The Transformation of the Public Sphere Under Capitalism: Ankapark
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Çakmak, Gülsüm Gizem; İnceköse, Ülkü
Araştırma verileri, Ankapark'a ilişkin yasal belgeler, planlama raporları ve medya içeriklerinin tematik analiziyle elde edilmiştir. Bu tez, Ankapark üzerinden kapitalist hegemonyanın mekânsal organizasyon stratejilerini ve bu süreçlerin kamusal alanların demokratik, sosyal ve kültürel işlevleri üzerindeki etkilerini ortaya koyarak literatüre katkı sunmayı hedeflemektedir.

Interdisciplinary Aspect of Sociological Knowledge in the Field of Architecture: the Conflict Analysis of İzmir Kültürpark
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Ergüler, Ceren; İnceköse, Ülkü
Formation of Architectural History as a Discipline in Modern Architectural Education in Turkey
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Yıldırım Özcan, Helin; İnceköse, Ülkü; Yıldırım Özcan, Helin; İnceköse, Ülkü
Architectural history courses, which examine the architectural works, buildings, and social structure of societies from various civilizations, regions, and ages with multiple viewpoints, are an important part of architectural education. In Turkey, within the scope of the education programs, architectural history courses take place in doctorate, master, and undergraduate programs, and in terms of undergraduate education, they are one of the critical elements of the compulsory courses. Undergraduate architectural education and architectural history courses are taught in 101 of Turkey's 204 universities, but when these courses are examined from a varied perspective, they show differences in the distribution to the semesters, duration, scope and subject content, naming, course sources, or local and national crediting. While this situation causes an architecture student studying architecture in Turkey to graduate with knowledge of architectural history at different scales, it also contradicts the National Qualifications Framework Charter in Turkey. Also, the consequences of this situation appear in many areas with negative examples both in education life and the built environment. In this context, within the scope of this study, architectural history courses in undergraduate architectural education in Turkey are examined through data from the ECTS information package with the purpose of revealing the portfolio of architectural history education. The main objective of this study is to examine the effects of the causes and consequences of these differences on architectural undergraduate education by analyzing the different approaches seen in the scope of Architecture History courses in undergraduate architecture education in Turkey using numerical data.

Assessment of Wood Laminated Material for Housing Production
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Balkan, Selçuk; İnceköse, Ülkü
Today, laminated wood material is used in different types of structures. In many countries such as our country, as well as countries where this usage is intense, laminated wood material is not preferred in housing production yet. Although it seems that reinforced concrete structures have replaced wooden structures today, environmentally sensitive approaches expressed with concepts such as sustainability, ecological balance and repeatability have enabled the reuse of wood material. In this study, the properties of laminated wood technology, which is predicted to be an alternative technology to conventional construction technologies, are evaluated. With this assessment, laminated wood technology could be an alternative structure production technology in our country. At the beginning of the study, wood materials, wood damaging factors, composite wood materials, the use of wood in residential production and the use of laminated wood in residential production were examined under four main headings. The properties of wood materials and laminated wood materials were examined in detail and the methods, advantages and disadvantages of these materials were determined. This study is detailed on the structure of JZ House which was designed and built by architect Serhat AKBAY in Antalya with laminated wood technology. The laminated wooden parts produced for the building were examined based on scientific data on the design process, static resistance of the building, fire resistance, sustainability, environmental and human health contributions. With the evaluation, it is aimed to increase the preference of wooden structures constructed with developing wood technology.

Computational Thinking and Architectural Education: an Evaluation of Vew Formations in Turkey
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2016) İçmeli Atalay, Bilge Müge; İnceköse, Ülkü
A significantly positive change has been noticed in the conceptual frame of the digital design and its influence on the related studies since the mid 60’s. The influence is quite noticeable in various research areas based on design theory such as architecture, biology and mathematics, etc…The same influence is also detectable on some theoretical cognitive and computational approaches. Instead of being seen mere means of visual presentation, digital tools are redefined as actual design areas in which the design process is formed. As a result, a variety of concepts known as computational design, computer aided design and digital architecture have come into existence. As expected, this change brings about a kind of paradigm in architectural education. On the other hand, it influences the design knowledge and causes changes in the educational models used for the teaching of design. As a consequence, architectural education bears the responsibility of reflecting the potential of both conventional and digital design methods in the designing process. Accordingly, instead of being only used for creating visual effects as in their early days, in this process of forming an architectural concept, digital tools begin to be used as complementary elements in the basic design learning process. In short, when the architectural education system undergoes a change in order to support the digital methods, the digital platform is not perceived only as a means of visual presentation. It accommodates the entire process of conceptualizing, creating and presenting. Accordingly, this dissertation attempts to question the evolution in the formation of design theories together with its impact and reflections in the education, and this thesis also aims to reveal some evolving educational models in the field. It also underlines the possible future of this particular educational model, and how the potentials of these models will be realized and perceived in their attempts to live up to future expectations.

The Concept of Equilibrium and Its Effects of Change From Static To Dynamic on Architectural End-Products
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) İnceköse, Ülkü; Eyüce, Özen
All of the objectslbuildings on the earth can stand due to their structural orders.Standing of a structural order without suffering any damage (broken down, collapsing ... ) is the result of their state of equilibrium. The most important factor effecting the state of equilibrium of any structural order is the force of gravity.Differantiation in the structural orders formed under this stable effect can be explained by the change in the concept of equilibrium. Therefore, analysing the change in architectural and engineering end-products could only be done by understanding the change in the concept of equilibrium.Scientific developments are the basic factors causing the changes in the concept of equilibrium. Reflections of these developments on concrete products is both in the types of load transfer of structural order and in visual expression of order.Consequently, in the scope of the thesis, depending on developments in the science reflections of the change in the concept of equilibrium on concrete products is tried to be explained by structural and geometrical analses. Expression of these analyses are made through the relationship between equilibrium and movement. It is concluded that the change in the structural orders basing on an acceptance of basic physics that "an object is either stable or movable "; is from structures having no motion to structures having any kind of motion (having tendency to move and/or moving). In other words, it can be said that, this change is from immobile structures having whole connection with the ground, to structures trying to remove from the ground. At the end, in today, it is possible to discuss about solutions having different equilibrium orders that is seen/will be seen basing on scientific developments.Generally it is possible to classify these solutions as solutions that can be expressed by different geometrical orders or solutions towards to be independent from the force of gravity.in the light of these determinations the aim of the thesis is to determine changes in the concept of equilibrium and to analyse their effects on structural end-products and to give some clues about their future effects. Keywords: Structural equilibrium, structural balance, gravity, geometry, energy, structural order.

The Assessment of a New Relationship Between From and Structure in Digital Architectural Design Affter 1990's
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2013) Demir, Yelin; İnceköse, Ülkü
From the beginning of 1960’s, architects are using computers in architectural design processes. Initially, architects used them as design tools for representation and modelling purposes. However from the beginning of 1990’s, architects started to use computers as design mediums where the whole design process evolves starting from design ideation to construction. Digital technologies enabled architects to design wide range of forms in digital design environments and therefore, form-based design processes appeared. Architects mostly focused on form generation concerns. However, this form based approach brought forth problems in relation to constructability. Complex irregular forms challenged engineers to find optimal structural solutions. Architects and engineers started to work on a unified architectural and structural design process and offered new structural system solutions with the help of digital technologies for overcoming the constructability problem. This process and solutions presented different form-structure relationships. The main aim of this thesis is to reveal the form-structure relationships in digital design processes focusing on constructability of digitally designed forms. Constructability is related to structural system design. Therefore, this thesis examines design, manufacturing and construction processes of structural systems to understand how architectural designs/forms are realized and constructed. It examines the whole process of design to construction of structural systems including models, tools, structural system solutions, and fabrication and construction methods. The examination is done over case studies which are digitally designed and constructed building examples. Each case study exemplifies a different model, tool, structural system and design process which also defines a different type of form-structure relationship. Key words: digital architectural design, structural design, form, structure, construction
