    Spatial sprawling of the capital especially in the post-2002 process in Turkey increased with transportation, extraction and energy investments, by the regulatory role of state. Especially for energy investments as the one of enterprise of capital that progressed by neoliberal policies, the state intervention which is one of the state’s roles that is capital-oriented in Turkey is re-regulation processes. In the historical background of HEPPs in Turkey; Munzur Valley, it is one of the place where the capital performs itself on the nature. Munzur Valley is the nature (the nature that self-sanctity of the local people with the historical value) that spatial fix of capital by HEPPs, and it is the place where capital will realize itself. In this process which the state has undertaken a regulatory role in the areas where capital performs its activities by controlling the environmental reactions and resolving the capital-local conflict. In such capital investment processes, the state is behalf of capital to create and expand investment areas as a policy and law-maker. In order to guarantee its own continuity, the state has taken on the task of intervening by making legal regulations in case of conflicts between investors and local people, while the capital is in the stage of having a form. The ecological fixes that Noel Castree mentions, was observed in the case of Munzur Valley National Park which the sacredness and historical value of the local people in this study area.

    Location Choice of Food Industry in İzmir

    In this study, the spatial distribution of the food companies registered in the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry in İzmir has been investigated and the causality of the site selection has been reviewed. The empirical studies conducted in the literature so far does not include a detailed study on the choice of location of the food industry, a factor that adds strength to this study. The purpose of the current study is to analyse the determinants of firm location in Izmir’s food industry. It particularly focuses on the impact of experience and size of the firms. In this study, we examined, through statistical methods (such as descriptive statistics, maps, cross sectional linear regressions, spatial autocorrelation analyses), 734 companies. The following variables were empirically analysed, firms’ establishment dates, sub-sectors, number of employees, capital assets, locations, distances from the centre of Izmir, distances from the centre of the sub-province that the establishment belongs to and the distance from each other. As a result of the empirical analyses and spatial data evaluation, companies’ choice of location in the food industry can be summarized as follows; Experience plays a very significant role, which means that experienced companies are located in the centre or close to the centre because they have already been well-established in that place. The choice of location does not have any bearing upon the size of the firm.

    Stormwater Management in Cities as a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy: Case of Halkapınar District (izmir, Turkey)

    Water scarcity, one of the effects of climate change, has started to affect the world. Stormwater acting a main role in how the world mitigates and adapts to the effects of climate change. Cities need strategies to manage the influx of stormwater. One of these strategies is the capture and re-use of stormwater instead of run off. This thesis deals with the studies that can be carried out in urban areas within the framework of stormwater management as a climate change adaptation strategy. In this context, this study treats stormwater as an asset. Thus, preventing stormwater from producing runoff or causing floods, shows what can be done in the city to capture and even re-use again. This thesis focuses on the use of green infrastructure to increase urban resiliency to climate change and natural hazards. In this study, firstly, the theoretical literature about climate change and stormwater management are examined. Then several different projects implemented throughout the world and Turkey are investigated. It has been shown that how these examples can be used as inspiration in Halkapınar District of İzmir. Subsequently, the stormwater infrastructure of İzmir from the antiquity to the present has been researched within the scope of water management. As a result of this study, what can be done for Halkapınar district is proposed. For this purpose, regional analyzes were examined first. As a result of the analyzes, the studies that can be done for stormwater are explained. This study is intended to be a guide for future studies stormwater management in cities.

    Age-friendly' Neighbourhood Parks: Evaluating Parks in Karşıyaka (izmir) According To User Perceptions

    Neighbourhood parks are expected to be accessible public open spaces located in a walking distance to the residences of individuals and provide them opportunities for leisure activities, physical activities and socializing. Use of neighbourhood parks is beneficial for all, but especially for older adults, as most of their daily routines are bound to neighbourhood environment. It is observed that older adults using neighbourhood parks often tend to have better physiological, mental and social health. On the other hand, not all older adults use neighbourhood parks, commonly because physical and social characteristics of these parks are not responsive to their age-related spatial needs and expectations. An ‘age-friendly’ park is supposed to be accessible, attractive, comfortable and safe for all, and particularly older adults. Certain factors about parks and park surroundings, for instance, walkability of the streets, opportunities for social interactions or existence of restrooms affect the perceptions of older adults about the age-friendliness of parks. The aim of this study is to identify the socio-spatial characteristics of parks that contribute to their age-friendliness, based on studies about spatial experiences of older adults in public open spaces. Then as a case study based on interviews with 65 years old and older park users in two relatively age-friendly neighbourhood parks in Karşıyaka (Izmir) that are selected through site observations, this study intends to evaluate how age-friendly the older adults perceive these parks, in relation to access to parks, physical and social characteristics of parks and park surroundings. Finally, the study intends to use its findings to develop recommendations for urban design interventions to improve age-friendliness of neighbourhood parks.

    Critical Review Of City Branding: Case Study Of Hacı Memiş District (alaçatı, Turkey)

    This thesis examines the city branding process with a critical view in the case of Hacı Memiş District in Alaçatı, İzmir. In this context, the study is aimed to criticize city branding approach as an internationally research domain characterized by a multidisciplinary research. Actually, it investigates and analyzes the controversial issues of city branding. The case study of thesis, Alaçatı that has been defined as a recent phenomenon of city branding in Turkey from 2000s, is a historical settlement in İzmir Peninsula. Within the scope of the study, the surveys and in-depth interviews with groups of business owners, locals, visitors and pioneers in Alaçatı provided the study data to reveal the dynamics and direction of the transformation. The study also focuses on the context and background of the settlement, chronological processing of historical developments, social, demographic and economic structure, land uses, plans in different scales, projects and planning decisions, to show implications of city branding on the place and target groups, especially, the locals. The aim of this study is to assess the branding story of Alaçatı in detail for disclosing a spatial, social, economic and quality of life implications on the locals. Research findings indicates that, the branding process of Alaçatı has brought about a radical transformation in Alaçatı. These impacts have caused varied tendencies, particularly, "gentrification" and in parallel with the gentrification in cities, "displacement" tookplace in Alaçatı.

    Measures To Prevent Possible Risks of Cultural Tourism on Loss of Place Identity in Historic Settlements: Case of Saburhane District, Muğla

    The cultural heritage conservation approach evolved from preservation of monumental structures, to preservation of historic fabric and living within existing texture. In case of conservation-oriented practices in historic settlements proposed functions for settlements to continue to live are generally tourism-oriented. When tourism-oriented implementations are examined, it is seen that the life in historic texture has been gentrified. In this context, this thesis discusses the relationship between cultural tourism and loss of place identity through Saburhane district in Muğla city center. A survey was conducted with the inhabitants of the district to understand the identity of the Saburhane and interviews were conducted with the authorized persons to understand the viewpoints of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and Menteşe Municipality on the conservation of historic texture and existing lifestyle in the district. The Saburhane Street Rehabilitation Project has been examined in terms of the method and process followed. The surveys showed that Saburhane has continued to be alive for a long time, the residents of the neighborhood has been observed to be highly attached on the settlement. However, the most important problems identified are the uncared physical texture, the inability of the inhabitants to maintain their buildings due to low income levels and the physical condition of the buildings getting worse to live. Despite the participatory approach being followed in the Saburhane Street Rehabilitation Project, cultural tourism demands of the Municipalities requires preventions within new proposals to be developed in order to minimize the risk of loss of place identity.

    Commodification of Nature and Accumulation by Dispossession in Karaburun Peninsula

    Biophysical areas and resources have been privatized, and subjected to market in response to requirements of the capital accumulation with the view of overcoming the crisis of capitalism in the 1970s. Natural areas previously untouched or used for local production have become “spatial fixes”, to which global capital switched, through state regulations. In other words, there has been an increasing intervention into natural areas, and occurred an intense form of commodification of nature. Privatization, commodification and marketization of these areas lead to environmental degrading. Besides, enclosure of these areas to prevent access of local people to use these natural sources causes them not to able to keep on their livelihood activities. Local people who have been taken away from their common lands or private properties by being deprived of use or ownership are becoming increasingly impoverished and dispossessed. Neoliberal practices after 2000 in the Karaburun Peninsula are striking examples of commodification of nature and accumulation by dispossession. This study examines neoliberal regulations, policies and practices, the overlap between the natural areas and investments, and ownership of these areas in Karaburun Peninsula. As a result, it is seen that the pasture areas used by the villagers to earn their living have been narrowed; their properties have been expropriated and then allocated for wind power generation and industrial olive cultivation. Moreover, the increase of mining investments, fish farms and secondary dwellings on state lands, agricultural lands, pastures and coastal areas have led to privatization of natural areas and restriction of local access.

    Assessing the Walkability Principles: the Case Study of Mehmetçik Boulevard

    Walkability is defined as the action of the human being to go from one place to another. The streets are one of the most important parts of the built environment and their using by pedestrians increases urban consciousness and social ties. The quality of walkability varies according to the location, usage, and character of the public space. Walkability issue has become more important due to urban growth and an increase in vehicle usage in today's' cities. Increasing walkability in a city increases livability. The aim of this thesis is to assess the walkability quality of urban streets considering walkability principles. In this context, the thesis aims to investigate the principles that affect walkability in urban centers and considering walkability principles to examine the built environment characteristics and pedestrians' usage of a street through a case study. The thesis also attempts to offer recommendations for creating more walkable spaces. For these purposes, firstly, the definition and importance of the concept of walkability are examined. Secondly, walkability principles of the streets in urban centers are established. Thirdly, Mehmetçik Boulevard, which is located in one of the sub-centers of İzmir and used intensively during the day, is evaluated according to the walkability principles. In this study, the walkability quality of the boulevard is examined and assessed in the context of diversity, accessibility, safety, street quality, comfort and legibility principles. Finally, as a result of the literature study and the case study, recommendations are provided to increase walkability quality of Mehmetçik Boulevard, and as well as for urban streets of other cities.

    Housing Production in the Last Thirty Years and Housing Question of the Poor in Izmir

    In this thesis, housing production in the last thirty years and housing question of the poor in İzmir is examined. The case study focuses on the squatter housing area in İkinci İnönü Neighborhood that has been suppressed by the luxury housing development and was declared as the urban transformation area under the Redevelopment of Areas Under Disaster Risk Law (no. 6306) by Narlıdere Municipality in 2013. The squatter housing development in İzmir started as the solution by the poor for the housing problem. Particularly in the last ten years, the urban transformation projects that aim to renew and transform the squatter housing areas resulted in exclusion through dispossession of the poor. The research problem is whether the poor can enter into the housing market; how and in what ways they articulate to the system; and what waits for them after the urban renewal project that would be carried out in the area. Accordingly, a field research was conducted. It was a methodologically pluralist work covering field survey, visual documentation, in-depth interviews with squatter housing inhabitants, the mukhtar and municipal authorities, focus group interviews, household questionnaires and interviews, and institutional data collection. The findings of the research indicate that the urban transformation project carried out in the squatter housing area will result in the exclusion and displacement of the poor. The project addresses to higher income groups, is market-oriented, and insensitive to the economic, social and cultural characteristics of the inhabitants of the area. The project will be carried out by the 50% shareholding partnership of Narlıdere Municipality and a private company. Although the urban transformation project has been submitted to the approval of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, there is no agreement that specifies the title deed right of the residents.

    Blue growth in Izmir Peninsula

    The trend towards exploiting natural resources caused by urbanization and increasing population has recently started to attract significant attention. In particular, it is the 'Blue Growth' concept, a subject not previously considered in the field of planning, for which the European Union has started to develop holistic and sustainable policies. In traditional planning studies, the terrestrial and coastal areas are considered as a whole and the marine areas are excluded from the planning. The seas, however, cover a large part of the city and its habitats. In marine areas such as the terrestrial areas; The regions that need to be protected, the species that need to be protected, the regions that are formed according to the diversity of the areas of use, and the regions that need to be used by the sectoral diversity. In this study, people from different institutions and organizations involved with marine areas were interviewed by using qualitative data collection method. The study aims to raise awareness about marine areas, to give information about the European approach in dealing with marine areas and to show that the seas should be considered together with land and coastal planning in Turkey. Therefore, in this study, we investigated how the sea areas are used, which laws and regulations are applied to the seas, which sectors and which stakeholders are involved with the sea. Then, maritime areas were examined on the Izmir peninsula in the framework of marine tourism and aquaculture and fishing. As a result of this study, we hope to increase awareness about the marine areas to be included in the field of planning and we will suggest our ideas about the holistic planning approach. This study will provide guidance on the marine environment and legal regulations for future studies.
