNA. The results of numerical simulations showed that the stress wave transmission to the composite backing plate decreased significantly in Teflon and foam interlayer armor configurations. Similar to without interlayer configuration, the rubber interlayer configuration led to the passage of relatively high stress waves to the composite backing plate. This was mainly attributed to the increased rubber interlayer impedance during the impact event. The numerical results of reduced stress wave transmission to the backing plate and the increased damage formation in the ceramic front face layer with the use of Teflon and foam interlayer was further confirmed experimentally.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7The Effect of Perforations on the Stress Wave Propagation Characteristics of Multilayered Materials(SAGE Publications Inc., 2016) Taşdemirci, Alper; Kara, AliThe effect of perforated interlayers on the stress wave transmission of multilayered materials was investigated both experimentally and numerically using the Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) testing. The multilayer combinations consisted of a ceramic face plate and a glass/epoxy backing plate with a laterally constrained low modulus solid or perforated rubber and Teflon interlayer. The perforations on rubber interlayer delayed the stress rise time and reduced the magnitude of the transmitted stress wave at low strains, while the perforations allowed the passage of relatively high transmitted stresses at large strains similar to the solid rubber interlayer. It was concluded that the effect of perforations were somewhat less pronounced in Teflon interlayer configuration, arising from its relatively low Poisson's ratio. It was finally shown that SHPB testing accompanied with the numerical simulations can be used to analyze the effect of compliant interlayer insertion in the multilayered structures. © The Author(s) 2015.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 13Macromolecular Changes in Nilotinib Resistant K562 Cells; an in Vitro Study by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(SAGE Publications Inc., 2012) Ceylan, Çağatay; Camgöz, Aylin; Baran, YusufNilotinib is a second generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor which is used in both first and second line treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). In the present work, the effects of nilotinib resistance on K562 cells were investigated at the molecular level using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Human K562 CML cells were exposed to step-wise increasing concentrations of nilotinib, and sub-clones of K562 cells resistant to 50 nM nilotinib were generated and referred to as K562/NIL-50 cells. Antiproliferative effects of nilotinib were determined by XTT cell proliferation assay. Changes in macromolecules in parental and resistant cells were studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. Nilotinib resistance caused significant changes which indicated increases in the level of glycogen and membrane/lipid order. The amount of unsaturated lipids increased in the nilotinib resistant cells indicating lipid peroxidation. The total amount of lipids did not change significantly but the relative proportion of cholesterol and triglycerides altered considerably. Moreover, the transcriptional status decreased but metabolic turn-over increased as revealed by the FT-IR spectra. In addition, changes in the proteome and structural changes in both proteins and the nucleus were observed in the K562/NIL-50 cells. Protein secondary structural analyses revealed that alpha helix structure and random coil structure decreased, however, anti-parallel beta sheet structure, beta sheet structure and turns structure increased. The A. butzleri isolate displayed efficient surfactant-biodegrading capacity for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at concentrations of up to 100 mg/L in 6 days, corresponding to 99.0% removal efficiency. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was applied to observe the effects of varying concentrations of SDS on the biochemistry of bacterial cells. The city is located at a hot-humid climatic region. In order to forecast the IT and internal relative humidity (IRH) parameters in the building, a number of artificial neural networks (ANN) models were trained and tested with a dataset including outdoor climatic conditions, day of year and indoor thermal comfort parameters. The indoor thermal comfort parameters, namely, IT and IRH values between 6 June and 21 September 2009 were collected via HOBO data logger. Fraction of variance (R2) and root-mean squared error values calculated by the use of the outputs of different ANN architectures were compared. Moreover, several multiple regression models were developed to question their performance in comparison with those of ANNs. The results showed that an ANN model trained with inconsiderable amount of data was successful in the prediction of IT and IRH parameters in education buildings. It should be emphasized that this model can be benefited in the prediction of indoor thermal comfort conditions, energy requirements, and heating, ventilating and air conditioning system size. © The Author(s), 2011. Reprints and permissions:Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 28Thermal Analysis of the Domed Vernacular Houses of Harran, Turkey(SAGE Publications Inc., 2011) Başaran, TahsinMinimum energy consumption and economic efficiency using local and recyclable materials is essential for achieving sustainability, considering the depletion of global energy sources. The Anatolian Peninsula presents a diverse range of local building construction techniques accumulated over centuries, which meet the criteria mentioned above. Due to richness of climatic variety and the influence of many civilisations throughout history, Anatolian regions reflect this richness in their respective solutions to building construction. Built mainly out of brick and stone, mortared and plastered by mud, the domed vernacular houses of Harran, a small town in the province of Urfa in the hot arid climate of southeastern Anatolia, are one of the best examples that deserve attention with respect to minimum energy consumption. In this study, the thermal performance of the "Harran house" as a vernacular type was analysed. For this purpose, temperatures inside and outside a Harran house complex with relative humidity variations were measured. In addition, for investigating the domed houses' thermal behaviour, temperature measurements at different surfaces and media were recorded. The solar chimney effect obtained from the dome and the importance of the thermal mass of the square base of the house were also evaluated. The study yielded results, which showed that the indoor conditions were within the limits for thermal comfort even under extreme summer conditions.
