This effect has resulted in a structural transformation of the rural settlements in metropolitan fringe area. With this effect, the larger city grew and affected the settlements in their fringe area and with this interaction, the social, economic and physical transformations began to take placein the fringe. One of the most important phenomena, which has been affected from these interaction and transformations is the land-ownership affair. The land-ownership has an important role especially in the physical planning process. Besides affecting the physical planning process, this phenomenon is also affected by physical planning process. The alffi of the thesis is to search for the effects of land-ownership transformation in metropolitan fringe areas on existing and potential urban pattern, and to find out if there are some negative result of this mentionet interaction. In this way, new proposals can be brought up to solve the existing and potential problems related with urban land and land-ownership phenomena, and the quality of living environment can be increased. For this study, first, literature survey related to urban sprawl and urban fringe has been accomplished and land policies in Turkey have been considered. After these researches, all of the title deed data related to case study area which is Ayrancllar Municipality (plot numbers, plot sizes, plot owners, and changing of owners) have been searched between 1968-1998 in a three decades period and been transferred into maps.At the same time, a land-use survey has prepared for the area and the construction permits and physical plans have been taken from the municipality to account for three decades period. Thus, as a result of this study, it can be said that there exist a strong relationship among land-ownership transformation process, physical plan decisions, and existing and potential urban patterns and some urban problems can be solved by adopting more meaningful policies during this changing process.Master Thesis Aquaparks-Location Requirements and Design Criteria(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Nacak, Hanife; Özdemir, SemahatLeisure activities and their spatial requirements have represented steady change throughout the history. Particularly with the industrial revolution, the differentation of the work and life conditions influenced the entertainment approach. As a result of this interaction, new activities and land use types occured. Today the amusement parks, theme parks and aquaparks are getting widespread among the entertainment areas. It is seen that, first theory and practice of these kind of activities were realized in America in the beginning of 1900s.The thesis deals with the aquaparks formed by the changes in the evaluation of leisure occupation. In this study developing process, organizations, samples and design criteria of aquaparks that grove in our country were examined. Researches has shown that the existence of establishments dealing with feasibility studies with every phase upto openning and that the security conditions are steadily controlled in aquaparks, especially in America also the number of aquaparks increasing in our country.Furthermore as the construction processes are analyzed; it can be seen that there exist the lack of consideration of demands of the society, physical conditions of construction area, aquapark standards and convience with the security conditions and the lack of control mechanisms. In this framework, the aim of the thesis is that haven't been examined until today, to find out the location requirements, design criteria and land allocation requirements of aquaparks. Throughout the thesis study the followed methodology is making of literature and internet researches and interviews with the municipality officials and aquapark entrepreneurs of the aquaparks and it includes the physical plans and location analysis of aquaparks that were that were realized in Turkey.Master Thesis The Desing of Information Elements in Urban Areas; a Case Study at İzmir, Kemeraltı(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Geçer, Feral; Özdemir, SemahatToday, one of the biggest problems of our cities is the visual pollution and confusion, which is caused by signage because of the absence of a regulation or a special authorized institution. To prevent this visual pollution, the commercial signage must be examined carefully. High-rise satellite towns, shopping centers, office parks, international hotels,large-scale infrastructure projects are the indicators of this change in the fringe of metropolitan city scene. In this period, new housing areas also began to form around the fringe of cities. One of these new residential forms are 'single family housing estate' that indicates to the new forms of urban growth and diffusion processes in metropolitan cities such as Istanbul and Ankara. These housing areas got distant from cities in orderto be nearer to the amenity and represented a tendency to choose location closer to major transportation routes; mostly they are 'gated' and 'packaged' environments. This study is important in examining the Izmir sample of this housing development type where only Istanbul and Ankara samples were discussed before. The aim of the study is to understand the transformation seen in Izmir metropolitan fringe, by studying the development aspects of single family housing estates increasing in number after 1990. The spatial development features and planning decisions orienting the development of single family housing estates that develop at the western axis of the Izmir metropolitan city, within the boundaries of Urla Municipality are studied under the topic 'process'. The reasons and managing factors affecting people leaving the previous housing areas and selecting new areas are discussed in 'behavior' part. Besides, their satisfaction level about houses, housing environments, and accessibility to urban services are questioned.Discussing the constraints created by single family housing estates in metropolitan fringe and potentials brought by them are making easier to perceive this new trend. As a result of the study, constraints of single family housing estates were determined as lack of public space and urban services, automobile dependency, unnecessary consumption and fragmentation of agricultural land and open space, and speculative building. It was also found that there are variety of problems in local government applications and planning regulations.Master Thesis A New Method in the Process of Creating Urban Form: Urban Coding(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Goncagül, Ertunç; Özdemir, SemahatThis study aims: to introduce the theoretical and pragmatic features of the New Urbanism. and the .Urban Coding Method.. vhich is known as the last pL1Ilning approach in an historical framework: to show that most of this approach' s design approach in an historical framework: to show that most of this approach design principles and the life style that it determines have something in common and convenient with the traditional Turkish values that we are about to lost: to prove that concerning local features, it would be adapted and take the place of conventional planning approach. In order to demonstrate it a physical comparative design sutdy was accomplished in a case study area, Karşıyaka Şemikler District. which is one of the most important and also problematic site within the Izmir Metropolitan Area. This study indicated that, New Urbanist principles can generate more desirable consequences as compared to conventional principles in the process of creating urban form provided that people approve to change their short sight and approve to be recepti ve.Master Thesis In the Changing Social Structure Problems of Women and Children Who Are in Need of Protection Related With Urban Physicial Structure and Proposal for Solution of This Problem(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Girgin, Işın; Özdemir, SemahatThe main aim of this thesis is to find solutions to the problems of children who are in need of protection, especially to the problems involving their physical and social environment. In order these children to be integrated into the urban environment, their problems are needed to be solved by new planning regulations, new planning policies and the children's village being a new type of urban land use should be proposed in our city plans. In this context, also the location criteria, area requirements and design guidelines are developed and a prototype plan of a children's village; which is an alternative living environment, is proposed.Master Thesis Analysis of Illegal Physical Development in Metropolitan Cities: an Izmir Case(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Çınar, Ali Kemal; Özdemir, SemahatThe main aim of this study is to analyze the production processes of illegal housing, industrial, commercial and other types of buildings and also to examine the municipalities. acts and attitudes against the illegal-uncontrolled development. In this connection, quantitative and physical database about illegal development in İzmir Metropolitan City was searched by using statistical data and Geographical Information Systems as a tool and to generate information about local and physical features of İzmir. It is important that just "outdoor open space" is the main concern of the research. For this reason at first, starting point of the research, "Universal Design" explained with its guidelines and principles in detail, then, importance of disabled people's participation in social and economic life and reasons of increase in their population is emphasised. After, general terminology, definitions, and dimensions of outdoor space components and disabled people's are given. Outdoor space components are defined and then, their design and maintenance guidelines, standards are given. At the end, Izmir City Centre is selected as a project area and absence and faults of existing outdoor built environment in respect to disabled people requirements defined . In project, selected outdoor space components that are not correspond standards are redesigned in accordance with design guidelines and standards.
