This study investigates the strength development and micro-structural characteristics of tropical residual soil stabilized with magnesium chloride (MgCl2) solution. Unconfined compression strength (UCS) and standard direct shear tests were used to assess the strength and shear properties of the stabilized soil. In addition, the micro-structural characteristics of untreated and stabilized soil were discussed using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as X-ray diffractometry (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDAX), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area analysis. From the engineering point of view, the results indicated that the strength of MgCl2-stabilized soil improved noticeably. The degree of improvement was approximately two times stronger than natural soil after a 7-day curing period. The results also concluded the use of 5 % of MgCl2 by dry weight of soil as the optimum amount for stabilization of the selected soil. In addition, the micro-structural study revealed that the stabilization process modified the porous network of the soil. The pores of the soils had been filled by the newly formed crystalline compounds known as magnesium aluminate hydrate (M-A-H).Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 23Determination of Caco 3 and Sio 2 Content in the Binders of Historic Lime Mortars(Springer Verlag, 2012) Uğurlu Sağın, Elif; Böke, Hasan; Aras, Nadir; Yalçın, ŞerifeThe binders of historic mortars composed of small grain sized silica (SiO 2) and carbonated lime (CaCO 3) are considered as the main part that give hydraulic character and high strength to the mortar. In this study, FTIR, SEM-EDS, LIBS and XRD spectroscopy were used to find out the weight ratios of CaCO 3 to SiO 2 in the binders of historic lime mortars. For this purpose, a series of pure calcium carbonate and silica mixture were prepared in ten combinations in varying ratios from 0.5 to 5. Calibration curve was prepared for each analysis by plotting the peak area or intensity ratios of CaCO 3 to SiO 2 versus the weight ratios of CaCO 3 to SiO 2. A good linear correlation coefficient was obtained for each analysis respectively. The analyses were then tested on the binder of the Roman mortar samples. The results indicated that FTIR, SEM-EDS and LIBS spectroscopy are convenient tools to determine the weight ratios of CaCO 3 to SiO 2 in the binders of mortars. But XRD spectroscopy is not convenient for quantitative analysis of binders due to the presence of varied amounts of amorphous or poor crystalline silica in their compositions.Article Citation - WoS: 75Citation - Scopus: 78Classification of Turkish Olive Oils With Respect To Cultivar, Geographic Origin and Harvest Year, Using Fatty Acid Profile and Mid-Ir Spectroscopy(Springer Verlag, 2008) Gürdeniz, Gözde; Özen, Fatma Banu; Tokatlı, FigenFatty acid composition and mid-infrared spectra of olive oils in combination with chemometric techniques were used in the classification of Turkish olive oils with respect to their varieties, growing location and harvest year. In particular, olive oil samples belonging to five different cultivars were obtained from the same orchard in the middle part of Aegean region and two of these varieties were also received from another orchard in northern part of the same region of Turkey in two consecutive harvest years. Evaluation of nine different fatty acid compositions with principal component analysis revealed clear differentiation with respect to variety, geographical origin and harvest year. On the other hand, mid-infrared spectra also achieved varietal and seasonal discrimination to some extent, but differentiation is not as clear as that obtained using fatty acid compositions. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 14Chemical Characterization of Cretan Clays for the Design of Restoration Mortars(Springer Verlag, 2008) Budak, Meral; Maravelaki-Kalaitzaki, Pagona; Kallithrakas-Kontos, NikolaosThree clays and a marly-limestone from the West of Chania, Crete, fired at temperatures ranging from 200 to 1200°C, were characterized by XRD, FTIR, EDXRF and wet chemical analyses. The aim of this study was to assess the pozzolanic and hydraulic properties of these materials for potential use as binders in the design of restoration mortars. The mineralogical composition of the clays is quartz, illite, calcite, plagioclase, kaolinite and hematite. The identification of larnite and gehlenite in the calcined marly-limestone established it as potential cementious binder. Among the clays, one with low amount of calcite and considerable kaolinite content exhibited the best pozzolanic activity upon heating at 600°C. Therefore, it can be considered as an appropriate material for restoration purposes. It is deduced that the pozzolanic activity of fired clays is greatly dependent on the firing temperature and is enhanced in clays containing low calcite and high kaolinite amounts. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.
