The 19th century was a period of innovation for all countries, especially after the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences naturally had great effects on the cities. As the structure of the cities gradually turned into a production-oriented state, the population especially in the main European cities started to increase rapidly. With the effect of all these, a new spatial organizations emerged for the upper income group. The effects of this period were observed in the Ottoman Empire, too. The empire was open to the innovations with the declaration of the Tanzimat Edict. Naturally, cities have been directly affected by the new reforms and policies. Therefore, a transformation process has started in the Ottoman city structure. Izmir and Chios were important port cities for Western Anatolia. Especially Izmir became the most important port city after Istanbul with the construction of the railway. Although Chios has lost its importance after the rise of Izmir, it has remained an important stopping point. The general purpose of this thesis is to examine the suburban characteristics of the selected areas Buca, Bornova and Kampos while looking at the urban pattern of Izmir and Chios in 19th century.

Use of Literature in Understanding the Transformation of Domestic Architecture: Case of İstanbul Between 1908 and 1950
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Yılmaz, Merve; Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, Şeniz; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Domestic architecture is tightly related with socio-cultural changes and transformations within the society. However collecting data about the social relations of a previous period in which the witnesses and the solid materials are not available is a difficult task. Literature may be a useful source at this point, in order to reach data about a period which not much has remained. Especially novels involve literary spaces reflecting the details of daily life which usually takes place in the house. The need for such study was determined after analysing the Turkish housing history. It was noticed that the architectural historians have usually mentioned about the physical, economic or politic factors which affected and shaped the housing but the social relations were usually dismissed. One of the essential targets of this study is to reveal these social relations which have an important role on house design. In order to trace the transformation of domestic architecture, five novels in Turkish Literature have been analysed. These novels have been selected by non-random sampling method. Space is specified as Istanbul and the time interval is determined as years between 1908 and 1950, when socio-cultural changes in the society accelerated. Some social relations which shaped and transformed the housing have been revealed by analysing and interpreting the chosen literary texts. Information provided from the literary texts and the previous knowledge gained from the written housing histories altogether creates a whole giving a comprehensive perspective to the housing subject.

Inflatable Pillow System as a Glass Substitute in Terms of Building Envelope
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2003) Candemir, Kadri Uygar; Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, Şeniz; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
In the line with the increasing energy demand, there have been many investigations related with the conservation of energy used in buildings. The systems and materials used in buildings have an important role in consumption of energy. Transparent materials and the systems occupies transparent materials contributes this consumption in positive and negative way due to their design and properties. Nevertheless, the transparent materials used in buildings as glazing have importance in order to increase comfort, decrease cost and environmental harm. This study aims to investigate a contemporary construction system; ETFE foil pillow system, which is also known as, Inflatable Pillow System made of ETFE Foil. In the scope of the study, pneumatic pillow system investigated in detail and its performance evaluated due to environmental control criteria, which can be compared with other conventional glass glazing products. The study also involves cost analysis and brief knowledge about contemporary cases that have been completely or partially constructed with this system. The increase in the amount of transparent surfaces in contemporary buildings, pointed out that the conventional glazing system are no more appropriate. Therefore, in specific cases, usage of conventional glass glazing systems results as a cost increase and loss of comfort. The alternatives of the conventional glazing systems don.t have appropriate performance or don.t meet the need of the consumer. Inflatable ETFE foil pillows have better optical properties than glass glazing systems. Generally, thermal properties of this system equal to the advanced double-glazing. Light and heat transmission values vary by changing the foil type and number of layer. Low sound reduction index can be an obstacle or a chance for designers that should be given attention in design phase. The pillow system that relatively provides fire and earthquake protection is also lightweight and flexible. Thus, includes many criteria that are expected in contemporary constructions. The inflatable pillow system made of ETFE foil can be considered as a safe construction method due to mechanical properties of the system and the membrane material that is used as pillows. System reduces operational and maintenance cost for the building. Considerable amount of expenses for lighting and heating can also be reduced by the usage of the pillow system. The lightweight nature of the pillow system affects the construction of the whole building, which also results as a cost reduction.Pillow system is commonly used for greenhouses and botanical gardens and also used for sports and leisure halls as well as institutions ands museums. Addition to its usage as a skylight or façade cover, pillow system can be used as a total envelope that covers the whole construction underneath. As a result, this study investigates ETFE foil pillows and their environmental control properties against conventional glass glazing systems. The results are evaluated in the line with the information gained. The advantages and disadvantages of the system as a glazing are given in detail. Although it.s not expected that ETFE pillow system totally be replaced with the conventional glass glazing system, it constitutes an alternative glazing system in specific cases. Keywords: pillow system, pneumatic membrane, glazing, ETFE foil, glass, fluoropolymer, environmental control criteria.

Annexes and Extensions in Historical Buildings: an Ideological Perspective
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) İlter, Buket; Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, Şeniz; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The art of designing additions carries with it a host of unique challenges. Especially, in the case of annexes and extensions in historical buildings, ideology can be an important factor in shaping the design of the addition. Ideology.s close relation with the concept of identity also makes it a factor in shaping additions in historic buildings. However, studies about the subject generally address themselves to the examination of the functional necessities, and aesthetic concerns. Additions in historic buildings are mostly evaluated within the scope of conservation, and with their harmony to the historical context. This study attempts to analyse the design of additions in historical buildings from a different perspective, leaving aside the principles conservation and discussions of contextualism. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the reflections of ideological and social changes in the physical environment, and to examine the additions in historic buildings from that point of view. Within the scope of this thesis additions in historical buildings are investigated with special emphasis given to the concept of ideology. The interaction between ideology and architecture is explained through an examination of international and local samples. Also, the concept of conservation and historic building is discussed in relation to ideology. Basic reasons for building new architecture in historic settings are examined. Finally, classifications of addition buildings according to their location design approaches, and combined expressions are made.

Choral Works in Architecture in Terms of Hermeneutics
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2003) Işık, Arda; Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, Şeniz; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Discussions of the theoretical foundations of architecture increasingly refer to hermeneutics, a branch of continental European philosophy concerned with human understanding and the interpretation of written texts. Perez-Gomez, Vidler, Vattimo, Palmer and some contemporary theoreticians draw heavily on hermeneutics to question the ethical and epistemological latency of architecture . The concept of "hermeneutics as architectural discourse", which was first introduced by Perez-Gomez, naming "choral works", offers insights that may contribute to the understanding and procession of architecture regarding this issue of architectural epistemology . After briefly reviewing the historical development of hermeneutics as a method of interpretation, from its classical use through the modern debates, and confining the boundaries of "choral works" as architectural meaning, this thesis examines the contributions of choral works in architecture in terms of hermeneutics to the contemporary production methods and strategies of architecture. This background provides perspective for a review of recent hermeneutically-oriented architectural production modes. This includes the "event" diagrams of Bernard Tschumi redefining programming and de-structuring in architecture, Eisenmann's .space of between., Libeskind.s .traces of the invisible. for coding the affective structures of narratives and "hypersurface" theories confining [de] territories by computer aided design parameters.

    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Terim, Belgin; Terim, Belgin; Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, Şeniz; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Light Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF) System is a structural system made of Cold Formed Steel (CFS) Profile Frames. The structural behavior of this new construction system is derived from the traditional wooden frame systems. The new material that has been used in LGSF system which is the profile cold-rolled from sheet steel is an industrial material that needs the control of computer systems for accuracy. The structural system has been examined for more than 40 years in the construction practice. It is an alternative building material for the world and for Turkey in the last years, specifically for 1-2 storey single family houses. This study aims to make analysis of Light Gauge Steel Framing system which is a developing construction system, to define efficient uses of the system at the moment and to propose new ones for the future. To obtain different conceptions and theories on the system has been the main goal of the evaluation part. To fulfill this goal; first, the different examples around the world have been examined in different aspects in detail to make a comparative evaluation, then, new opportunities in the usage area of LGSF system have been suggested. A Temporary Post-Disaster Housing Unit. has been studied as a case study. The case study is the heart of this study whereas the LGSF system has been examined by its lightweight, accurate, easy & fast montage, storable behavior characteristics as well as the structural properties. .Temporary housing. is still a demanded study for Turkey. To design a unit example with the new used LGSF system has been a study that helps both to show the benefits of LGSF in a temporary-housing and the new construction opportunity which fulfills the requirements of a temporary post-disaster housing unit. in Turkey conditions with the Turkish building market materials. While these issues have been worked out, the architectural approach has leaded this study. Design processes of the various examples have been inspected and the new project has been studied in a way to search .how architecture can use this system.
