Effects of Particle Size and Electrical Resistivity of Filler on Mechanical, Electrical, and Thermal Properties of Linear Low Density Polyethylene-Zinc Oxide Composites
(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2013) Özmıhçı Ömürlü, Filiz; Balköse, Devrim
The effects of particle size and electrical resistivity of zinc oxide (ZnO) on mechanical properties, electrical and thermal conductivities of composites made with linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) were investigated. Micron sized (mZnO), submicron sized (sZnO), and nano sized (nZnO) powders having resistivities of 1.5 × 106, 1.5 × 109, and 1.7 × 108 were used to prepare composites with 5-20 vol % filler. The tensile strength was lowered and the modulus of elasticity of the composites was increased with ZnO addition. Rather than the particle size of the ZnO, its initial resistivity and aspect ratio affected the resistivity of composites. The resistivity of the LLDPE was lowered from 2.3 × 1016 Ω cm down to 1.4 × 1010 Ω cm with mZnO addition. Thermal conductivity of the composites was increased with ZnO addition 2.5-3 times of the polymer matrix. The composites can be used for electrostatically dissipating and heat sink applications due to their decreased electrical resistivity and increased thermal conductivity.

Probing Nanoscale Domains of J-Aggregates Deposited on a Mica Surface
(American Chemical Society, 2004) Demir, Mustafa Muammer; Özçelik, Serdar; Birkan, Burak
J-aggregates of 1,1′,3,3′-tetraethyl-5,5′,6,6′- tetrachlorobenzimidazolocarbocyanine (TTBC) were deposited on a mica surface and probed by atomic force microscopy operated at tapping mode in air. Optical spectra showed that J-aggregates were formed in aqueous solutions. Atomic force microscopy images revealed that J-aggregates deposited on mica surfaces mainly present single domains with a mean height of 2.00 ± 0.25 nm and an average diameter of 100 ± 20 nm. Quantitative analysis of the morphology of images indicated that the single domain of J-aggregates exhibits very uniform height and diameter distributions with polydispersity indices of 1.02 and 1.04, respectively. Based on the results, we propose a two-dimensional nanostructure in which TTBC J-aggregates could be arranged in a monolayer.

The Effect of Sb Substitution of Cu in Bi1.7pb0.3sr2ca2cu 3-Xsbxoy Superconductors
(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2000) Kocabaş, Kemal; Çiftçioğlu, Muhsin
The effect of partial substitution of Cu in Bi1.7Pb0.3Sr2Ca2Cu 3-xSbxOy at x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 levels on the electrical and structural properties was investigated in this work. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that these materials have a multiphase structure. Two different types of particles with different morphologies were observed in scanning electron micrographs. The Tc values decreased from 103.5 to 87 K for x = 0.1 Sb substitution level with a subsequent increase to 101 K at x = 0.2.
