Master Thesis Determination of Suppressed & Diverted Travel Demands: İzmir Case Study(01. Master Thesis Factors Affecting the Travel Preferences and Behaviors Under the Pandemic Conditions: İzmir City Case(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023) Yüksel, Muzaffer Arda; Duvarcı, YavuzPeople prefer or have to choose different travel modes for various reasons while travelling. The Covid-19 Pandemic has led to the change and restructuring of social life by threatening people's health. It has created important changes on travel preferences and behaviors. The importance of travel preference in transportation has increased during the pandemic period. This study aims to contribute to the literature by comparing the change in travel patterns before and during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Lately, the current reasons for preference have been largely affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic. This study reveals how the travel preferences and external factors of travel have changed. In the study, home-based work, and home-based social travels were examined. The case study of the study includes central districts of İzmir. Research data obtained by 385 person-based surveys. Since the basic methodological approach is the before/during study, the study is examined in two periods, before and during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Chi Square and McNemar-Bowker Test methods were used in the study. The study discusses the significance of the Covid-19 Pandemic effect on travel preferences and external factors on travel preferences. As a result of the study, Covid-19 Pandemic effect on travel preferences and travel external factors was found to be significant. Social travels mode preferences were the most affected by external factors. Private car ownership was the strongest external factor in travel preference before the pandemic, and education level was the strongest external factor during the pandemic period. With the pandemic effect, the total strength of age, student/employee factors decreased, and the total strength of gender and education level factors increased. There was no change in the strength of the private car factor.Master Thesis The Effects of Various Intelligent Transportation Systems Applications on the Transportation Disadvantaged Groups(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023) Özsoy, Damla; Duvarcı, YavuzMany applications developed within the framework of Smart Transportation are developed to facilitate urban journeys and reduce costs. However, Intelligent Transportation Systems applications have not always been the applications that can be easily used by disadvantaged groups. With this study, it is aimed to develop technological suggestions to the discriminatory effects of ITS applications on the disadvantaged in general, transportation disadvantaged, and non-disadvantaged individuals, address to their special needs and the problems faced by individuals. Descriptive statistics, category analysis and One-way Anova Test were used as methods. According to the results, more than half of the disadvantaged individuals are unfamiliar with the concept of Intelligent Transportation Systems. The applications they use while traveling or in public transportation are the applications that they physically see, know, and use in their daily lifestyles in the city, or their use has become mandatory. Transportation disadvantaged groups generally know about ITS applications and use them actively during the day. It is understood from the problems observed in the city of Izmir that the development of spatial applications rather than mobile and web applications for the disadvantaged groups, the elimination of the malfunctions of Smart stops and Smart pedestrian buttons and the installation of new ones at smart stops, addressing the traffic congestion by making alternative transportation solutions, etc. In addition, smart stops, passenger information boards, smart passenger button, Green man, new map applications, Barrier-Free Smart Transportation, WeWalk, Horus, New public transportation vehicles should be implemented for the city of İzmir.Master Thesis The Effects of Navigation Systems on Traffic Congestion Using Real-Time Data: Case of İzmir(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Yang, Chaewon; Duvarcı, YavuzThis study tries to define the effects of navigation systems in urban traffic through city area in İzmir, using Google maps. Navigation systems, especially with real-time traffic data is relatively new, and user's rate has been sharply increased along with a spread of smartphone. However, there is no deep understanding of the navigation systems, yet. Therefore, people who utilize navigation systems while driving might trigger unexpected merits and demerits. The study is conducted on two different scales; (1) commuting trips in the overall city (16 km in a straight line) and (2) short trip in the central business district (2 km in a straight line). Within the study area, the hypothetical trips are generated and the data of travel time and a travel distance of each trip suggested by Google maps is gathered. Compared the data, it is defined that how much time could be saved and how long additional travel distances are caused by Google Maps. Besides, the possible problem in the local streets is investigated. In a narrow local street, the environment should be pedestrian-friendly and suitable for low-speed vehicles, however, navigation systems would lead drivers into the local street. We discover how long are local streets used by the recommendation of the navigation system. The result shows that during peak hours, the travel time travel distance is longer compared to the off-peak hours. Also, it indicates that by using Google Maps, drivers could save travel time while they drive the longer travel distance during peak hours.Master Thesis Transfer of Development Rights for the Effectiveness of the Conservation Plans: a Case From Historic Kemeraltı 1st Ring Residential Areas in Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Güzle, Gamze; Akpınar, Figen; Duvarcı, YavuzThe efforts for conservation of cultural heritage in historical settlements are highly problematic issue in Turkey. One of the main reasons for this is highly associated with the limited fiscal compensation provided by the central ministries and local bodies for those people who live and/or possess immobile property under restrictions of their development rights. For this reason, it is indispensable to introduce new tools for the effectiveness of the conservation activities of the heritage areas. On the other hand, with the enactment of the regulations Transfer of Development Rights (Law no: 5226/2004) is entered Turkish Planning System as a new and innovative solutions. However, there has been any available application of the TDR and implementing regulation yet. The main objective of the thesis is to discuss the applicability of the TDR as an instrument for the ease of the conservation procedure in the 1st Ring Residential Area which is located in Izmir’s Historic core areas, Kemeraltı region. In methodology, a bundle of techniques such as survey analysis and depth questionnaires are used. We made a comparative study based on a typical "what-if case" that if the case study area were not really under the status of conservation then how it would be developed in accord with the Development Plan’s right. Assumption that "If the Agora-Kemeraltı region were not really under the conservation status, it would be similar to the Alsancak-Çankaya region which is 500 meters away." the comparison of the housing market value between the two areas realized the restricted development right by the conservation plan. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism grants only accounts for 48% of the total maintenance and restoration cost. Due to financial deficiencies, it is not feasible to preserve the region with current planning tools. Even though, the preservation of Historic Kemeraltı seems to be a difficult challenge, there seems to be some positive clues for the future with the application of the TDR.Master Thesis The Analysis of the Planning Consequences and Risk of Earthquake in Terms of Urban Rent: the Case Study of Adapazarı(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Bektaş, Birkan; Duvarcı, YavuzGeneral aims of the thesis were to understand the nature and causes of earthquake damage in built and social environment, to define and assess urban seismic risk in Turkey and the World, to interrogate planning regulations, policies, and implementations, and to determine the risk factors from social, economic, natural viewpoints. However, the thesis assumed that the increase of the risk as correlated to the raised rent values could be related to planning decisions. The thesis aimed to look closely to planning decisions and their causality on the increase of earthquake risk in terms of urban rent. The study assumes that there are strong relationships among earthquake damage, urban rent and planning decisions. Various risk factors related to earthquake damage were described as natural, social, economic and technical factors. But the scope of the thesis was limited to social risk factors with respect to earthquake damage in order to clarify impact of urban rent and planning decisions.Multiple Regression and correlation analysis was used as a method in order to provide an experimental fundamental and to test claims. In this study, unit of data analysis is defined as scale of district or "mahalle" in Adapazari. Firstly, data such as population density, earthquake damage, the physical building density, and land price (urban rent) in Adapazari was assigned to unit of "mahalle". After analysis in scale of "mahalle" was completed in 26 districts, correlation and regression analysis through variables are conducted in order to enlighten relationships among earthquake damage and urban rent and plan decisions. The study examined that what planning decisions urban rent influence and what their explanatory degree was through regression and correlation analysis. For this step land price or urban rent was analyzed with population density, distance to the city center and ground area ratio through regression and correlation. In the second step earthquake damage was analyzed with independent variables, land value or urban rent, average distance of demolished buildings to the city center and physical building density. Variables coming planning decisions and urban rent and earthquake damage in second step are analyzed through correlation and regression. In the first step, when outcomes of analysis between urban rent (land price) and other variables were assessed, the calculated R square is approximately 52 % and relationships between dependent and independent variables were not strong. In the second step, when analysis between earthquake damage ratio and other variables were assessed, R square is approximately 63% and relationships between dependent and independent variables were not very strong. In conclusion, my assumption related to urban rent and earthquake damage was falsified by correlation and regression analysis. However, it does not mean that there is not any relationship between earthquake damage and land price (urban rent ). The goal of this study was to understand impact of mentioned factors on earthquake damage. The study suggests that future researches related earthquake damage should be focus on natural risk factors and building technology of construction.Key words: natural disaster, urban rent, earthquake damage, planning decisions, conventional planning, risk management and contingency planning, regression and correlation analysis.
