Master Thesis From Space To Junkspace: Four Episodes Of/In Architectural Theory(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Erten, Erdem; Erten, Erdem; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis thesis focuses on four concepts in architectural theory; space, place, nonplace, and junkspace, and points to understanding possible connections and relationships between these concepts. It aims to investigate how these relationships are established and possible causes in architectural history which might have led to their emergence and use by tracing the evolution of these concepts through a literature review. The discussion will be framed around episodes of debate on the concepts regarding the history of architectural theory. Conceptualized as a force field generated by the dynamism of bodily movement, the understanding of space by empathy theory profoundly influenced modern architecture. Modern architecture’s preoccupation with space was criticized with recourse to the concept of place. Anticipating postmodernist sensitivity place challenged the dominance of space. However, the focus on place, in opposition to space, was also criticized for the tendency to create scenographic effects driven by commercial interest. The “production” of “places” was followed by the definition of two important concepts: “non-place” by Augé and “junkspace” by Koolhaas. By reading the debates around these four concepts as episodes of/in architectural theory, I not only aim to see the relations between these concepts but also understand how the impact of globalization is visible regarding “non-place” and “junkspace.”Master Thesis A Research for Understanding the Hierarchy of Senses in Spatial Imagery(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Tamişçi, Bike Çisem; Çil, Ela; Çil, Ela; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe thesis focuses on senses, perception, memory and spatial imagery for exploring the hierarchy of senses in spatial imagery. An idea has emerged in the literature and architectural education that the sense of vision is dominant. In this study, whether this idea is correct or not is analyzed through student texts. In this study, the texts of the second, third and fourth-grade architecture students who took “Spatial Perception and Representation” course at Izmir Institute of Technology (IYTE) examined. Within the scope of the research, written, anonymous, positive and negative memory space texts collected from the students. The sentences analyzed according to sensory coding for both positive and negative memory texts. During this study, the senses used by the students in describing the spaces in their memories and the raids of these senses were examined and found a hierarchy or primacy of senses was tried to be made. The collected data analyzed. These data interpreted in the light of the information obtained from the pioneers in the literature research.Master Thesis A Critical Review of Literature on Space and Cinema(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Sever, Müge; Çil, Ela; Çil, Ela; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyFrom the beginning of the humanity, architecture discipline has an interaction with variety of art branches. The interaction between cinema and architecture has become one of the crucial subjects especially in recent years in the academy. Cinema and architecture are in a dynamic stream which feeds and change each other at the same time. In this study, I analyze the studies which discuss “space” as an important figure at the interaction of architecture and cinema. The objective was to determine the factors, the tools and the usage manners of the tools, which provide a relationship between cinema and architecture. Six different keywords (architecture, space, cinema, film, city, urban) in both English and Turkish were utilized in the study, and the obtained sources were examined via critical analysis regarding these keywords. By grouping these sources of the relationship between architecture and cinema according to their common concepts, the consequent objective of the thesis was shaped as to reveal how the related scholars have undertaken and approached to this relationship.Master Thesis The Peculiarities of Light as a Quality in Architecture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Kutlu, H. Gökhan; Erdoğdu Erkarslan, Özlem; Erkarslan, Özlem; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study focuses on the evolution of lighting, both natural and artificial, and its effects on space. The twentieth century is taken as a focal time period, which had witnessed great developments in lighting field that caused inevitable transformations on space and spatial concepts. The evolution of artificial light, the significant innovations in building technology, and the new requirements formed under the desires of a new society are examined in their relation to architectural context with respond to light and lighting in space. The research includes cases from architectural and artistic world, and tries to investigate the role of light in the built environment. These cases are examined in a comparative way, considering the psychical and experiential characteristics of light in order to define its meaning for space. The study consists of two parts. In the first part the process of the evolution of lighting in the twentieth century, its position today, and the social, cultural, and technological alterations are examined deterministically. The second part is a classification of cases under the guidance of some concepts, which defines the interaction of light and space.
