Master Thesis From Space To Junkspace: Four Episodes Of/In Architectural Theory(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Yalçın, Zeynep Özge; Erten, ErdemThis thesis focuses on four concepts in architectural theory; space, place, nonplace, and junkspace, and points to understanding possible connections and relationships between these concepts. It aims to investigate how these relationships are established and possible causes in architectural history which might have led to their emergence and use by tracing the evolution of these concepts through a literature review. The discussion will be framed around episodes of debate on the concepts regarding the history of architectural theory. Conceptualized as a force field generated by the dynamism of bodily movement, the understanding of space by empathy theory profoundly influenced modern architecture. Modern architecture’s preoccupation with space was criticized with recourse to the concept of place. Anticipating postmodernist sensitivity place challenged the dominance of space. However, the focus on place, in opposition to space, was also criticized for the tendency to create scenographic effects driven by commercial interest. The “production” of “places” was followed by the definition of two important concepts: “non-place” by Augé and “junkspace” by Koolhaas. By reading the debates around these four concepts as episodes of/in architectural theory, I not only aim to see the relations between these concepts but also understand how the impact of globalization is visible regarding “non-place” and “junkspace.”Master Thesis Formation of Architectural History as a Discipline in Modern Architectural Education in Turkey(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Yıldırım Özcan, Helin; İnceköse, Ülkü; Yıldırım Özcan, Helin; İnceköse, ÜlküArchitectural history courses, which examine the architectural works, buildings, and social structure of societies from various civilizations, regions, and ages with multiple viewpoints, are an important part of architectural education. In Turkey, within the scope of the education programs, architectural history courses take place in doctorate, master, and undergraduate programs, and in terms of undergraduate education, they are one of the critical elements of the compulsory courses. Undergraduate architectural education and architectural history courses are taught in 101 of Turkey's 204 universities, but when these courses are examined from a varied perspective, they show differences in the distribution to the semesters, duration, scope and subject content, naming, course sources, or local and national crediting. While this situation causes an architecture student studying architecture in Turkey to graduate with knowledge of architectural history at different scales, it also contradicts the National Qualifications Framework Charter in Turkey. Also, the consequences of this situation appear in many areas with negative examples both in education life and the built environment. In this context, within the scope of this study, architectural history courses in undergraduate architectural education in Turkey are examined through data from the ECTS information package with the purpose of revealing the portfolio of architectural history education. The main objective of this study is to examine the effects of the causes and consequences of these differences on architectural undergraduate education by analyzing the different approaches seen in the scope of Architecture History courses in undergraduate architecture education in Turkey using numerical data.Master Thesis A Study on the Use and Design of Mechanisms in Art and Architecture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Maral, Mesude Oraj; Korkmaz, KorayThis study consists of research on developmental processes, fundamentals, kinematic properties, and design methods of art and architectural examples that involve mechanisms and a proposal of a novel method of designing polygonal deployable surfaces. The effect of motion studies on art and architecture is analyzed from the first technical studies of motion and portable examples of architecture. The pre-industrial automata, acoustic designs, musical instruments, water-lifting devices, and aqueducts were designed by artists and architects as well; windmills that are the first rotating structures, clocks, clock towers, construction machines and early examples of movable bridges are examined. The kinematic properties and fundamentals of mechanisms are analyzed. The kinematic structural analyses of contemporary art and architectural products are conducted by drawing kinematic diagrams, demonstrating link and joint types and numbers; and mobility calculations. The primary units and assembly methods of them are examined. Strengthening the bond among the fields of kinetic architecture, art and mechanism science is intended. The present study is the first source in which examples from the related fields and corresponding kinematic science are explicitly transmitted for artists and architects. Finally, a novel design method for polygonal deployable surfaces that is adaptable to climatic, functional, visual and/or social needs is developed. The method starts with the kinematic design of the triangular primary unit, which is topologically Bennett's plano-spherical mechanism. The planar position provides covering surfaces, while the spherical linkage generates a 3D dynamic form during movement. The design is adapted to polygons and multiplied in Archimedean tilings. A single actuator can drive all designs. The modularity provides designs versatility and flexibility.Master Thesis Bim Execution Process of Construction Companies for Building Projects(İzmir Institute of Technology, 2016) Gerçek, Bilge; İlal, Mustafa Emre; Günaydın, Hüsnü Murat; Tokdemir, Onur BehzatBuilding Information Modeling (BIM) is an emerging concept in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry promising to replace traditional 2D based construction documentation and management procedures and to reduce rework and cost in project execution. The level of information that could be assigned to building objects in BIM technologies could provide vast amounts of benefits to construction projects throughout projects’ life-cycle. Implementation of BIM, however, requires strategic planning to enable achieving these potential benefits. Industry-wide and organizational implementation guidelines and standards have been published around the world either to encourage organizations to adopt BIM or to present the minimum requirements to be followed where BIM implementation is a statutory obligation. In contrast, BIM implementation and/or deliverables has not been mandated by government or organizations yet in Turkey, therefore organizations which plan to adopt BIM processes have to develop their own implementation plans. The purpose of this study is to provide guidance in BIM implementation for construction companies particularly during the construction phase of the building projects. BIM standards and guidelines, and studies related to BIM implementation have been reviewed and important aspects of implementation have been identified. A case study of BIM implementation at a large construction company in Turkey to conduct quantity takeoff and cost estimation are presented and unique challenges of BIM implementation in Turkish AEC industry are discussed.Master Thesis An Analytical Approach To the Concept of 'topography in Architecture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2003) Muyan, Cem; Eyüce, ÖzenThe symbiosis of man and nature reveals their diverging interrelations, which are based on man's shifting idea of nature throughout history. These alterations in man's conception of nature have changed his attitudes towards it, thus his creations in relation with topography. Hence, within the scope of the study, the idea of nature, exploring its shifted meanings, is analyzed in order to contemplate the relationship between manmade and natural environment. Being guided by the urge to anchor to the world, man has always been in search of establishing somehow ideal relationship between manmade and natural environment within which topography remains as the most prominent concept in the context of physical surrounding. Therefore, the concept of topography is handled as the main concern of the thesis. By means of treating topographical formations whether as sacred places or as physical aspect of the world with which to create intimate relationship or as mere subordinate elements, man testifies that topography has had differing impression on his mind in accord with his idea of nature.In today's world where everything may be questioned about its authenticity or its state of being natural, the concept of topography in contemporary architecture, which has also an artificial sense and very different understanding than its precedent conception, is aimed to be explored while revealing its roots.Consequently, in the context of the study, besides the investigation of the changes in the conception of nature and its reflections on manmade environment, the concept of topography is examined in order to disclose the changes in its meaning that direct the way man deals with it.
