Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study examines the socio-spatial factors that impact female drivers in terms of spatial mobility and city experience, as well as the characteristics of their spatial mobility. Women’s spatial mobility tend to be family-oriented, shorter in distances, longer in time, multi-chained, and they tend to depend more on public transportation. Gender roles and safety are two main starting point in understanding the nature of women’s spatial mobility in the city. There are three factors that influence women’s spatial mobility: individual-related factors, social-related factors, and political related factors. Women who are older in age, married with at least one dependent child, have lower education, unemployed, and come from lower income household have less spatial mobility and overall city experience. Other political factors such as laws and regulations, and the lack of female participation in transportation and urban planning and academic studies play a critical role in hindering women’s spatial mobility. This aim of this research is to investigates two main aspects of women’s spatial mobility. The first aspect is to investigate the social and individual factors that impact her likability to drive her own car or to travel with other public transportation. The second aspect is the impact of gender role and the presence of at least one dependent child on the the characteristics of spatial mobility for women who drive/travel. This study is developed using a case study on female drivers and travelers from Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia. Jeddah was chosen as a new emergent case in the literature review. This study will include conducted surveys with 100 women who drive and women who travel, with or without at least one dependent child.Master Thesis Represantation of Urban Space in Cinema: a Review of Films in Izmir Between 1950-2016(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Eyecioğlu, Hilal; Can Traunmüller, Işın; Can Traunmüller, Işın; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyCinema in Turkey, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, has been a platform to reflect the images of the changing cities that have been affected by the cultural and economic transformations in the society. The purpose of this study is to examine the city of İzmir and its urban space characteristics as representations in cinema. Therefore, the scenes in the movies have been analyzed according to the representation of urban spaces in different periods, daily life presented in the scenes, as well as the transformation of urban spaces since 1950s. There are three stages in the study. Firstly, the films which were shot in İzmir by Turkish filmmakers have been listed. Then, as a determining factor, the movies which were shot in the urban spaces of İzmir have been considered. This study focuses on the movies which were shot within the boundary of the city. Secondly, the period between 1950 and 2016 has been divided into three sections. Films have been divided into periods according to the representation styles and subjects of films in between1950-2016. The reason for this is that the films, in which the subject, location representation, space typology, social and cultural life, etc. are similar, have been collected and examined together in a period. Thirdly, the symbolic urban spaces which are frequently at the foreground of the movies have been evaluated according to their transformations of morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional features. Consequently, this study contributes to the existing literature as it examines relation between the city and cinema through a large scale covering over 100 movies. It analyses the relationship between the represented urban spaces, and the development and transformation of the city on the basis of the urban history of İzmir. The results of the analyses have been discussed within the framework developed by Carmona et. al, under morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional dimensions of urban spaces. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyCities are complicated and dynamic structures. Urban agenda has changed constantly. Urban planning has to follow and reshape this dynamism as a return. Cities are under constant restructuring with parallel to spatial, economic, social and political conditions. In recent years, urban transformation has become turning point in planning system and occupied dominant role as a policy tool in Turkish context. Urban transformation has come to the planning agenda as an indispensable policy tool. Especially in the last two decades, urban transformation projects became a tool of spatial restructuring processes and solving major problems such as illegal housing, disaster risk, and uncontrolled urban sprawl. Moreover, with the generalization and reinterpretation of the context of transformation caused conceptual and practical confusion. The implementation of the urban transformation projects is taken place almost in all Turkish cities; however, it has felt more in big metropolitan cities as in the case of first Istanbul and then Ankara. The city of İzmir, seems to be subjected to all these discussions. This study first discusses the urban transformation concept as a tool of planning, by clarifying its principles on a global scale. After, it evaluates Turkey’s performance on a holistic approach, which means all interventions that caused transformation at the citywide level in the case of İzmir central areas. The analysis has conducted using multidimensional spatial data in GIS database in relation to general policies and legislation. All urban transformations projects in İzmir have digitalized geographically on a map to evaluate their location and attributes in relation to urban plans. As a result of these analyses, it has been concluded that despite the urban transformation concept was proposed as a solution to problems of the cities, it has evolved into a new problematic because of fragmented and speculative rent seeking activities or ineffective applications. The study aims to highlight these deficiencies and offer solutions.Master Thesis Evaluating Effects of Urban Social Movements for Public Space on Urban Policies(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017) Sungur, Burcu; Özdemir, Semahat; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03. It is concluded in the study that these movements can have a positive effect upon urban policies. While the study is concluded with a comparison between İzmir and the other cities examined within the study; some suggestions were offered to city dwellers that they should continue defending public spaces and to local governments that they should incorporate the ideas and energies of city dwellers in urban planning by working with them.
