Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Master Thesis User Experience Based Participatory Urban Design Practices: Case of İzmir(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023) Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIncreasing urbanization is reducing human interaction with the natural environment, creating negative consequences for both humans and nature. Since the majority of the human population lives in cities today, the nature experience mostly includes the urban nature experience. In this context, urban green spaces are among the main areas that allow people to interact with nature in their daily lives. Therefore, it is important to adopt design approaches that encourage people's nature experiences in the design of these areas. Biophilic design, which focuses on enhancing people's interactions with nature in the built environment, offers an opportunity in this context. This study focuses on understanding the user's experience of nature through biophilic design in the context of three neighborhood parks located in the Bostanlı neighborhood of Karşıyaka district of İzmir province. In this study, nature experience is considered at two levels: the environmental level and the individual level. The spatial characteristics and nature experience potentials of three selected neighborhood parks were examined at the environmental level. To explore the individual level of nature experience, a nature experience workshop was conducted with seven participants residing in the Bostanlı neighborhood. For both levels, the experience-based framework of biophilic design was used as a theoretical framework. As a result of the analyses, it has been understood that the user's experience of nature in the use of urban green spaces in densely urbanized areas is affected by spatial characteristics as well as individual factors. Furthermore, the study findings indicate that the experience-based framework of biophilic design provides a useful framework for comprehending how users interact with nature in urban green spaces.Master Thesis Evaluating the Impacts of Geothermal Energy Plants on Quality of Life: Case of Alasehir (manisa)(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021) Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyQuality of life has been handled with different approaches by many disciplines from past to present, and it has started to be used frequently in the international agenda in order to meet the needs of the increasing world population and to find solutions to problems such as climate change. Due to the multidimensional and complex nature of the concept, there is no consensus on the definition and measurement method. Quality of life definitions, and indicators varies in the context of scale, approach, and method. The study concentrates on the perceived quality of life of people close proximity to geothermal power plants in the case of Alaşehir. First, the indicators used in neighbourhood, rural and environmental quality of life studies were examined and grouped under the parameters of built environment, accessibility, vulnerability, degradation, health, contamination, and resilience. Then, the historical background, usage, geothermal systems, environmental impacts and social acceptance of geothermal energy and geothermal energy studies in Turkey were evaluated. As a result of this evaluation, the participation parameter was added to the research. In line with socio-spatial analysis, the areas under the influence of geothermal power plants were determined and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the parameters. As a result of the analyses and interviews, it has been determined that the impact of geothermal energy on the quality of life in Alaşehir district is perceived through agricultural production. Contamination, vulnerability, and participation parameters come to the fore, and show that geothermal power plants negatively affect the perceived quality of life.Master Thesis Organisation of Design Cooperatives as a Part of Co-Production Movements(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021) Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyClimate change is a reality, and its impact is being experienced all over the globe. The effects range from heat waves, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, flooding, drought, and reduction of bio-diversity among others. Urban areas are at greater risk since they accommodate the majority of the global human population exceeding 55% and are expected to be 68% by 2050. The most affected urban areas are the tropical coastal cities since most of them fall within low and middle-income countries with low levels of economic development and technological capabilities hence a low capacity to adapt. This study focuses on exploring Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as an affordable and ecologically sustainable approach to enhance climate change adaptability in tropical coastal cities. A case study of Mombasa is considered, a typical tropical coastal city located in Kenya. Primary data sources including pictures and key informant interviews via snowball sampling were employed to gather ground information. Secondary sources consisted of institutional data review, strategic documents, policies, and scientific journals on NBS and Climate Change adaptation in tropical environments. The study findings depicted the climate change associated challenges in Mombasa include urban flooding, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, increasing temperatures. Rapid urbanization related challenges include inadequate infrastructure and services, poor liquid and solid waste management and inadequate housing. The study proposes NBS measures such as coastal vegetation restoration, implementing green infrastructure in the urban area, and creeks restoration could offer multi-dimensional benefits that can be replicated in other tropical coastal cities to enhance sustainability and climate resilience.
