(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2013) Karadaş, Murat; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
An air cooled binary cycle GPP is thermodynamically modeled by using the design data of an actual plant. Effects of design parameters are investigated to plant performance. The modeling binary cycle power plant is produced 6514 kWe by using 542.65 ton/hour brine, 22.45 ton/hour steam and 33.4% NCGs content of steam at 157.9 °C geothermal resource temperature and 17.1 °C average ambient air conditions. The thermal efficiency of the model plant is found 11.32 %. The performance equations and the theoretical net power correction factors of the plant are created by using the thermodynamic model. According to this model, the net power generation of the plant increases with an increase in brine temperature, and mass flow rates of brine and steam; decreases with an increase of ambient air temperature and NCGs content of the steam. Furthermore, regression analysis of DORA-1 GPP is conducted using actual plant data to assess the plant performance. The annual multiple linear regression models are developed from 2006 to 2012 to estimate the performance of a geothermal power plant by using three measured dependent variables: the ambient air temperature, the brine flow rate and temperature. These models are tested by using classical assumptions of linear regressions, positive serial autocorrelation is found in all models. Autocorrelations are eliminated by using Orcutt-Cochran method. Although the performance model trends from 2006 to 2008 are found to be close, the performance status of the plant is generally variable from year to year. According to perennial regression models, the plant performance has started to decline with 270 kWe electricity generation capacity since 2009. The total degradation of the plant performance reached to 760 kWe capacity by 2012. Additionally, the statistical net power correction factors are calculated using regression model of 2008. Consequently, the net power correction factors for thermodynamic model and regression analysis are compared with DORA-1’s manufacturer, Ormat, correction factors. Although there are some minor differences, all of the net power correction factors have similar trends. The comparison shows that Ormat’s correction factors don’t exactly express the performance status of the DORA-1 GPP.

Modeling Retail Structural Change of Izmir Using a Dynamic Spatial Interaction Model
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Kompil, Mert; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Retailing, one of the most important sectors in all developed economies, has always been the prominent element of urban morphology, and evolves as the city evolves and expands. The last two decades have witnessed considerable changes in retailing throughout developed countries such as, the emergence of new store formats, the increased prevalence of retail chains, the development of out-of-town and edge-of-town retail parks accompanying with the changing conditions of globalized world. Since the sector has undergone major changes in scale, organization, and geography, the urban spaces have been the scene of these ongoing changes.Under the influence of global economic transformation after 80's, there have also been dramatic changes in retail industry and retail environment in Turkey. Despite the sector in Turkey is still dominated by large number of small, independent, and single location retailers, market share and spatial prevalence of large-scale retailers' have been increasing rapidly. Especially in major cities of the country, both international and domestic retail chains have been imposing a transformation and restructuring the urban retail environment. Among all the areas of retailing, food retailing stands out as having seen the most profound changes in Turkey. With respect of this, the study explores the spatial consequences of the structural change of food retailing system in Izmir. The prevalence of large-scale food retailers such as hypermarkets and supermarkets has negative effects on the survival of many small-independent retailers. The increasing competition has led to a changing retail structure with the dominance of organized retailers where the number of small-scale retailers and their total size are decreasing. As the trends continue, this will have important and unpredictable spatial influences on urban retail environment and urban geography. Obviously, there is a strong need for a study exploring changes in retail structure and its influences in urban spaces so that policy makers and planners could take into consideration and help restructuring of this transformation process better. For this purpose, the study explores if the ongoing restructuring process of retailing and its possible geographical consequences can be modeled using a dynamic spatial interaction model as a device to be able to predict the future transformations.

Modeling the Impacts of Izmir Subway on the Values of Residential Property Using Hedonic Price Model
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Yankaya, Uğur; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The thesis analyses the effects of subway investment on the value of residential properties in the case of İzmir subway. It has been known that there is a strong relationship between investments in transport infrastructure and real estate values. There have been many empirical studies associated with the objective of the thesis in urban planning practice, in the world. The empirical studies provide information about economic returns, benefits and costs of proposed investments for policy makers and practitioners. However, there has been little empirical research in Turkey. Therefore, the study attempts to investigate a relationship between property values and changes in accessibility caused by transportation infrastructure investment. In order to achieve the objective of the thesis, an extensive research methodology has been developed. First, many empirical studies are reviewed. The literature survey provided information about the models, variables and functional forms. Hedonic price model is one of the most favored techniques for analyzing urban rent determination in general and the impacts of transport investment on property values in particular.Within the context of the thesis, hedonic price model has been applied to analyze the effects of subway investment on property values in İzmir. In the modeling process, Eviews and SPSS econometric . statistical softwares were used. In addition, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in hedonic modeling of property values was used for measuring spatial-related variables and for creating buffer zones. For this reason, MapInfo software was used. In the models, four different functional forms were used for the case study. The results of the models were analyzed under the assumptions of the regression models. In conclusion, the models give a high level of explanatory power on price variations. The results indicate that proximity to the subway stations is a statistically significant determinant of the market price of house units. It means that direct savings from transportation improvements have been capitalized into property values due to improved accessibility. In addition, it is observed that the influence of transport investment on property values depends on transport costs, total vehicle time and distance to the nearest station. The effects associated with accessibility have been measured using distance and travel times as proxies. The effects are high in the impact zone of the subway stations, but it is small for greater distance from the buffer zones of the subway stations. Log linear and linear log forms are statistically superior to other functional forms.

The Usage of Stochastic and Multicriteria Decision-Aid Methods Evaluating Geothermal Energy Exploitation Projects
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2005) Dur, Fatih; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This study is based on three main questions about the utilization of geothermal energy. The first question is how much heat energy the geothermal resource contains? The second one is what the utilization alternatives are for this resource? And the last question is according to which criteria the scenarios formed by integration of the selected utilization alternatives in specified proportions could be assessed, and what the alternative schema obtained could be like? The method of forming a model by simulations, which is developed as an approach to the solutions of the problems that contain uncertain parameters, like what the heating capacities of the reservoirs are, is used in this study. A model is formed with parameters of the heating capacity of Balçova Geothermal Field by employing Monte Carlo Simulation Technique. Here the aim is to find the amount of the heating energy that could be exploited by sustainable way from the resource. Efforts are given to form the amount of this energy by the help of cumulative probability distribution of the model. It is emphasized what the estimated heating reserve and the alternatives that could be locally utilized. Here, parameters such as the enthalpy of the geothermal resource, content of the fluid, volume of the geothermal field, pattern of the settlement in the field, ability of the soil, topography and structure of the labor etc. should be considered in the light of reconnaissance and exploration studies done in the geothermal field. From the assessment done for Balçova, it is concluded that geothermal resource could be utilized for heating of the dwellings, greenhouse agriculture, thermal tourism and dehydration of fruit and vegetable. Having determined the utilization schema of the geothermal resource, the issue of the assessment of the scenarios, which will be formed from these alternatives, comes up. Here begins the decision making process with a political aspect. By determining the criteria that will be considered while selecting the scenarios, and by determining the relative weights of this criteria, an order which shows the desired situation between the scenarios could be obtained. In this study, the scenarios formed in Balçova are assessed by the help of PROMETHEE method .one of the Multicriteria Decision aid Technique. As a result, it is seen that in Balçova tourism related scenarios stand out because of their superiority in employment created and Tons of Petroleum Equivalent energy values.

Developing Link Capacity Functions at Urban Arterials
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2009) Koşun, Çağlar; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; Çelik, Hüseyin Murat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Link capacity functions are the relationships among the main variables of the vehicular traffic flow at any links. Moreover, developing link capacity function is a task that is related to traffic engineering, yet it is too difficult to find a unique link capacity function belonging to all links in cities. Therefore, this thesis does aim to develop link capacity functions peculiar to the selected divided and undivided links in downtown city İzmir. The main process of developing the link capacity functions depends upon the fastidious site selection, data collection and data analyses techniques. Especially, the main vehicular traffic variables such as flow rate, capacity, speed, travel time data describe the links capacity function. After the data collection process, the data manipulation and their analyses lead to build mathematical model about the link capacity functions. When considering the steps of this thesis, first of all, this thesis reviews the literature and formulates the problem statement and the research objective. Secondly, it conducts the task that consists of the site selection and data collection. In the following parts, this thesis study manipulates and analyzes the obtained data. Then, it performs the linear and non-linear model building by utilizing different functions called V/C ratio & dummy variable, BPR (Bureau of Public Roads) function and Overgaard function for the selected link groups in İzmir. Ultimately, this thesis study compares the model results and manifests the best link capacity function model.
