Master Thesis The Use and Importance of Emotional Design in Contemporary Design Practice(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Ürgen, Canalp; Kidöz, Şölen; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis thesis investigated emotional design concept. Products evoke emotions in people. This thesis suggests that emotions are at a basic importance for the success of a product since they influence product evaluation, purchase decision and product experience of users significantly. It is also claimed that, by the means of emotions, a higher user satisfaction, product longevity and a better product performance can be achieved, which will result in an enriched life.To provide an insight to emotional design concept, thesis investigated how products evoke emotions in people. Two recent design projects based on the traditions in emotion research were investigated in depth. Learning to Talk with Your Body project that is based on Jamesian tradition revealed that products could be designed to elicit predefined emotional responses in users. Emotionally Intelligent Alarm Clock project that is based on the cognitive tradition showed that it is possible to reach a higher user experience . thus an enriched life . through emotions. Aesthetics was considered as the most appropriate term encompassing the emotional attributes of products. Recent studies showed that, besides being appealing, aesthetic (attractive) products are perceived to perform better. Aesthetics generates a positive motivation for the user by contributing to the meaningfulness of the product. Thus aesthetics was accepted as a part of function. Roles of form, material and color in evoking emotions were investigated.Detailed observations about the emotional experiences of users with products and environment are fundamental necessities. Observing a user in a holistic structure, within a framework of a relational environment instead of evaluating user.s isolated performances in isolated activities will give a better understanding of user emotions.Master Thesis A Study of Colours Use Electrical Domestic Appliance(01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyColours have a crucial importance in human life. Humans use colours to give meaning to objects and to express their feelings, either visually either verbally. While colours and their associations may differ in different societies, their objectives in use are similar (like religious associations, status symbols, and to add aesthetic values, etc.). Thus at the 20 th Century with the international design movements colour became a common language in the field of design. When first released the means of the electrical domestic appliances were helping house-works. But in the 20 th century they changed identity and from bottom of the staircases and inside of cupboards, they took place on counter-tops and inside of the space lived-in. When this process is studied it is cleared out the role of colours on domestic appliances to gain their status. Izmir Institute of TechnologyDesign has become not only being related with the product, but rather being relevant with various meanings and symbols that surround the product. Within the transition from function oriented design to meaning oriented one, the fashion being an image creater has become influential on consumer product design. In creation of the product image it has been made use of the fashion system as the most affective mechanism upon the self image and fashion communication methods. The symbols concerning fashion which promise a social experience, a new identity, new meanings and imaginery lifestyles, become effectual on the communication of the products to the consumers. Within this study, the design communication which could be considered to be the interface between fashion and industrial design is examined due to the fashion's role in this communication and evaluated through brands such as Nokia with the designs related to informations technology being effective as much as dress on formation of the self image, and as Philips which forecasts the future design trends by the use of researches related to lifestyle and consumer's experiences.Master Thesis An Analysis of Shoe Within the Context Ofsocial History of Fashion(01.
